DS going in for an operation

Thanks to those of you who posted such supportive comments when he was going for an interview the other week - didn't get the job.

Now he has been called in at the last minute for an operation. We were expecting it, but it has been very sudden. He is going in on Saturday.

DS is on the autistic spectrum and has learning difficulties. He is in his early twenties and is generally very loving and kind. However, he does have huge violent outbursts from time to time and these can be very difficult to handle and pretty frightening.

The operation is minor, although does involve a general anaesthetic. It will solve one of his major worries, but of course he is scared about the whole thing and very worried about pain and the recovery.

Personally, I think Saturday is going to be a pretty shit day for all of us! DH is also disabled and so I am going along to the hospital to support both of them (DH offered to take him without me as he wants me to have a rest - I work full time despite being very ill myself).

I don't have any practical advice but want to send positive thoughts for your DS and to you and DH.

Really hope it goes well.

Thanks for your reply starfish71. Not really after advice, more of a moan!

GurlwiththeFrothyCurl · 31/05/2012 22:01

Only a small one! But I do come on here and whinge a bit! It does help. :)

Have you spoke to hospital about your son? Really hope they are supportive and understanding of his anxieties.

coff33pot · 31/05/2012 22:10

He hasnt had much time at all to prepare has he poor chap!

Can you drive there the day before and have a word with one of the doctors to put his mind at ease re the pain etc? and so that he could discuss any worries he might have?

Hope it is not too stressful for you all and the op goes ok x

GurlwiththeFrothyCurl · 31/05/2012 22:33

DH took for a pre-op assessment yesterday and came back livid. It was a nightmare! I won't go into the boring details but it took hours and they made a nasty mess of taking blood from poor DS.

They didn't seem to understand the implications of ASD at all. DH tried and tried to explain, because we don't want him to have a major meltdown!

oh my! no wonder your ds is worried! What a bad experience for him.

Lets hope you meet some people that actually listen to you tomorrow.

The ones that do the ops and observations are usually the nicest and calmest of the bunch.

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 01/06/2012 06:58

hope all goes well tomorrow for you all, with a much more understanding staff!

starfishmummy · 01/06/2012 08:04

Just got back after taking son for operation. Seems to have gone well, but goodness the NHS organises itself in strange ways for patients. The clinical staff are brilliant, but the systems are crap. Had to arrive at 7.30, but he didn't go into theatre until 12.00! Poor lad was beside himself by then. Anyway, he is home, groggy and in bed.

coff33pot · 02/06/2012 16:50

Oh thats good. At least hes home now safe and well :)

It was the same for me for wisdom tooth removal. Arrived for 8.30 and I didnt go down till 4.30!! And that was only because I was getting dressed to go home lol Grin Then they said I had to sit there for 4 hours after due to anaesthetic no chance I got my DH to wheel me out pronto!

At least its over for him and its all over now x

GurlwiththeFrothyCurl · 02/06/2012 16:58

Thanks, coff33pot, now we have the fun and games of the healing process. He's not good with pain! This house will be Moan City for a few days I think!

But actually, we are very proud of him. He was absolutely terrified, but still managed to speak nicely to the staff and wowed them all with his good manners.

GurlwiththeFrothyCurl · 02/06/2012 21:53

Thanks to everyone. I'm now exhausted with the stress of worrying about my "boy" but he seems to be reasonably OK now.
