Anyone interested in another Moondog training session?

Evening all.

I went to Moondog's training session in B'ham earlier this year and found it really useful as well as enjoying the opportunity to meet other MNers.

I wondered if anyone would be interested in attending another one - perhaps in the SE this time?

For me personally, I'd love to consolidate some of what was covered at the first session and being totally selfish, would also want to cover some topics that would be relevant to my DD starting school next year.

For those who don't know, Moondog is a regular poster here. She is a v experienced SALT with an MSc in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA).

The session some of us attended in B'ham was really an introduction to ABA with Moondog and her colleague sharing several practical ABA-based techniques that they have used very successfully with children with SN - to help both with communication and learning.

So, if you're interested and think you could help me persuade Moondog to run another course, please post below giving an indication of what would be helpful to you and what region would suit you best (SE, Midlands etc). If there's enough common ground, then we might be able to set something up.

Many thanks

I would def be up for it... can do either bristol or london, (as I am pretty much central between the two Grin) farther east than central london would be problematic for me tho...

kyz1981 · 10/11/2012 19:18

I would be very interested and would prefer SE.

messmonster · 10/11/2012 19:44

At this rate, Moondog will be doing a tour!

Anyone who has expressed an interest but who hasn't yet indicated what they'd like to see covered, please would you post again with just a couple of lines of things you'd like to learn from the day? PM me if you'd prefer to do this off-board.

Looks like we're getting to a number that could make this viable - Yay! Grin

I'd like to learn about the point of ironing knickers personally. Will that be covered?

newbrunette · 10/11/2012 20:25

Count me in too if poss. SE is best for me. We are in Sussex so London good, Bristol harder.

pinkorkid · 10/11/2012 20:51

well obviously the knickers thing...

but also:

ABA for older dcs/teens - are the strategies any different?

Will ABA strategies work for dcs with PDA?

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 10/11/2012 20:57

Definitely ABA for all ages - mine range in age from 21mo to coming up for 15!

London anywhere works for me.

AAmommy · 10/11/2012 23:58

I also would love to join. anyware around london/boroughs/surrey is fine with me.

ProcrastinatingPanda · 11/11/2012 00:15

I'd love to come but I live in Scotland so there's no chance of that. Could you post if she ever has any talks up here?

signandsmile · 11/11/2012 07:43

I am just up for general introduction / information.

blueShark · 11/11/2012 08:59

I would also love to attend again if spaces, would give priority to people attending first time.

I want to get tips on how to further encourage non aba school personnel to use consistent approach, data collection with just ticking boxes, reinforcements so that DS responds to most rather than some.

I hate annual review time when EP comes and DS chooses not to work for her but would do when Ta joins, or wouldn't do much for ot as they both have developed personal dislike for each other Confused

winning hearts and minds as a powerless parent who is trying to get on board defensive educationalists is something we probably all need help with.

There are some 'rules' I have learned.

  • ALWAYS write something in the home school book. Every single day. Include snippets of homelife now and then so they get a better picture of your child. If you are able to do so genuinely and not in a current battle for provision, give examples of school learning being transfered to home.
  • Always thank people for their time even if you can't thank them for the quality of their input.
  • It's slow and frustrating, but try to let the professionals come up with a solution first even if you know it isn't going to work. Once it fails you have a MUCH better chance of having your own ideas taken seriously.
  • If you ask for something, make sure there is something in what you are asking for that requires a committment from you too, and 100% deliver on it. Your request will be taken more seriously and is more likely to be agreed to.
  • Don't ask for homework/therapy/spellings/physio/SALT to do at home UNLESS you are going to do it AND feed back.

Marking my place...

coff33pot · 12/11/2012 01:30

I would like to hear how to help demand avoidance and anxiety as a result of doing something that goes against the grain.

cjn27b · 12/11/2012 17:27

I'd be interested, we're in SE London.

moondog · 12/11/2012 18:12

Evening all.
Messmonster and I have talked offline as obviously not on for me to use MN as a free platform to advertise myself (althoguh I have paid for an ad in the past). I work f/t so this is not the way I earn my living.
However I am happy to arrange sessions for MNers if interest there.
THis is easy enough to manage. The time gobbler is the admin it all involves.

Othe issue is that there are a lot of people who all want different things so I can nver please everyone. In this case, as Mess is the first to make a direct request in a while, I will go with what she is after in a place of her choosing. Then those who want this too can come on board.

If others want something else, let me know.
As long as it is financially viable to me I can do it.
Oh, and wax lyrical about the joys of wearing ironed knickers.
Mess, will message you anon.

Bluebirdonmyshoulder · 12/11/2012 20:55

Will travel anywhere for this. Also happy to give others a lift so long as you promise not to eat in my car and are not a serial killer!

messmonster · 12/11/2012 22:05

Further to Moondog's post above, am feeling the weight of responsibility on choosing topics and location Smile.

Am v busy tonight and tomorrow prepping for a meeting about DD on Weds but will give this some thought and, taking into account as many of the posts on here as poss re location and content, will work with Moondog to come up with a suggested format. Will then post back more details.

StarlightMcKenzie · 12/11/2012 22:16

Why don't you start with the old one and then refine.

I don't know much about Bristol, but I think Conway Hall in central London is reasonably priced. You might get a free room from an organisation/school/charity if we cover the attendance of one of their staff!?

mariammma · 12/11/2012 22:23

Just a thought moondog, but could you combine a trip to teach us with attending something useful for yourself? Get the professional update box ticked with a single train fare Wink
