Fish Oils

After much thought I have decided to try giving DS1 (3.7, ASC) fish oils.

I am not expecting anything but think it's just another thing I need to do!

Has anyone on here tried recently and how did you get your DC to take it? I have bought a citrus liquid one, which I gave him on a spoon with his lunch. I know next time is going to be a battle now he knows whats coming! I was wondering whether to mix it in yogurt but don't want to put him off yogurts. If it was one spoon a day I would manage it but it says for the first 12 weeks give 3 spoons so it is going to be a real challenge!

I pour a non flavoured one over fish or meat to disguise it's taste - because even the non flavoured ones taste fishy.

My DS takes the eye q supplement. I'm lucky as he likes the taste of them and looks forward to having them! I know he's probably unusual but they might become accustomed to the taste after a while?

DietcokeGirl · 19/03/2011 14:42

I have got the eye q citrus one. I may keep having a go at him taking it off the spoon but 3 times a day?! Indigo, which one are you using?

Have you found it to be any benefit?

DD (3) takes the eye Q chews. she didn't like them at first but got used to them after a week and now asks for it :o

before we used the chews, I tried liquid fish oil on a spoon (no way but I should have guessed that) and by mixing it into the food (DD wouldn't have that either).

for some reason though she is happy with the chews (though IMO they taste really foul as well).

we have been on them for 8 weeks now. haven't seen a very big difference. her speech improved a bit and she started with some phrases, whilst before it was only saying single words (DD has s&l delay) and she started using her potty (she wouldn't go near it before). but not sure if it is down to the oil. might be just natural progress.

blueShark · 19/03/2011 14:52

i actually did it in a medicine dispenser until he got used to the taste and now will take it from the spoon with no problem. The Haliborange (I think they were called) has very mild taste so try mixing the fish oils with little bit of Haliborange.

The benefits of fish oild we found to be amazing although like everything else didnt kick overnight and took good 3-4 weeks to start noticing the results in increased attention.

DietcokeGirl · 19/03/2011 15:22

I tried the Haliborange and he wouldn't go near it. He won't even eat sweets so the chews are out! I am not sure whether it the colour or the texture he doesn't like. He won't eat fruit (apart from banana) but will now eat any colour fruit tube going so that's progress and it's getting a load of fruit in him. I would have poured the liquid in the fruit tube but I have to squeeze it on a spoon so he would notice...grrr.

It sounds like there are some potential benefits (DS1 has S&l delay) so will keep going and see what works.

Appreciate your feedback. I know it is hard to say if it is the oils or natural progress.

I have friends who put the lemon flavoured liquid into yoghurt. it all tastes a bit fishy, so my guess its neither the colour nor the texture but the taste that puts them off!

Chundle · 19/03/2011 16:21

I used the Mini MorEPA ones more expensive but have higher doses of EPA and the other thing in them that makes them work dd was fine taking them

Spinkle · 19/03/2011 16:29

We use Eye Q liquid 'citrus' flavour.

I give a spoonful and immediately follow it up with a sweetie (yeah Hmm I know). It means I've trained DS (like a dog) to take it.

I cannot have him start refusing 'medicine' or life will be very difficult (he has faddy fussy food things)

EllenJane1 · 19/03/2011 16:29

Hi, we've been using the Eye Q oil for about 7 years. We started using the citrus oil, but he hated that. We disguised it in yoghurt but it spoilt the yoghurt. We now get him to take the capsules. To me, they are foul, but he chews 2 up quite happily at breakfast. They used to do a smooth paste in a sachet if nothing else works.

We saw one of those leaps in development about six weeks after he started taking it. Could have been them? We tried stopping them about 3 years ago as we weren't sure they did anything anymore, but saw an increase in tantrums soon after, so we went back on them. It's really hard to say if they actually do anything, but as he's happy to take them, why not? One of the things his DLA goes on. Smile

IndigoBell · 19/03/2011 17:46

We use Nature's Own

Def made a diff to DDs memory / alertness / concentration

And with DS we use orange flavoured boots one. It helps him (a bit) with anxiety / stress.

DietcokeGirl · 19/03/2011 18:14

I just tried again and as soon as he saw the spoon he started crying. DH and I tried but he was really distressed so had to give up. He now cuddling DH as he upset with me.

