Indigo's Proud Happy Thread

I am so excited / thrilled / happy!

DD (age 8 / Y4) has/had severe 'dyslexia'. The symptoms she has are:

  • Unable to learn to read
  • Unable to spell (Still gets 2 letter words wrong)
  • Slow processing
  • Huge memory problems
  • Word Finding difficulties
  • Auditory processing difficulties
  • Eye tracking / convergence problems

We have been doing lots of different therapies with her, and are slowly making progress on all fronts. At the moment she is on the cusp of learning to read.

However, she had such a breakthrough with her 'word finding problems' last night, I can't believe it.

Normally if I ask her what she did in Maths I get an answer like this:
'I don't know what we did, but on the whiteboard was a 1 and a line and a 4' (I assume she was doing fractions)
Or a few weeks ago she said 'I don't know what it's called, but it was a line with a dot and a dot' (She was talking about division)

Last night I asked what she did in maths, and she said:
'Fractions' I couldn't believe it (that she knew the word), so I said, 'What did you learn about fractions', and she said:
'They have a numerator at the top, and a denominator at the bottom'!!!!!!!!

Absolutely unbelievable. She's never, ever had language like that before.

The thing that has changed is 2 weeks ago we went to Tinsley House, and started the first stage of their treatment plan which is to follow the Brain Food Plan . (Which involves multi-vitamins, dietary changes, and exercises for the cerebellum)

Tinsley House said it would help with her word finding difficulties - but I never expected it to help so dramatically, and in only 2 weeks.

DS1 and DS2 are also following the same plan, and have also made amazing progress in 2 weeks - but I wanted this thread to be about DD :) Who has worried me the most these last 2 years.

Different bits of Omega 3. The supplement should say on it how much EPA and DHA is contained in it....

I have researched supplements looooots...

dHA is The primary building building block of brain tissue and adequate amount is essential for proper brain development. EPA is for improving memory, Combined omega 3 and 6 help to reduce anxiety so you get better eye contact, Omega 9 is not as important however if I recall right Improves the immune function. So in my opinion you need the right ration od dha and EPA and some of the cheaper brands just don't have enough. I find Eskimo kids 369 working for both DS.

Appologies for the typos typing with one hand on the ipad and holding the baby with the other

IndigoBell · 02/12/2011 16:40

It's not quite that simple because EPA can be converted into DHA but not the other way round.....

Of all those studies about Omega Oils being beneficial, the studies which have shown the most positive results have being using higher dosages of EPA then the studies which weren't so conclusive......

Most good quality omega 3 brands usually have higher level epa

IB

W00T!!!! So happy for you.

Very interesting thread.

I used to buy fish oil but never knew about the EPA and DHA bit. Or about Zinc and Magnesium.

IndigoBell · 03/12/2011 09:25

Debbie - her memory and slow processing have def improved as well. I know those are 2 things you're very concerned about.

She asked to take part in the spelling test ( because I'd agreed with her teacher there was no point in her doing them) - and then got all the words right after only practising them once!

She also has 6 lines in the school play - and is able to remember them!

Suffice it it say she's never had such a large part before :)

Fabulous. Just ordered the Brain Food book, cant wait to read it :)

nightcat · 03/12/2011 11:11

re zinc, in my ds I noticed that the fluidity of his speech, thinking and memeory considerably improved, for him it was a month or so after we started supplementing. I don't do strict vits regime and try working with foods, but give him zn maybe 2-3 times p/week.

Zinc is V important, I really don't understand why drs only ever test fro iron and not zinc, but ZN is often deficient esp if gut is not working properly.

blueShark · 03/12/2011 12:37

This should go on a supplements thread but since it's mentioned here I should say when DS w asnt keen on too many supplements I used this as it has most vitamins and minerals, omega, prebiotics, enzymes.

However these contain most things he is deficient in and recommended for children with developmental, gastrointestinal and behaviour issues.

chocjunkie · 03/12/2011 13:12

blueshark, i am looking for a good fishoil to try with DD (asd, s&l issues) and thought about eskimo oil. I saw your DSs take it. Does it taste fishy/foul?

blueShark · 03/12/2011 13:47

Just little bit and they do orange and tropical flavour, our household prefers orange

Indigo -

Are the floradix vitamins the actual ones that Tindsley house prescribes??

I have just ordered the book you mentioned. DS has cerebral palsy, but I think there are cross overs.

I was already giving DS the floradix children's vitamin liquid. I've ordered the magnesium and zinc one but am a bit worried that both bottles have quite a lot of vitamin D in them. I don't want to overdose DS on Vitamin D.

If Tindsley house did recommend these products, did they mention anything about the Vitamin D??

Thank you.

IndigoBell · 06/12/2011 14:50

Tinsley House recommends taking both floradix vitamins. So I presume together they don't have too much vitamin D.

The safe upper limit of Vit. D for a healthy adult is 250 micrograms, or 10,000 IU daily. - I think those supplements together are a long way off that.

Thank you Indigo,

DS is only 4 though, so I wonder whether the safe limit will be the same, probably not. I'll see if I can find out somewhere.

Also - well you may not know this, as you give different supplements I think - but tonight DS woke up needing to wee desperately. I think the vitamins (he had one before tea and one after) must have made him need to wee. He doesn't drink that much unfortunately, so it can't be drinking liquids.

Do you give the floradix to your other two children - if so when do you give them the floradixes?

Thanks BlueShark - will give the Source of Life a try as I can always take it if he won't. My Behaviour didn't need Balancing so I had to sell my 2nd bottle on ebay. Might even be a MNSN who bought it off me at a bargain price :)

confusedatwitsend · 11/01/2012 13:07

Indigo, welldone to you both! You should be proud!

Do the Omega 3s help with memory please? Sorry if this has been dealt with already. My 7year old sometimes learns very fast and would apply what she has learned to other areas,so for example, when asked 3X4, she said almost straightaway 12 and said 'because that is 3 four times and that is 6 two times'. After a week, she looked at same sum utterly clueless. In the past, she'd done things like this too.

Not sure if all children do this and they just need reinforcing their 'skills' or this happens when they are tired or something?

Thank you
