Indigo's Proud Happy Thread

I am so excited / thrilled / happy!

DD (age 8 / Y4) has/had severe 'dyslexia'. The symptoms she has are:

  • Unable to learn to read
  • Unable to spell (Still gets 2 letter words wrong)
  • Slow processing
  • Huge memory problems
  • Word Finding difficulties
  • Auditory processing difficulties
  • Eye tracking / convergence problems

We have been doing lots of different therapies with her, and are slowly making progress on all fronts. At the moment she is on the cusp of learning to read.

However, she had such a breakthrough with her 'word finding problems' last night, I can't believe it.

Normally if I ask her what she did in Maths I get an answer like this:
'I don't know what we did, but on the whiteboard was a 1 and a line and a 4' (I assume she was doing fractions)
Or a few weeks ago she said 'I don't know what it's called, but it was a line with a dot and a dot' (She was talking about division)

Last night I asked what she did in maths, and she said:
'Fractions' I couldn't believe it (that she knew the word), so I said, 'What did you learn about fractions', and she said:
'They have a numerator at the top, and a denominator at the bottom'!!!!!!!!

Absolutely unbelievable. She's never, ever had language like that before.

The thing that has changed is 2 weeks ago we went to Tinsley House, and started the first stage of their treatment plan which is to follow the Brain Food Plan . (Which involves multi-vitamins, dietary changes, and exercises for the cerebellum)

Tinsley House said it would help with her word finding difficulties - but I never expected it to help so dramatically, and in only 2 weeks.

DS1 and DS2 are also following the same plan, and have also made amazing progress in 2 weeks - but I wanted this thread to be about DD :) Who has worried me the most these last 2 years.

That sounds amazing Smile. Well done to her and well done to you for sticking to finding her the right help.

OnTheBen10DaysofChristmas · 01/12/2011 15:32

Congratulations Indigo!

We are never going to improve anything with food or supplements as he refuses most things that aren't beige and crunchy and supplements are just like throwing £20 notes out of the window as he refuses them too - hypersensitive to taste Grin

So pleased it works for you though and that your children play ball :)

Thanks Imogen.

It's an amazing leap from a line and a dot and a dot to numerator and denominator :)

So, confession time, I don't actually give my kids the exact supplements that I recommend - I give them the ones I've been able to get them to take :)

Would your DS try any of the chewables? There's a lot of different multivitamins that taste like sweeties....

To get their zinc & magnesium I give them this or this (One prefers the liquid, the others prefers the chewables)

It is a very good supplement - only problem with it is it contains artificial sweeteners.

Then DS gets his Omega and multi-vitamins from this - which isn't nearly as good as the omega that I recommend. (The others take the recommended Omega - but they'll swallow a tablet)

So, I give them whatever I can get them to take, while trying to get as much Omega EPA, Zinc and Magnesium into them - and as little artificial sweeteners :)

You really do just have to buy a few till you find one he'll take. Otherwise you have to try and hide it in his food, which is a right pain.

O I have an issue with giving fish oil DHa/EPA to my 16month old. I want her to have the absolute max about of supplements to help her brain heal but I cannot get her to take the baby fish oil I bought. It stinks and tastes foul, she spits it out and then it stains her clothes and smells despite washing and washing them.

There is a research programme at the moment to look at the effect diet has in assisting the healing from birth brain injury, will be fascinating t know the answers!

Can I join in? Am a TA but had a little boy that I support who is in with me part time in reception sang twinkle twinkle all they way through the other day! he has very limited language but uses Makaton . I am so proud of him. He also said my name for the 1st time :)

Eveiebaby · 01/12/2011 21:41

Fabulous news Smile

nightcat · 01/12/2011 23:03

Indigo, that is great news, really pleased for you and your dc :)
My personal view is that complementary approach is actually aimed at improvement not just defining/diagnosing the problem.

wwbd · 01/12/2011 23:40

where can I buy behaviour balance capsules from? I've run out and can't remember where I got them from.

wwbd · 01/12/2011 23:40

well done Indigo BTW Smile

IndigoBell · 02/12/2011 06:20

Behaviour Balance

It certainly seems that a lot of our kids need a zinc and magnesium supplement. :)

That's brilliant news Indigo, so pleased for your DD.

DD2 has the DMG behaviour balance and EyeQ fish oils.

What effects do you see when Zinc/magnesium is given as well?

IndigoBell · 02/12/2011 14:09

Behaviour Balance has Zinc & Magnesium in it - less then I've been recommended, but I don't know how much is the 'right' amount. :)

I think the big thing for DD was the exercises - and cutting down on sugar Blush

As well as the multi-vitamins. Her brain is def working better now. :)

oodlesofdoodles · 02/12/2011 14:19

Well done indigo-ette. And well done indigo for trying out all these therapies and then telling us about them. Is tinsley exercises as per RRT?

IndigoBell · 02/12/2011 14:23

Tinsley Exercises are not RRT.

OP posts:
roundcornsilkvirgin · 02/12/2011 15:06

would you recommend the multi-vits alongside the behaviour balance or would that be too much?

IndigoBell · 02/12/2011 15:10

I'm really not the expert on vitamin supplements Blush

All I know is that you need many and lots Blush

So yes you probably need an Omega supplement, and a mult-vit supplement, and a zinc and magnesium supplement.

These are the exact ones Tinsley House recommends:

The reason he recommends the Omega is because it is the only one with no DHA in it. I think the reason he recommends the other 2 is because they don't contain artificial sweeteners.

(He's really against artificial sweeteners)

But, I'm not an expert on this.
