dd needs more fruit how do I make a smoothie?

DD's consultant has recommended that I that I try to get her to eat more fruit. It is the one thing she has trouble eating so she suggesting smoothies and using yogurt, Never made one in my life any ideas?

put any fruit that's soft into food processor and add yoghurt and whizz! I like banana and strawberry smoothies. Apples aren't very good to blend

I love banana and mango. You could have a look at the commercially made ones in the supermarket for ideas of what fruits to put togetherSmile

Use bananas, a bit of full-fat yogurt, and a bit of full-fat milk. Then you add at least one of:

  • apricots
  • strawberries
  • plums
  • nectarines
  • blueberries
  • blackberries
  • raspberries

Or similar. Apples, oranges and plums aren't great.

Get bags of frozen fruit from the supermarket too- great for blackberries, raspberries etc... And cheaper

Oh I just made one right this afternoon I'm addicted to them!

I brought Raspberries, Blueberries and Strawberries. You could add bananas even.
Anyway, chop the ones that need it, put them in your blender, add yoghurt (Try Onken Summer Biopot if DD isn't keen on plain yog) and some fresh orange juice (or any fresh juice that your DD will drink, I also like the tropical ones) Then blend them up and drink.

Hope she likes them , I've only just realised how picky I used to be with fruit and what a battle my mum had on her hands! Could you try grapes or a slice of melon after dinner as a pudding? Especially if you chop the chunks of melon so DD has no excuse that "it's too messy to eat!"

Just don't add Kiwi fruit. The seeds cause a really unpleasant peppery astringent taste when crushed in the blender.

I agree with Jac - the bags of Forest Fruits and Summer fruits in the freezer section are great, and much cheaper than using fresh. But they can be quite tart - add half a tsp of honey, or if you are using apple juice as a base, that will be v sweet.

Mumatuks. It's not that dd won't eat it she will eat ANYTHING but just has trouble chewing fruit. Not a lot stay's inBlush

Ah Sorry ISWYM. Suggestion for a blender, esp if on a budget, I got my Braun Multiquick (model MR 4050 HC) for £20 in Tesco. Really good. Has 3 attachments (chopper grinder and whisk). and one big long tub for making smoothies in. Really can't fault it.

Oh, yes, whatever you get, get a wand blender, not one of those old style ones with the jar and the blades. And if the wand is metal, you can use it to make soup, very practical.

(And do not get a "smoothie maker", those look like a real scam, and also hard to clean.)

Or get those innocent smoothies. They are about 2.99 for 4 but they are often on offer in waitrose. Is worth a whole portion of fruit and they go down well because of nice box and straw etc.

I do have one of those things.. jug and things that you turn on and it blends things is that what you mean by a wand can't think what it;s called

A wand blender is one that's a stick with a blade on the end (essentially). You can put it in any container and it will blend the contents. Much better than an old-style blender, as it's easier to clean, and you can use it in any container. Those are great for making smoothies.

sorry to have seemed so thick just couldn't think how to describe. I have one of those. I think what I was going to get was more like a liquidizer would that not work?

try the bbc recipe finder website - they have a good number on there. If you need to get protein into her too try adding some silken tofu (from the health shop) to the blender. Even the fussiest eater can't tell it's there

I use a wand blender to make smoothies. Liquidisers are hard to clean and annoying. And they take up too much space.

buzylizy - my dd1 is going off fruit at the moment and I need to up her fruit intake... am going to try a recipe I found for peach muffins....

I find if you're going to use berries, buying Innocent smoothies or (supermarket own-brand) can be cheaper, once you've spent a second mortgage on a packet of 42 bluberries and picked out the manky ones. Especially if you get one big carton rather than individual servings.

back - sorry about that had to take dd1 to docs.

Makes 24 apparently

olive oil
3cups plain flour
1tbsp baking powder
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup caster sugar
140g peaches cooked and diced ( I just bought a tin of peaches)
1 cup milk
125g unsalted butter
2 eggs lightly beaten

preheat oven to 180degrees
In large bowl sift flour and baking powder
then add remaining ingredients

Stir with a wooden spoon until well combined

spoon mixture into muffin pans and bake for 20 - 25 minutes.

I guess you could put any fruit you liked in there.

I found with dd1 - upping her vege intake of things like carrots, broccoli and courgettes usually helps.

I also have a gloop recipe that I mix in with her yoghurt or water it down to a juice consistency and let her drink it.

1 ripe pear peeled and chopped
3 pitted prunes
1 tsp brown sugar
a little water

simmer until soft and then puree.

I then freeze it in ice cube trays and take out what I need.

Definitely agree with Innocent smoothies - they're a huge hit in our house. J loves the humour on the packs as well. Be careful with supermarket brands though, as most contain juices from concentrate whereas Innocent is all fresh juice.

Muffins are a good idea too Eidsvold. I make very chocolatey ones with loads of bananas mashed into them - not only do they taste great but the bananas keep them from drying out so I only have to make them once a week (that's if I can stop dh scoffing them under a sea of custard).

Innocent Smoothies are pasteurised, though, and often contain apple juice as a sweetener (I think?). If you make smoothies at home, sticking to seasonal or seasonal-ish fruit, they do come up cheaper.

You can make them with just banana, milk and yogurt, anyway.
