Oooooohhh this is one thing that really gets me going, I don't even have a car, but I have a badge for dd, to use when we're in my dad's car even though my dad is disabled and has his own badge.
This happened a few weeks ago to us, parking in Tesco, and as I got out of the car some woman pulled up behind us shouting abuse at me for having the nerve to take up a disabled space...I just stared at her opened the boot of the car and slammed down my dad's wheelchair next to her door, then slammed down dd's major next to it..I don't think I've ever seen anyone go so red before

My DD is registered disabled and is on the "I Count" register but we are not entitled to the mobility part of DLA. Although I work, her DLA pays for her swimming lessons (twice weekly) and ballet lessons. Not because I want her to be an olympic swimmer and prima ballerina (not with the size of her anyway!) but because both activities are good for her muscles, co-ordination, balance, etc. My mum has neuropathy and cannot walk unaided (has to use a frame indoors and a wheelchair if we go shopping). She cannot drive either of her 2 cars at the moment due to the neuropathy. She gets DLA (or the older persons version of it, whatever it is called - she is now 60) but she will NOT apply for the blue badge or the car tax. The only reason I want her to apply for the blue badge is that because we cannot park in the disabled bays, I end up having to push her in a wheelchair from miles away (well, it seems like miles) and end up carrying in my arms my large 4 year old. I cannot push my 4 year old in a pushchair and wheel my mum's wheelchair. It would make MY life so much easier if my mum applied for the badge as it would be my strength/muscles that won't have to work so hard but my mum feels as if she is "giving in" if she applies for the badge.

I also get the comments in supermarkets/shops with my DD who is still in nappies. They look at her with a sneer on their face as though to say, "oh dear, such a big girl and still in nappies?". Yes, she is tall for her age, and yes, she is still in nappies but it is not because I am "babying" her, it is because of her condition. I look right back at them. She might look a bit "different" but we are all different in our own ways.

What really gets my goat are people who abuse the system. there was a great programme on it the other day..... and I'm glad the people got found out and imprisoned.

It really annoys me when people have the gaul to use a disabled bay just to quickly pop in to mcdonalds or the bank! I tackled someone once, and they just laughed at me saying 'what? you gonna clamp my car then?' I was SO tempted to accidently crash my trolley into the car....... but I'm just not like that. So I keyed it instead!

only joking.

lucyep · 19/01/2006 15:17

We too get abuse hurled at us for using disabled bays. I've got to the point where I scream back at them. If I had a £ for every comment I have had over the last 4 years then I would be quite rich by now lol!

As for people reckoning that you are rolling in it because you receive DLA for your child and have a motability car, well I know for one I would swap it all to have my child fit and healthy. I would swap the endless hospital appointments, admissions, extortionate hospital parking fees, stress, hassle ............ the list could go on for ages and send you all to sleep!

Dd is in a major buggy, like the majority of our special children on here. I am absolutely fed up with the stares, and comments like "you lazy little girl, you really should be walking" and "mummy why is THAT girl in a pushchair?" Oh if only half of them knew......... It upsets Dd so much that she doesn't like going out and would prefer to stay in the car!

My answer to Dd is that these people are so small minded, can't see beyond their own noses and problems and aren't as lucky as us to have such a special little girl in their lives. If only they knew that she was waiting for a new heart.......

grrr these stories make me so

ds2 doesnt come out much (we have badge) but when he does I make sure I get a disabled parking space.
I kick off until I do, dh hides his head in his hands, if I get a glare before his wheelchair comes out, I glare back and ask what the problem is.

Most of the blue rinse brigade are arrogant.

As for DLA I am ROFL at how loaded we are
as for carers allowance-takes the p doesnt it

Davros · 19/01/2006 17:47

Piffle, I think you're right about the car tax, I don't apply for it either. I understood that the car had to be used for the disabled person and registered in their name. Obviously a lot of people ignore that as its ridiculous if you're a parent but I'd rather not for some reason (must be mad). I park all the time for free and abuse DS's badge because I got SOOOO many parking tickets when we first got the badge, just from making mistakes as the rules are so complicated if you're in a controlled parking zone. And some of them were just ridiculous, school buses only outside the swimming pool at 6pm! etc
