Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

We have a result for ds's statement - LA conceded, tribunal abandoned, we have ABA of sorts, everybody happy!

As title says: we have come to an agreement with our LA, so have withdrawn our appeal.

From a rubbish, vague, unspecified statement that steadfastly refused to even mention ABA let alone provide anything like it, we now have up to 12 months of ABA-lite.

We have 25 hours a week of LSA support, and the LA will pay for the LSA to have training in ABA - and/or will employ our tutors as LSAs. Targets to be agreed jointly with our supervisor. 5 days training a year, plus 5 group sessions a year for all tutors/LSAs.

SALT up from 3 hours a year to weekly sessions.

It became clear a couple of months ago that ds is making such good progess (cos of ABA, obviously) that he doesn't need an intensive programme or a 1:1 shadow any more, so this is better than we could have wished for.

And great for the school - they get a brilliantly trained extra pair of hands milling around, helping out, and initiating great games for the kids.

Now just have to kick the school's arse into shape about providing what is in the statement - gloves are off now.

Thank you to everyone who has given me such fantastic help & advice - especially starlight, agnes, AT, wetaugust, and silverfrog and probably loads of others I've forgotten Smile. And agnes in particular thanks for the recommendation of FS - she was amazing.

Hmm. Ds at school, dd at nursery today. Feels very strange that for the first time in 2 years I have a day to myself where I'm not scouring the net for info, writing reports, ploughing through emails, speaking to advocate/EP/SALT/ABA consultant/school, chasing up other people, organising files etc. Don't know what to do with myself.

Actually that's not true - I know exactly what I'm going to do, which is go shopping and spend DP's money which would otherwise have gone on tribunal & ABA costs Grin

Bialy,

I keep trying to post on here but have to sign off for the tears. I'm absolutely over the moon for you. I feel like I KNOW your ds a little but and hearing that both he and you won this battle that is extremely hard to fight is just such great news for you and for all of us.

Be very proud of yourself for your determination and for his progress.

Thanks again.... have had a wonderful tribunal-free weekend for the first time in over 6 months!

star thank you Smile I hope you know just how much I am hoping for a similarly satisfactory result for you too. Talk about determination - you wrote the book Grin You are an inspiration.

Honestly I can say if it wasn't for you and others on this board I would have given up long ago. Would probably have never even started the fight.

oodles we started ABA in Sep 2010, just around the time ds was diagnosed. He was 3 and 1/2 at the time. He was verbal but non-conversational. Obsessive. Repetitive. No imaginative play whatsoever. Controlling of everything. Huge tantrums. Never initiated contact with anyone other than us. Had no friends. Showed little interest in other children apart from very familiar ones.

Now he is unrecognisable. He can get quite anxious still (eg using public toilets is still an issue) but 1000 times more easy going and flexible in terms of behaviour. Tantrums a thing of the past. Can get a bit stuck on some things but easy to move on. Has genuine friends. Initiates and loves playing with other children, though doesn't keep up with more sophisticated games that easily. Fantastic imaginative play (eg today spontaneously acted out a long and complex conversation with two playmobile characters. Not sure how much it made sense but hey Grin).

Hand on heart this is down to ABA. I saw this happen before my eyes.

Lenin he is 4.9, will be 5 in April.
