So a very expensive highly rated EP was booked for today but we had to cancel as ds had a rough night complaining of pins and needles in his leg and thus morning couldn't walk.

So A&E and given his relative non-complaining dx a sprain but x-ray just in case.

X-ray came up with two fractures in his knee and therefore a cast. They have no crutches in his size and no wheelchairs. I can hardly carry him to nursery and if I could I still can't do much lifting as 4 months pg.

I can't drive but am expected to get ds to fracture clinic for 9:20am 40 miles away with dd in tow and a no- walking ds who is almost 5 and impossible to carry far.

He has an OT appointment next week for the tribunal.

He has been attending social skills groups and doing brilliantly but without being mobile he won't be able to initiate and if we are ever lucky enough foe EP to have a space in her diary she won't get to see the terrific progress he's made on ABA.

We were supposed to be seeing the HT of new school tomorrow morning but had to cancel to spend forever trying to get to hospital.

Grrr

Just saw this and am really sorry to hear it...Sad You have my sympathies, hope someone can drive you there tomorrow...

insanityscratching · 17/11/2011 19:27

Ouch your poor boy. Any idea how he did it?

Really couldn't happen at a worse time.

Can you ask for hospital transport? Is that an option for fracture clinic?

StarlightMcKenzie · 17/11/2011 19:30

No round here hospital transport is only for elderly Hmm and certainly not for young siblings and doesn't do door to door but our local urgent care centre (25 minute walk away and no buses there).

It's okay. We'll manage somehow. Others probably on this board face these issues daily so just really having a whinge.

Slightly worried about SS too as no-one including him ( especially him due to ASS) could explain how it happened.

Oh no, poor little boy. Sad

Thank goodness they decided to xray. They didn't with my dd (then 20 months) this time last year and she had a broken wrist.

Why do these things always happen at the worst possible time as well - not that there's ever a right time of course.

I think insanity's idea is a good one. If he needs to be seen at fracture clinic and you can't get him there, they should be able to help - worth a phonecall to enquire anyway.

Hope you can get there and they're able to make him comfortable.

lisad123 · 17/11/2011 19:35

well if you need some help SLM, and im about, Im happy to come and get you :)

moosemama · 17/11/2011 19:38

Cross posted. Sounds like £££s for a taxi then.

Don't worry about SS, no-one batted an eyelid at a 20 month old old with a broken wrist and I worried myself grey thinking they were bound to think I'd done it. (She slid gracefully out of the rocking chair and landed with her arm twisted.)

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 17/11/2011 19:47

Bloody Hell! (((hugs))) for you both!

StarlightMcKenzie · 17/11/2011 19:58

No, the cost of a taxi would pretty much buy a wheelchair.

Thank you Lisad, but after whinging on here and getting some perspective I've got a plan. A local babysitter has agreed to try and come early to take care of dd whilst I stick ds in her buggy and attemp the looking bus journey. I just pray ds doesn't need the loo at any time.

oh star poor little man!

coff33pot · 17/11/2011 20:08

oh he will have a great time Grin

DS fractured his leg in two places (metal bike mowed into him head on) when he was 3. He was plastered in lovely blue up to his hip and thoroughly enjoyed everyone writing their names on his cast. They had no crutches for him either and he had to be wheeled in a pram. Because of his no sense of pain though he was soon clunking his leg after him up a climbing frame.

Just not good timing for you and very odd the nursery cant work it out. Mind you saying that DS never cried a tear and got up and walked off to the sand pit without a whimper.

DS broke his leg last year and was in a full cast, hospital wouldnt provide crutches or wheelchair either.
on the off chance i called into the towns mobility shop to see if i could buy a small wallking stick or crutches and found out (much to my suprize) they hired wheelchairs on a weekly basis. So we got one for seven weeks.
Maybe if you contact a local mobility shop they might do something similar.

appropriatelytrained · 17/11/2011 22:26

Sorry to hear about this Star, hope it's not too stressful for you.

starfishmummy · 17/11/2011 22:29

Oh your poor boy.
I hope your manage to get to the hospital wiothout too much hassle. Can you borrow a big puchchair for him??

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/11/2011 06:40

We had absolutely fantastic service at the hospital but the thing that gets my goat is that I heard and saw (I can lip read due to having been deaf a lot of my childhood) them discuss that they have run out of crutches.

However what they actually said to me was 'he's too little to be able to manage the coordination with crutches'.

Why lie and cover up the Creaking NHS?

If the had said to me 'you'll have to buy crutches if you want them, and teach him how to use then yourself' then at least I'd know there was an alternative to the ligament pain I get when carrying him.

He's a young boy. I can bet you that at some point in 6 weeks he'd figure it out, and if not there is always TAG teach/ABA.

What I haven't said on here is that we are off to Gran Canaria just before Christmas, just me and the kids. Airline days we need to pay for another seat too. It is just me and the kids and my preg belly -lol . Oh well at least one of them will be still now, if moany. Perhaps I'll get to sunbathe ( although the reason we are going is that it's all set up for the kids Inc sanddunes for them to run up and down Sad

Hi Star

Can you get your insurance to cover the cost of the extra seat?

He'll be able to crawl up the dunes maybe and then "surf" down them.

Hope you get some crutches sorted out soon.

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/11/2011 06:59

Perhaps re insurance although excess likely to make it not worth it.

Won't he get sand down his cast?

I'm really new to all this, but isn't mn great for getting you up to speed and helping solve problems?

I might even ask on the main board about wheelchairs just for the hol as perhaps someone has one lurking in their garage?

I can get a buggy I'm sure but his leg doesn't bend.

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego · 18/11/2011 07:20

You can get something like this for your holiday.

You might find that the fracture clinic has some crutches for him. I know that one person I know who had exactly the same issue used a pram with a board attached for his leg. You need to make sure that you book Special Assistance with the airline as they will get you quickly through immigration and to the gate in an electric buggy as the distances in the airports are so huge.

Ben10WasTheSpawnNowWeLoveLego · 18/11/2011 07:21

I love MN for being able to ask any question too :)

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 18/11/2011 08:13

oh no, poor ds, hope you get crutches and wheelchair sorted soon. Do you know anyone with a big 3 wheeler puschair you could borrow, dcs sit with legs much straighter in those.

StarlightMcKenzie · 19/11/2011 07:32

Hi all,

After a LONG day at the hospital yesterday and at least a billion tests they have concluded that there are no fractures, but the injury is still unexplained.

Some of the 'assessments' were of me since neither I, his dad or he could explain what happened. I am struggling with this a bit and trying to believe for the first time that these assessments are a good thing in order to rule out causes to find the real cause. I think I passed but who knows whether word will get back to the LA and they enjoy the opportunity to send out social workers in the run up to the tribunal.

The good news is that there will be no cast and that they believe he'll be able to walk again soon after the weekend. SOme of the options are not so great however i.e. arthritis, although this is unlikely apparently.

The most likely explanation is that a viral infection has caused it, but they have not found any signs of his body fighting. It is still under investigation and we are expected back at the hospital for more tests on Monday.

Despite the intrusive questions and the observations of our interactions I did feel that we were treated fantastically well and get this, the playworker actually LISTENED to me about how to get ds to cooperate with the various tests and didn't go off on her own tangent with unmotivating distractions with the belief that she knew better.
