Drama homework has completely broken DD2

she has just bagged up everything she has to do with school, uniform, bag, books, everything and put it in the bin.

she flatly refused to go on wednesday. went today but came home in a mood and now has just flipped out over the homework.

Arse. I suspect this may be worse than usual.

yes - until you make this first move, nothing will happen. school clearly are not bothered, your dd is not coping.

yo need to set the ball rolling, and then it all follows on from there. just one letter - I sent exactly what IPSEA suggested. others have listed concerns and issues within the initial letter.

be warned that the LA may turn your dd down for assessment - this is a standard delaying tactic, to weed out those who are not wise to their game. if that happens, then ask away - people will know the next moves for you (appeal etc)

but honestly, the process is going to take months as it is - don't delay the start of it. the only one missing out is your dd. it matters not to the school whether she gets an education or not, or is helped to overcome her difficulties. in 3 years they never have to see her again anyway. but it matters to yuo, and to her. she needs you.

Drama is a major issue for DS1 too so I sympathise, just be glad you are not in Scotland, the new curriculum recently brought in puts major emphasis on group and pair working and verbal presentations(obviuosly a nightmare for kids with ASD). Drama work and script writing now pops up in everything from German to history and geography... much ranting from DS when he gets home (and he often gets a fail mark for those sections which upsets him).
No advice I'm afraid, different up here so no relevant experience.

school haven't replied to this mornings email. i think they should have done and quite sad that they haven't and so obviously don't care.

yes bollocks to them
you have a plan now anyway so 2 fingers to them

AtYourCervix · 06/01/2012 18:49

i do have a plan. come monday morning i will be back asking for various kicks and hands to hold while i see it through. otherwise, as usual, i will just pretend it didn't happen and hope it has gone away.

as usual at the end of the week DD2 is transformed into the funny cheerful girl she should be, instead of the miserable agressive wench she is all week. (apart from the pMT and bickering with DD1).

The online school that AMumInScotland over on the HE boards uses and speaks very highly of is Interhigh.

HE can be a fab solution for spectrummy children - I know that in some senses it lets the authorities off the hook of providing for their needs, but then, if they've been abjectly failing to do that for years and years, it's possible that you are better off channelling your energy into supporting your daughter in educating herself yourselves rather than spending that energy on trying to get the State to provide something suitable (but I completely understand that lots of people on this board DO think the best way to channel the energy is in getting the State to provide what the child needs - it's different for every family)

HE until the statementing process is over? As a temporary measure?

Stick with school, but on wednesdays, join in with whatever local HE activities are going on? That might help her make an informed decision about whether to jump ship or not.

(there's a really useful snippet in Aspergirls about how tough school can be... I found it really helpful to read about how schools can be experienced from an explicitly ASD perspective)
