Went to visit the PRU this morning. It did surprise me to be honest. Seems like they have good staff, quiet environment, similar children to DS, experienced with children 'on the spectrum'.

Just come off the phone with ASD advisory teacher who told me she can see DS doing well there..

Sad she had spoken to head case officer and that reason they haven't given statement is because he doesn't need one to go there.

I cried. I know she works for the LA but she kept saying "do you really want to put yourself through an appeal when he could have everything he needs at the PRU".

I will pick myself up but I am doubting myself now that I will be doing the right thing. BUT I know things can go wrong, that is why we are where we are now. He needs the protection of a statement doesn't he?

Just wanted to say well done.

Been following this thread and it never ceases to amaze me what the LA will try!

Woohoo!!!

Good news from Ghent indeed!!:).

What Leonie has written re the statement.

Never forget that support must be both specified and quantified.

Thank you all so much, really couldn't have got this far without all your good advice and support. Thanks

I am keeping my appeal papers standing by and will be prepared to appeal if the statement is too woolly!

Am so happy though! :)

Delighted Starfish!

The PRU and NIL really was an indefensible decision. i'm glad they now seen sense.

Best wishes

Yeh!! Well done for hanging in there.

Thank you! Am being cautious as not sure what the proposed looks like and have a feeling they won't want to name the ASD unit but have got an educational solicitor on standby! And of course my wonderful SN mums to help me! :)

That's brilliant news! grin]

Make sure they stick to the time frame now, and have in mind now what you want in the Statement. How do you want your DS's needs described? What support do you want? Which school are you asking t be named in Part 4?

As said above, everything should be clear (no jargon), quantified and specified. Anything less is unacceptable. If the proposed Statement comes back and is wooly, suggest changes yourself before launching an appeal. I went as far as writing up what I wanted Part 2 and 3 to look like, and tey actually used it in the final Statement Wink

mariamariam · 26/06/2012 22:23

Yay!!!! That's brilliant. Now all you need is a decent watertight statement and you're home and dry. Hopefully if the important points are all already agreed, and you do the re-drafting donkey work for them, the LEA will be sensible [crosses fingers].

Cos tribunal and rubbish statements really aren't any cheaper or easier for them in the long run. And although the system is creaky and fairly useless, there are plenty of lea workers and professionals who want children to have adequate education as a minimum.
Definitely don't forget the appeal deadline though! If you appeal on grounds of NIL, its fine to withdraw because you later got the statement. Presume different deadline if need to appeal content?

starfish71 · 29/06/2012 21:25

Obviously haven't had the proposed statement yet but am wondering what to do if I can't find or get DS to go to a suitable school? I know you must think I am unhinged trying the PRU (very cautiously) but what if DS can't even manage that? What are my options with a statement in place?

Am having a bad few days and it all seems bleak. I had conversations today with my sister and my best friend, niece is doing so incredibly well in year 10 and my best friend's DS has had a fab report, he is in an ASD unit but he is so much more 'sociable' than DS.. Am really happy for them but it's hard when everything is so difficult for my two boys.

Know I am moaning but am wondering what do I do next if DS struggles to even get out of the house?
