my youngest dc with dx autisum (13yo) has made a decree regarding toothpaste, its a compleatly new one on me as none of my other dc's eiter dx asd or nt has ever done this and im flumoxed.

toothpaste must not
have stripes
be mint flavered
contain baking soda
have the words baby/jr/children on tube
be orange or pink
have a gel like appearence.

i cannot think what one to try, yesterday i spent nearly £30 on toothpaste but so far they have only been used as assult missiles

Could you make your own?
Baking soda is the cleaning part of it, so I'm not sure if you could get away with it. Perhaps if you used it under its chemical name (Sodium bicarbonate?)
Have you asked the dentist what they recommend. I'm sure they must have had requests before.

dev9aug · 22/08/2012 12:09

Aha, I have just what you need.. This is hat we use for ds1..pure beginings

I have checked and it does not mention the word baking soda and only emotions suitable for children and babes at the back in small letterings.
Hope this works for you. Available from John Lewis.

urtekram do several, I believe. I usually buy from Goodness Direct, but I am allowed mint flavour Wink.

can't link easily due to sleeping baby! but sure they do alternative flavours, and don't have usual ingredients.

Tom's of Maine is a possibility too - but haven't bought them for years, so not sure.

silverfrog · 22/08/2012 12:23

have just checked - urtekram don't have bakng soda in.

they do:
aloe vera
tea tree
eucalyptus

flavours.

aren't coloured or striped, not gel like.

TapselteerieO · 22/08/2012 12:46

I use Kingfisher toothpaste, it is fennel with fluoride, just plain white <a class="break-all" href="//flavouredwww.kingfishertoothpaste.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here.

TapselteerieO · 22/08/2012 12:52

Melon flavoured, but ouch the price!

Socknickingpixie · 22/08/2012 18:16

you have to watch out for the lack of flouride in most of the natural toothpastes. A friend who was suspicious of flouride (amongst other things) used special non-flouride toothpaste and her children ended up having many many fillings. I sympathise though, DS3 needs high flouride toothpaste but won't touch mint.

creamteas · 22/08/2012 20:44

Another non-mint DC here, it is a nightmare isn't it.

ouryve · 22/08/2012 20:58

My eldest doesn't like strong mint, but at least he likes he stripes in aquafresh big teeth. And it's easy(ish) to get hold of!

Lougle · 22/08/2012 21:47

The oranurse has flouride at adult proportions.

Socknickingpixie · 22/08/2012 22:16

mine will compleatly refuse to be assoseated with any stripes of any kind apparently its just wrong and putting them in your mouth so wrong that it requires trying to vomit on any near by person.

sometimes just sometimes i wish i could show stuff like this to people who dont understand autisum and just how much it does impact on so many things

Kingfisher does both with and without fluoride, clearly stated on the box which it is too. Good luck with the toothpaste hunt, my two are fussy about toothpaste but will tolerate mild mint flavour at the moment.

Socknickingpixie · 23/08/2012 18:44

ive just found the oranurse one on amazon with free p&p

probably qualify as bad mother here - but I have discovered that if u keep cheap mint toothpaste for a few years, the mint flavour wears off and it just tastes of grit - ignore if you are squemish about sell by dates, but it works for us. (we found out by accident - then started rolling program of buying and stashing)

wigglybeezer · 24/08/2012 10:37

I think I will check out the ora nurse one too, anything to help DS3 brush his teeth for longer than 10 seconds.

mariammariam · 24/08/2012 11:50

You can get fluoride drops off dentist

Wow I thought my son was fussy! Grin He won't have baby ones or strong minty ones, or fruity ones. He's settled on the Aquafresh big teeth one. Im the opposite and have to have super strong minty taste or I gag so I buy either pearl drops (blue gel one) or Denivit.

Good luck in your search OP, hope you find one that is deemed worthy. Smile

Lolaismyfavouriteandmybest · 25/08/2012 10:05

Chicken- I am in awe of you level of organisation! How many years in advance do you have to anticipate dans for toothpaste? If I had to stock pile something for a couple of months before it was needed I wouldn't have a hope of finding it again. Grin

Lolaismyfavouriteandmybest · 25/08/2012 10:05

Demand not dans..... Bloody phone!
