Evening! Busy week at work for me. DH has started new job! Grin means I get the tv all to myself again.
Finalised statement with LEA. Meeting with future school went really well. Love the SENCO, Very hopeful for September.
Im happy today.

SauvignonBlanche · 13/07/2012 18:02

Evening all (we're early tonight!)
Had a good week, DS has been on work experience and so far, so good! Grin

lisad123 · 13/07/2012 18:07

Had a mad week of school visits. Dd2 starts reception and dd1 starts her new private school.
Two loads of new uniform to buy and find. Also went to number 10 for a charity I work with. Was very nice but sadly didn't get to punch my DC! Angry but his wife was late for meeting a group of autistic kids Confused

creatovator · 13/07/2012 18:20

Hi all,

Well done to mini Meerkat and great news about the statement and school Frustated

Wow Sauv work experience sounds impressive.

Lisa very posh Grin.

Good week generally for us, though DS was struggling on Wed. We went out for a meal... he wasn't happy and ended up hiding under the table. He also told the waitress that toffee sauce is not butterscotch and she should say it right... presumably the waitress thought he might not know what butterscotch sauce is.

The rest of the week has been fine. DCs have even played well together. I've also managed to get some uni work done, even though they're on hol. Grin

lisad123 · 13/07/2012 18:32

If you knew me in RL you would know how funny that posh comment was Grin
We choose that school because it's very small (18 to a year and 9 to a class) and their SENCO is a autism specialist. Plus they have us some funding towards her place Smile

creatovator · 13/07/2012 18:42

Lol Lisa. It's funny where we find ourselves at times. I've been to a very posh dinner at the Scottish Parliament because I was on a local business committee. I'm not posh either Grin.

The school sounds fab. We're having to look at High Schools now for DS. He's only got 2 years left at primary level. Where did that go Shock

insanityscratching · 13/07/2012 18:58

Hello all not a bad week here.

Oh well done to mini Meerkat, bet you are relieved about the statement and school Frustated.

Work experience sounds very grown up Sauv.

Lisa what was Sam Cam like then? Hate uniform shopping so am always glad dd grows so slowly I only buy every two to three years.

Sounds like a good week Creato.

Ds has had a good week at school and looking forward to next week when he'll be going out with his classmates celebrating the end of year.
The flour baby has been a PITA, dd was stressed so baby was foisted onto TA at school and me at home but she got her gold award anyway Grin
Two sports days this week and an awards ceremony next but hoping to get a bit of time to myself to enjoy the peace before they break up.
Need to get gifts for TAs and teachers as they have all been great this year any ideas?

lisad123 · 13/07/2012 19:03

Sam Cam seemed very nice, didn't get to say much she was busy with rest of people. She was late for the kids so knocked a few points off for that Grin

moosemama · 13/07/2012 19:07

Evening folks Smile

Attila, well done to your ds. You must have been really proud to watch him collecting his prize. Smile Enjoy your concert - looks like it's going to be a soggy one!

Busy week here, despite health being worse than ever.

Dh and I have finally managed to visit a few schools and think we know which one we want ds to go to. The good news is that it happens to be the one he wants to go to. Out of all the schools we've been to, it's the only one that really grabbed us and felt like somewhere ds would thrive.

Oddly enough, it's not the one that we were advised consider because it's so good with children who have ASD and is good at working with statemented children. We were shown round that school by two boys from the LSU (which ds wouldn't qualify for) and got a genuine picture of the school from the pupils' point of view, which was useful. Then we had a chat with the SENCO and while, yes, it does sound like they are all set up with systems in place to support statemented children who have ASD, there was just something that didn't quite feel right. Also, they have very high numbers of statemented children, some of whom it seems exhibit serious behavioural challenges and the LS department, whilst knowledgeable, seems stretched to the limits. It also seemed like achievement was low on the agenda compared to SNs support, iyswim and ds needs somewhere that he will be challenged academically, as he will quite happily coast if allowed.

The school we like has a relatively low number of statemented children to the other one (although I think probably fairly standard for a secondary), but is very well funded and still has a well resourced LS department, the staff were knowledgeable and the set up was well thought out. They were able to answer all of our questions without hesitation and there wasn't really anything that set off the old alarm bells. In addition they have some amazing extra curricular stuff that ds would absolutely love as well as lots of academic opportunities and options. Of course it also has the added benefit of being where ds's best friend is going - so in his view it's a done deal! Grin

LEA have surprised us by not responding to our latest letter by finalising as we expected, but instead issued a second proposed statement. Have only had a quick flick through, as I've been really quite poorly this week. They have actually made quite a few of our amendments, but of course none of the main 'sticking points'.

