hi there
ds 7 is adhd, possible odd to.
yes i can see what your saying...i think they could have worded the title a little better!
although saying that,im really looking forward to seeing what the programme is really all about and how its going to put children with sn across,
im hoping that it will teach alot of people out there a few things,as i feel ds and us are judged, and ds never gets invited to parties round houses for play etc, because they think hes a bad boy!....
but yes.i agree, the title is not great!

NotOnUrNelly · 01/12/2011 05:27

can't find your AIBU thread -I'd have been interested to read more about your concerns - but I think that if the title gets people watching, it may be a good thing in the long run ...
The program title "Educating Essex" was clearly designed to draw in people who wanted to gawp at "chav school" - but in fact it was a pretty sympathetic portrayal of your average comp...I've been guilty of thinking that schools shold "crackdown" on trouble makers instead of "pandering" to them in the past - but EE made me see WHY schools can't just do this.

Also thanks for posting - I hadn't heard of the My Childs Not Perfect program - will definitely watch it

2old2beamum · 01/12/2011 13:41

.All our children are perfect but a little bit different. Yes I think it could have been worded a little more sensitively

ouryve · 01/12/2011 13:52

I would have called it "My child drives me up the wall" on certain days :o

Though seriously, I am curious about it, despite the emotive title. Hoping it does something to burst the DM bubble in respect of neurological disorders which impinge on children's behaviour.

lisad123 · 06/12/2011 14:50

Living somewhere like Bramhall with my boys would be my kind of hell :(

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 06/12/2011 21:32

I am fucking fuming that the mother of the lad with tourettes said she wished it was a brain tumour because then they could zap it and take it out.

I havent really been able to concentrate since then.

ouryve · 06/12/2011 21:51

I'm finding her more and more annoying as it goes on anyhow, MrsDV.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 06/12/2011 21:59

I feel so sorry for Catherine. She lives in the same area as I do.

She is 6 (so has been in school for atleast 2 years) and only just getting help from a speech therapist :(

unpa1dcar3r · 06/12/2011 22:18

Yes i thought that was a very stupid thing to say too about brain tumours.
Generally thought the programme was crap and didn't live up to my expectations in all honesty...
My mate just text me after- our kids all have Fragile X- and she said they should've shown kids like ours to get a better picture of LD etc.

Oh my god I cannot believe there lots of you getting annoyed by the name of this programme! Surely the most important thing is getting the message out there that these kids struggle. My daughter has asd, and my son possibly has asd and add, and to me they are PERFECT! If it gets people watching and understanding the difficulties these children have I'm all for it.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 06/12/2011 22:27

Thats what I mean zzzzz - so basic and yet she waited so long for it. We all know how much better it is for early intervention.

Smokedsalmonbagel · 06/12/2011 22:27

I agree with 69.

I got my family and friends to watch it to get a better understanding of selective mutusm which DS1 has. They only see the chatty side of him and find it hard to believe he has this.

The path of a child with selective mutism is a long one. There is no quick fix.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 06/12/2011 22:28

69funkygibbons Why not say that on the other thread? This isnt AIBU, we try and keep things a bit calmer round here.

Sorry new to this thought I was on that one I will copy and paste a lot if people are getting annoyed by the name thank you and sorry again.

coff33pot · 06/12/2011 22:53

I thought the programme was ok ish. At least for once it wasnt picking on parents giving their children meds and the old naughty child rubbish. They could have done more maybe quoted some statistics in high percentages of school behaviour in each county and perhaps a percentage of children STILL waiting in limbo for help. A bit more hit home stuff.

If they want to help then they could do more and make more programmes and emphasise that so many children slip through the net to getting help. Maybe go to each county, select a few more children from each one and continue to make programmes till each county is embarrassed enough to actually help children that REALLY need it.

The young boy was lovely his beautiful eyes said so much he wouldnt, I am so glad they finally got answers. And it annoyed me that the little girl was left so long when all she needed was a little therapy and look how far she went!

The older boy with Tourettes. His mother could have just simply said that she wished it was something that could be rectified by surgery but it cant. That would have been enough rather than wish a tumour. It didnt stand her in good light but I think I got what she was trying to say. He was great in that concert though and so his friends thought too Grin

sphil · 07/12/2011 07:59

I enjoyed the programme - is it a series? If so, I hope they show some children with SLD. Although I guess the angle is that many children have disabilities that arent easy to see on the surface, so SLD probably wouldnt fit the brief. Possibly this is the aim of the title - is it ironic, aimed at the tutters in the supermarket queues?

I too was shocked at the length of time it had taken to get the little girl speech therapy. You would think the school would have pushed for it earlier - or even tried some of those strategies themselves. I also thought it was clear that Adam had autism right from the start - it was his lack of comprehension that flagged it up for me.

lisad123 · 07/12/2011 09:06

Just watching this in sky+
Am I the only one that thinks its clear Adam is autistic?