I have the Citrus one, couldn't find the sachets in the supermarket. I may try online.

Now I have heard some positive experiences I really feel like I need to try and get it down him. It is going to cost me a fortune until I get one he will take. I am going to try bribing with choc stars too, if it works Spinkle then it is worth it!

something that I was told recently is that after a while we should stop using the oils for the body to produce from its own storage of them (if I quoted the medical term for it properly). So give it 2 weeks off after 3 months and make a note of the difference if any.

happydayyay · 19/03/2011 22:11

I put the boots one in dd s cup of milky tea and she drinks it with no problem.
The good thing with the boots one is you only need a 2.5 dose per day so they cant taste it so much.
Good luck with your next atempt.

Not sure if it does any good only been using it three weeks now think it takes a while to notice any difference..

pigletmania · 19/03/2011 22:51

My dd started taking Eye Q Strawberry chews, and really I have not noticed much of a difference, I will probably move her onto another more cheaper supplement with cod liver oil. I aked dd Paedritrician this week if its worth her taking them, and he said no its just a gimmick, if it had such miraculous effects all the doctors would be prescribing it. They are a lot of money tbh and am going to use up what we have first.

DietcokeGirl · 19/03/2011 23:33

piglet - we asked the paediatrician about diet/supplements and got a similar response.

I feel I owe it to DS1 to give it a try and if it doesn't work then so be it (tho a costly trial). It would help massively if he would eat the chews but given I can't get a haribo anywhere near his mouth it is a lost cause!

So, will buy a selection and see how I get on!

Watch this space eh!

I am a bit Hmm when it says on the packet to give 6 a day for 3 months to build up their supply, just a marketing ploy to get you to buy more. DD been taking them for 2 months now, will look for cheaper omega 3 fish oil capsules me thinks.

pigletmania · 20/03/2011 00:46

Good luck DietCoke Smile

IndigoBell · 20/03/2011 06:22

There have been loads of studies which have had positive results.

But, as for everything, it will only help if your child is deficient in Omega oil. And really the easiest way to find out is to try it and see if you notice a diff.

If you don't notice a diff after 12 weeks, then your child wasn't deficient and you can stop using them.

Not every kid is deficient in Omega oils. But if they are these supplements will help. When these studies show positive results, they don't mean for every single kid in the study, they mean on average.

MRZ just quoted a study where a third (of 3000) students got better than expected GCSE results while on EyeQ. While it had no effect on the other two thirds.

DietcokeGirl · 20/03/2011 08:18

I will report back in 12 weeks then, tho it may take me that long to find one that he will take with some ease.

We have been giving DS2 the Haliborange liquid for just under 2 months now and have seen some difference. Not huge but definitely noticeable. We put the liquid in his orange juice that he has every morning at breakfast. As it's orange-flavoured, he doesn't even notice it's there.

DietcokeGirl · 20/03/2011 08:37

Triggles - what differences have you seen?
My DS1 won't drink juice - only water and milk. He doesn't do sweets either so can't use the chews.

Triggles · 20/03/2011 09:57

DietcokeGirl - it's more of an overall thing. He seems a bit more settled, less hyper, and seems to process things just a bit better. As I said, it's not a huuuge difference, but certainly noticeable (even the TA that does his 1:1 has noticed it at school), so for us we're happy to continue it. It did take about 3 weeks of daily doses before we began to notice any change.

DietcokeGirl · 20/03/2011 10:10

Thanks, I am off to buy vanilla one tomorrow. I tried the halibo in his yogurt, gave it him on sofa watching tv but he noticed first mouthful..! So, citrus is out and the mission continues.

Dietcoke girl - write to IQ and ask for samples!

I had this issue when DS was about 2 or 3. Equizen did send a variety of free samples. It was worth it for them as they aquired a loyal customer from me once I found the format he'd accept. I had to return a paper form stating which he'd prefered, had no probs with that as considered it fair considering they sent £40 worth of freebies!

We were told to get them by the hosp nutritionist, as I have to work at the fat content of DS's diet as he's been totally dairy-free since babyhood, (severe dairy intolerance, I had to be dairy-free to bf).
