I'm feeling a bit thick today, I've someone from here involved, we have a ton of people involved but not entirely sure who exactly they are or what they do. Do they go by any other name? Can anyone explain to me in laymans terms who they are please?
Thank you

They're part of social work, what they provide is different in different areas, but they assess for things like respite care, equipment and adaptations in the home and in some areas, holiday clubs, youth clubs, parent support groups and befrienders for the child.

frustratedpants · 04/08/2012 12:39

Ah thank you. That makes sence with what they were talking about.

Very rarely to people tell you what they actually do - I think you're supposed to just magically know, lol

frustratedpants · 04/08/2012 12:53

I think if they don't tell you they can cover their backs when they don't actually do anything. Hmm

So theyre kind of social workers.

Who are cahms then? They're mental health right? Don't they come under social work too?

CAMHS are NHS

tabulahrasa · 04/08/2012 13:32

not social work I mean.

'I think if they don't tell you they can cover their backs when they don't actually do anything'

lol, there is that too

2old2beamum · 05/08/2012 18:03

Please may I ask what are social services?(tongue in cheek) My 2 have complex health needs and have continuing health care plans. We have no SW
We have not seen one since Sept 2009.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 05/08/2012 18:29

No SW here either! No respite, clubs, adaptations etc.

Is DS supposed to have his own room? Apparently.

HecateHarshPants · 05/08/2012 18:31

ime - bog all.

camhs are children's mental health service. My eldest has just had his appt through.

sickofincompetenceandbullshit · 05/08/2012 18:49

Our CWD SW sorted 1:1 for clubs and then direct payments, plus other referrals. In the days of money! BUT it has all continued ... Fingers crossed! Can be useful.

insanityscratching · 05/08/2012 18:51

Hecate are you going to CNDRH to see CAMHS? Can pm you the name of the psych who saw ds and who supported us in fight for SH school? Very good and sensitive to ds's needs.
Not at all impressed by the SW there who tried to sell basic ASD handling strategies as being the answer to ds's total withdrawal and appeared to know little more than the basics with regards to ASD.

tabulahrasa · 05/08/2012 18:58

Round here they're a bit mythical tbh, you hear tales, but no confirmed sightings, lol

I know that the next LA over offers all those things though

whatthewhatthebleep · 06/08/2012 13:13

I'm going through assessments (section 23)for us in the hope that we might be able to access 'direct payments' so I can organise support, etc myself....jumping through hoops a many....!!!

children's services disabilitiy team have been involved for nearly 4yrs and offered little in that time....

insanityscratching · 06/08/2012 13:23

Well after being told for the last fourteen years that we don't qualify as ds's needs and dd's on top aren't considered high enough to qualify for support. Since ds moved to independent specialist school they now consider us to meet the criteria even though life is far easier here now ds's needs are being met. Won't be jumping through their hoops though, couldn't put up with the intrusion into our lives.

littlelegsmum · 06/08/2012 14:25

Sorry for the intrusion. . However, both my dc have been referred to L. A. S. C. (language and social communications) aka children with disabilities team. It's never been explained why but they talk about assessments. Is this the same as your talking about or a little different. I'm in merseyside.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 06/08/2012 15:23

Same here insanity. Now we have spent phenominal amounts on proving that DS needs an independent special school, services are being offered that wouldn't have had he and us been left to deteriorate in the state non-system.

Not interested now though. Life has become infinitely better and it woukd have to be substantially worse to give my name or address to any of those barbarians.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 06/08/2012 16:12

Littlelegs, that team in my area is education rather than SS?

starfishmummy · 06/08/2012 17:02

We don't have a social worker for ds, but he does access activities run by the Childrens disability team's Short Breaks. (they are not very good activities......)

littlelegsmum · 06/08/2012 17:29

Thanks Ellen. That's the impression I was under but wasn't too sure after seeing this thread.

littlelegsmum · 06/08/2012 17:30

I'm very naive. Just a mere sn 'virgin' Hmm

insanityscratching · 06/08/2012 18:35

Star it's as though they now consider ds to have significant needs based on the school he is at rather than assessing his individual needs and our needs as a family which is ridiculous as our needs are less now. I'm definitely not taking up any offer of support, can't imagine they'll approve of my methods and would disregard the progress they have made as a result no doubt.Ds's school runs a holiday club that ds is automatically eligible to access and would prefer that option than any of the generic holiday clubs that no doubt would only be the option through a SW.
