McHappyPants2012 · 28/07/2012 21:46

Ds has austism, he struggles in school and he has the TA alot to keep him focused and on task.

I am going to appeal the descion, I feel so let down by the descion as its going to be another thing in the way.

What was the reason given for not funding it?

McHappyPants2012 · 28/07/2012 22:05

Does not meet criteria

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 28/07/2012 22:07

Do you know in what way?

JumpingThroughHoops · 28/07/2012 22:08

Is he statemented?

Wouldnt this be better in education? They would be better placed to help you

Sirzy · 28/07/2012 22:09

Yanbu to not be happy and appealing wont do any harm. Does he meet the criteria do you think?

c4rnsi1lk · 28/07/2012 22:12

Post in SN children op- this is not the best place to post about SN funding. Mnhq might move the thread if you ask them.

McHappyPants2012 · 28/07/2012 22:12

I think he does. I think he has been statemented as he has had the educational physiologist.

I just feel rather annoyed as it seems like every thing is always a struggle. I know it's going to be an uphill battle.

I'll message mnhq to move the thread

It's not that easy to get a child statmented so I'm sure they'd definitely let you know if he was?

McHappyPants2012 · 28/07/2012 22:17

I have lost track on all the reports I have had, I have a large film from all his appoinment.

LegoAcupuncture · 28/07/2012 22:24

Sad mcHappy.

If you're not sure if he has a statement or not, then he probably isn't statemented. It takes about 6 months to get one and your LEA have to stick with what is in it, so getting 1-1 funded woud have to be adhered to.

You can apply for your DS to get the ball rolling, you don't have to wait for the school.

Unsure how to start, but as I've seen you've asked for this to be moved to the SN boards, hopefully someone can point you in the right direction there.

DozyDuck · 28/07/2012 22:29

Ok first how old is DS
When was he diagnosed
What are his issues that you think means he needs a TA
Does he have behaviour problems? Is he behind academically?

If you don't know if he's statemented then he won't be statemented, but you sound really confused about the whole thing (it's very easy to be with all the paper work) so the first point of call in your case I think should be to contact your local parent partnership. Google and

Do this before you appeal, they'll be able to help and advise you.

Second thing to do is talk to your child's paediatrician, ed psych, etc etc, tell them the issues your facing and see if they can resend you their reports for evidence.

There is a group on FB that is very good with autism support but it's closed, if you inbox me I can give you details

McHappyPants2012 · 28/07/2012 22:36

Ds is 6 and only recently got the Dx He is behind his peers in school work and since he has had the TA keeping him on track he don't have many melt downs.

Thanks for the response dozy, you are right I am very confused with all this. The peadatrician suggested support groups and giving me alot of websites ect to get in contact with

There not much I can do now to September when he goes back so alot of time to research

c4rnsi1lk · 28/07/2012 22:42

Google IPSEA - they have lots of info about applying for a statement.

Lougle · 28/07/2012 22:42

It is almost certain that he isn't statemented - you can't mistake the process, and you would have had a big document through the post detailing all his needs, what they need to do about it, and you would have had to name a school.

McHappyPants2012 · 28/07/2012 22:44

Thanks for all the advice I have written them all down until I get to the main computer

you would know if ur child was statmented. You would have to sign to agree to assessment hen you would be informed of all reports. You would then be sent a letter explaining if a statment was going to be issued or not and the reasons for it.Then u get a proposed statment to look at and send back signed if you agree to it.
You can request statmenting yourself but its only a request for assessment.

Yes its a battle but if you have to do it if thats what it takes to put your child on a level playing field .if i can help you pm me i will do what i can

DozyDuck · 29/07/2012 06:35

I have pmed you the fb group but I can't read replies on the iPad (and I forgot my password to go on safari)

Isityouorme · 29/07/2012 08:55

Sorry but how can you not know if your child is or isn't statemented?

Just because it is school holidays that does not mean you can not take action now.

AbigailS · 29/07/2012 10:01

Before I say this, I know nothing about your child's needs - maybe they do need 1-1... but to play devil's advocate;
If every child with a diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, etc. had 1-1 most classrooms would be full of TAs. I would have at least five in my room.
You have said your child already has a lot of TA time; in my LA statements often say things like "access to..." or "10 hours a week support". What would you like the LA to provide that is different to that? So even the stress of going through statutory assessment may not give your child a full time personal TA.
As an aside it sometimes worries me that children with a personal TA become too adult dependent.

My suggestion is that you, as a parent, request statutory assessment for a statement - that can be done over the holidays, That will ensure the LA assess exactly what your child needs. Good luck.

DozyDuck · 29/07/2012 12:36

I agree with Abigail about the 1:1 my son needs 2:1 in a special school and is totally dependant on it. I hate it, school is trying to wean him off it, it just won't happen anytime soon. Sad

What are the child's needs?

McHappyPants2012 · 29/07/2012 21:20

He lacks concentration and needs someone to keep him on track. I think I am going to have a proper meeting at the school and find out what he needs.

His peadatrician has suggested getting dla and if he does get awarded it I will see if I can get him a tutor.

Thinking about it I really don't know what is going on with him. I been under a dark cloud for so long I need to sit down and work out where I am.

OP posts:
DozyDuck · 30/07/2012 12:22

Check your pms happy I have sent you the link to the group. If you haven't had a meeting at school yet then he isn't statemented. How old is he? Who is funding his TA at the moment. DLA forms are a nightmare unless the child need a lot more support than other children their age. That's what you have to prove. If you want to do that do it now as it takes ages to fill in the massive book of forms they send to you. You will also need the reports from other specialists as evidence.

If he can't concentrate in school will he concentrate with a tutor?

McHappyPants2012 · 31/07/2012 22:57

sorry for the late reply, i just need time to collect my thoughts i feel rather shit about myself atm. I know the school can reapply in 6 months and i have 2 months to appeal.
