Usually on here moaning so thought I would redress the balance a bit. Had a meeting yesterday afternoon with ds1's teacher, the autism outreach team the SENCO and the SALT. And they're all really pleased. The school have said they are stunned by the level of support they have been given, and that they've never had this much support for a child before, they said ds1 is a sweety and they're really pleased with how he's doing. He even asked for the toilet using a PECS card yesterday (his LSA was out of the room so he asked the general class TA). So all is now going really well. The SALT has put a system in place for "scoring" how he does on his SALT activities each day (between 0 and 4 where 4 is needs lots of physical prompts and doesn't really understand what he's doing- and 0 is did it all himsefl perfectly).

Apparently he has a cushion he sits on at circle time (to get him sitting down I guess) and all the children try to sit near him. At break time they get him to give his apple pecs card to a different child each day for the child to give him the apple and apparently all the kids fight over that as well.

So we're pretty happy.

CnR · 19/11/2003 09:54

Brilliant news!

fio2 · 19/11/2003 09:55

Thats great news jimjamnsSmile you give me hope, now it looks likely our dd WILL have to go to mainstream.......

Jimjams · 19/11/2003 09:57

Oh his temporary LSA was there as well. He seems quite keen on her now. She is heading off to do teacher training next year though so she won;t be applying for the full time post. The appoint someone at the end of this month.

fio2- with enough support and a suitably enlightened school I think it can work well.

That's great news! Thanks, Jimjams. You've made me feel a lot better about next September too.

janh · 19/11/2003 10:36

Jimjams, that is such good news

(We always knew he is a sweety of course.)

Blu · 19/11/2003 10:52

I used to think that phrase 'waiting to exhale' was so cheesy.....

tigermoth · 19/11/2003 13:05

jimjams, happy news! I am so pleased the other children are getting on well with your son and he's finding his feet there. It's so good to have a positive school meeting. My situation is far different to yours but IME life feels so much better when I've had good news as opposed to the more usual bad news from school.

at them all fighting over the apple pecs card. Can just picture it.

tamum · 19/11/2003 15:45

Oh, I'm so pleased jimjams! He's obviously won them all over, and I'm not a bit surprised. He's done so well, he really has.

(I saw JS last Friday BTW!)

mrsforgetful · 19/11/2003 16:34

Oh, GREAT news Jimjams, I am so glad that things have turned out well. I was especially impressed by him using the PECS card to the gebreal TA......massive progress, and you must be so proud of him. Good on you both.

Jimjams - that sonds really positive. Glad that things seem to be working well for yor dh!
How old id he btw?

tamum · 19/11/2003 19:22

Eww, jimjams, how revolting! I'm glad I didn't know and feel obliged to check. Maybe he's been using Head and Shoulders (Head and Eyebrows)? We were at the Royal Society, doncha know (open to all who were williing to pay 25 quid actually ).

Jimjams · 19/11/2003 19:30

he's 4 popsycal.

Tamum- try using a microscope after him- we had to clean the eyepieces first The Royal Soc brings back memories- those sorts of places always bring out the best in JS- he's quite sociable when he wants to be.

DS1 made me laugh today- we arrived back home from school and ds2 had fallen asleep, so i tried to get ds1 out of the car with all the bags first of all- but he absolutely refused. He was shouting and getting my hand and trying to put it on ds2. Not sure if this was concern that I had forgotten his brother or annoyance that I had changed the order from usual. An improvement from the timehe would shudder whenever ds2 touched him though.