Given the downturn in my health, we are thinking about trying mediation now, rather than going straight to appeal. We will still go to tribunal if we have to and the forms are all ready to post if mediation doesn't work. In fact, dh and I are going to decide over the weekend whether we should just post the appeal forms anyway and then go to mediation whilst we are waiting for our date. It does seem that the LEA really doesn't want us to go to appeal, judging by their recent moves, so you never know, there may be some room for manouevre at mediation.

moosemama · 13/07/2012 19:09

Blush Oops, sorry for the mega post.

creatovator · 13/07/2012 19:10

Insanity We always try to do something that DCs write or make. Bought some small paintable things for candles this year and filled them with sweets. Found out favourite sweets first. We've also written poems or stories with teacher's and TA's names in them. Some folk club together and get beauty vouchers.

lisad123 · 13/07/2012 19:15

The girls chose and piece of jewellery for their TAs and female teachers. Nothing special just Tesco stuff but quite sweet. Dd1
Teacher is getting a water colour painting done by dd1 (shes very good at painting) in a frame and a bottle of wine.

creatovator · 13/07/2012 19:16

xposted Moose. Sorry your health isn't so great. Will pray. Good news about the school. We're doing the visiting too. Thinking of moving into our neighbouring council area as secondary schools seem to be good there. We've looked at 2 so far. We really like one. It would be MS, but like yours they were able to answer all our questions without hesitation and are used to loads of different kids. They have special music school which foreigners apply to, so the whole school has a musical ethos and DS is musical.

Still a few more to look at though.

starfish71 · 13/07/2012 19:19

Hi everyone

My memory is a bit shot this week but you all sound like it has been a pretty good week which is brilliant.

Wellone done to your DS Attila! frustrated congrats on final statement.
savigon glad work experience went well for your DS.
lisad You have had a very busy week! Hope No 10 was a good experience.
creavtor the last couple of years of primary school goes really quickly Confused

Sorry if I have missed anyone out, hope everyone else is doing ok too.

Been a mixed week here. DS2 had his school fete which was fun but it poured down but didnt stop DS2 from enjoying throwing sponges at the teachers! :)

Had a bit of a light-bulb moment with DS1 and am thinking a bit more out of the box regards to his education, have contacted OU and had a chat with them about him doing a short computer programming course. DS very keen.

Still a bit low but am trying a course of hypnotherapy to help deal with my own anxiety so who knows! worth a try :)

Sorry about your poor health Moose, hope your right re statement and that mediation is enough :)

Hypnotherapy sounds very calming Star, good luck

Kind of a mixed week here, Ds has not been to good at school this week, but he went around to a friends house for his very 1st tea invite and that went very well, his friends Mum also seems like a lovely lady and we are having ds's friend round next week, I'm so happy for him that I've kinda let the school thing slide a little, though I know I shouldn't Blush

Hi [waves]
I haven't been on the friday night thread before but wanted to share some good news this week with people who understand, hope that's ok.
Feels like the first time somebody is actually helping us and I'm feeling positive.
Speech therapist on 4th session with dd and she is very pleased with progress +keeps saying how great she is doing (I'm chuffed with how its going as well, dd actally SAT at the table with her for the whole 1hr session 2day!).
And she is helping organise for 1:1 help for dd to start a playgroup in Sept for a couple of days a week (currently with CM) I have been so worried about her starting school next Jan but now I feel this experience is a great way to help prepare her. They said they will train the person who will be doing the 1:1 to do the speech therapy things that they do with dd. :) :) :)

LollipopViolet · 13/07/2012 19:51

Hi all, big day today.

I graduated from University :)

Aaaand, I might have a job working for a well known phone company that does things 4 it's customers (hinty hint!). The position is in a call centre, handling calls from people who've asked to be contacted, and it was advertised through an agency.

They're being really good - they've given me til 5pm Monday to look at buses and things and decide if I want to do the journey every day. I get the feeling they'd be nice about breaks for my eyes, if I found I needed them too. Although, I think they already give eye breaks - hours would be 9am til 8pm, but it says it's 8.5 hours a day...

I do want the job, it sounds like there's potential for movement within the company - possibly to something more related towards my degree.

Davros · 13/07/2012 19:56

Dear Moose, sorry to hear you are unwell. I haven't read everyone's lovely posts, just a few. I do love MN SN, I recommend it to people all the time. These posts and tone of this thread are so uplifting.

moosemama · 13/07/2012 19:58

Starfish. Dh and ds1 are learning C# via a free course on the Microsoft website. It's not easy to find but the link is here.

Ds and dh are enjoying learning together.

The only thing is that MS have kind of archived it, which is why it's not easy to find, so there might be a risk of it disappearing at some point. Might be a good way of seeing if your ds is interested enough to stick with it before you shell out for OU though.
