I?ve been reading all these threads about our asd children some are different very different some are so similar so food for thought just wondering what food is trending? Like my ds give him chips any time of the day he will eat it! But recently his has larger variety pasta, curry, pizza, loves walkers cheese and onion crisps he has two packs at a time he's only 4! His gone off chocolates he still has buttons but gone of kinder egg! before it used to be pasta everyday or tantrums if he doesn?t get it but now he seems to be trying different food which is good news for me!, so i don?t have to cook three meals a day(dp non veg, me and dd veg, extra meal for ds).

We ought to do a thread, How many live garden snails complete with shell have your children eaten, or at least chewed! Grin

InfestationofLannisters · 29/07/2011 23:32

I'd contribute to a thread about erm, unusual things ingested...

nadia77 · 29/07/2011 23:35

WOW its funny how majority of our children who eat healthy eat really healthy but those who eat junk really only eat junk mine seems to yo yo between when he eats healthy he only wants healthy snacks mainly fruits sultans etc but unfortunately right now is walkers cheese and onion crisps at every opportunity! i am going to go shopping tomorrow well to the local supermarket nothing glamorous lol, and only buy loads of healthy snacks and fruit if there?s no crisps he can?t eat crisps what?s the that will happen? He can?t stand being hungry so he will have to eat! Wish me luck!

Ham sandwiches every day
Ice cream
Crisps
Pizza
Plus some more

Introducing new foods is very difficult.

Becaroooo · 30/07/2011 08:27

Ds1 eats:
pasta
rice
chips
cheese and tomato pizza
plain crisps
plain bicsuits
tomato soup
chicken fingers
fish fingers
flapjacks
Has never eaten chocolate/sweets and only drinks warm milk and water

Becaroooo · 30/07/2011 08:28

oh, and he has never eaten a piece of fruit (he is 8) and veg is a reall issue too Sad

nadia77 · 30/07/2011 10:41

wow becaroo can you not hide the veg in his food? like make your own pasta sauce with veg and blend it so there are no big pieces? like i make macarroni with butternut squash and no flour at all it tasts really nice compared to the normal recipe

you cant hide veg if like my son he only eats a dozen diff foods none of which even has a sauce its terrible he only likes brown / beige foods and low betide anyone of its slightly brown on the edges he only eats middle bits anyway discards more than he eats ( i put my list on earlier of foods he does eat ) none of which are healthy other than chicken (no brown or grey bits, skin or bone)

DS2 doesnt eat anything fatty at all or sweets not even chocolate , no meat so a bit underweight but its a plus she naturally loves all the right foods shes not mad on all veg but loves potatoes anyway you want to cook them except not chips her favorites sweetcorn , peppers , salad , red onion. if only the other two dcs ate so healthy

mrz · 30/07/2011 12:02

My son was referred to a dietician and put on an exclusion diet so we know that lots of the food he craves (ate in excess) are those that cause problems.
So no dairy or gluten or citrus - he would previously eat all the bread in the house and a family sized box of cornflakes if given the chance.

Now lots of broccoli, chicken, rice, carrots, peas, leeks ...

Becaroooo · 30/07/2011 12:04

nadia I wish!

I have spent many hours over the years making sauces/dishes with hidden veg.

He wont eat them.

He also gets very annoyed if the pizzas/pasta sauce arent the "normal" ones Sad

He will happily eat breaded/coated chicken and fish yet if he eats roast chicken or poached fish he gags and chokes so I give him what he will/can eat.

Leonie, I don't think people were trying to be smug. Remember, we all have DC with SN on this board, people are genuinely trying to be helpful.

Yes, I know what you mean. Like the Shock faces I get when I say DS2 at age 11 and in MS still soils himself daily.

Becaroooo · 30/07/2011 14:27

I know leonie

I dread going to my dh's aunts house (which we have to do every xmas eve or the world will end) she NEVER cooks anything my 2 will/can eat.

Would you consider smoked salmon, prawns, out of date cous cous, bread and salad a good meal for 2 young children (one of whom has sn)?

They only ate bread and ice cream the last time we went and she wasnt happy well cook something they will eat then, you mad old bint

Next time I am taking a pizza for ds1 and some mash and veg for ds2.

Sod her.

Becaroooo · 30/07/2011 14:33

oh, and I am allergic to shellfish and dont eat fish either - which she knows.

WhoWhoWhoWho · 30/07/2011 17:58

DS eats a mostly beige diet Hmm

potato waffles/smiles/ stars
chips
hard cheeses
crisps
smartprice noodles
hotdogs
plain cheese pizza with no herbs on top
sausages (as this is the only real meat he eats I buy the best)
bananas
apples
dried apricots
raw carrot sticks under duress
crackers
breads
plain fromage frais with no bits
some cereals (shreddies, corn flakes, rice crispies, etc)
muller corners with chocolate bits, no other flavours, no other brands
ketchup

he will not eat anything hot and wet, anything hot, anything with the slightest bit of seasoning gets screams of "MY MOUTH IS ON FIRE!"

WhoWhoWhoWho · 30/07/2011 18:11

Ooh I forgot the spreads:

jam
peanut butter (smooth not crunchy)
chocolate spread

drivemecrazy63 · 30/07/2011 19:08

how do you get them to eat any veg dc heaves / spits all veg out even chips... doesnt even like Mcdonald fries will eat the burger plain no sauce or onion no mustard just plain burger in a plain bap (no seeds) or the chicken nugets (not edges) but never ever veg or fruit he used to eat a couple bites banana but no more Sad veg cant be hiden besides hes 11 now couldnt con him with that at 3 and ive tried since older he doesnt like textures or colour he likes meat only for dinner isnt doing his heart any good

TotalChaos · 30/07/2011 21:39

nadia - often children who are really fussy are v. v. sensitive to any changes to smell/texture so that's why hiding veg in other food is unlikely to work.

becaroo - yes, my DS prefers coated chicken/fish too, think it must be something about predictability of texture...

hollysmam · 30/07/2011 22:08

Hi, my dd is not officially asd yet but we have our suspicions and waiting for dx.
She eats:
Bread, any kind esp nan and garlic (massive tantrums in Morrisons yesterday cos didnt understand that they had to be cooked first)
Chicken nuggets in breadcrumbs
Organix crisps or Pringles
Pasta with any sauce (this is part of daily diet as its the only thing we know she will def eat so try to hide veg in it as best we can :) )
Krispies, Cornflakes or Cheerios -dry no milk
Pizza
Rich Tea biscuits
Growing up Milk (advised by HV to carry on with this as her diet is so rubbish).

It s a bloody nightmare to keep her fed Angry

hollysmam · 30/07/2011 22:11

And were totally shocked yesterday when she stole a bit of ham from DH plate and atually ate it....
