Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

We have a result for ds's statement - LA conceded, tribunal abandoned, we have ABA of sorts, everybody happy!

As title says: we have come to an agreement with our LA, so have withdrawn our appeal.

From a rubbish, vague, unspecified statement that steadfastly refused to even mention ABA let alone provide anything like it, we now have up to 12 months of ABA-lite.

We have 25 hours a week of LSA support, and the LA will pay for the LSA to have training in ABA - and/or will employ our tutors as LSAs. Targets to be agreed jointly with our supervisor. 5 days training a year, plus 5 group sessions a year for all tutors/LSAs.

SALT up from 3 hours a year to weekly sessions.

It became clear a couple of months ago that ds is making such good progess (cos of ABA, obviously) that he doesn't need an intensive programme or a 1:1 shadow any more, so this is better than we could have wished for.

And great for the school - they get a brilliantly trained extra pair of hands milling around, helping out, and initiating great games for the kids.

Now just have to kick the school's arse into shape about providing what is in the statement - gloves are off now.

Thank you to everyone who has given me such fantastic help & advice - especially starlight, agnes, AT, wetaugust, and silverfrog and probably loads of others I've forgotten Smile. And agnes in particular thanks for the recommendation of FS - she was amazing.

Hmm. Ds at school, dd at nursery today. Feels very strange that for the first time in 2 years I have a day to myself where I'm not scouring the net for info, writing reports, ploughing through emails, speaking to advocate/EP/SALT/ABA consultant/school, chasing up other people, organising files etc. Don't know what to do with myself.

Actually that's not true - I know exactly what I'm going to do, which is go shopping and spend DP's money which would otherwise have gone on tribunal & ABA costs Grin

I owuld hazard a guess that FS is Fiona Slomovic - a well known (and respected) advocate. there are quite a few on this board who have used her.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 12/01/2012 14:03

Brilliant news, Bialy. Well done, indeed, and well done MN SN ladies, by the sound of it! Grin

tryingtokeepintune · 12/01/2012 14:12

Yes I did mean Fiona Slomovic - didn't want to name her but hey ho Grin

And the thanks should go equally to her and this board. Honestly, if it wasn't for people here I wouldn't have known how to successfully apply for a statement, know how to check it, know whether to accept/refuse it, know how to appeal it, know who to go to for help, and basically how to play the long game to get the support that is actually available, rather than what they try and fob you off with.

It was also a former MN poster (now left, sadly) who in RL introduced me to ABA.

Shucks you guys. Feel like Gwyneth Paltrow making an Oscar acceptance speech

pipin the thing is I guess in their eyes (and if they were ever subject to a FOI request) they would not count this as them funding an ABA programme. Just funding a bit of ABA training for a TA who will be working to IEPs agreed jointly. Not the same thing at all. Oh no. Wink

Brilliant news - well done.

ABA Lite is working really well for us.

Did you end up changing consultant btw?

bialystockandbloom · 13/01/2012 18:38

Thank you all again Smile I'm still revelling in having it Sorted, still can't quite believe it really, despite having the new statement signed and sealed.

Jaxx how does your programme work? Is it in school? I'd be interested to compare notes.

Yes we have got a fabby new supervisor (can't believe you remembered!). We're sort of keeping our overall consultant on a very infrequent basis, but the new supervisor will be basically running it, as we prob don't need much consultant input, and actually the new supervisor's approach is much more suited to ds.

Well done bialy. It sounds like other kids in the school will benefit indirectly from new knowledge and fresh approach.

I don't know your whole story, would you mind saying how far your ds has come on the aba so far?
