Fish Oils

After much thought I have decided to try giving DS1 (3.7, ASC) fish oils.

I am not expecting anything but think it's just another thing I need to do!

Has anyone on here tried recently and how did you get your DC to take it? I have bought a citrus liquid one, which I gave him on a spoon with his lunch. I know next time is going to be a battle now he knows whats coming! I was wondering whether to mix it in yogurt but don't want to put him off yogurts. If it was one spoon a day I would manage it but it says for the first 12 weeks give 3 spoons so it is going to be a real challenge!

yes, generally DS2 is quick to notice ANY change in his food. We did have to put the liquid in his orange juice and in a cup with a cover (as it makes it look a bit milky, even though it's orange-flavoured), but he seems to drink it just fine. But orange juice is one of his "must-have"s for breakfast, so not sure he paused enough to notice Grin

I will go for the cheaper HailbOrange chews not the more expensive EyeQ chews when they run out

Triggles · 20/03/2011 16:46

Oh, also watch for sales. We got 3 bottles of the haliborange stuff on 3 for 2 price at Sainsburys. Lots of stores put that stuff on sale regularly!

will keep a look out for the offers then. may ask for some samples as recommended by bochead.

Its going to be hard going as he doesn't like the citrus tastes...will get there eventually (I hope). I don't blame him, I had to ask DH to taste them to see how vile they are!

Boots always seem to have 3 for 2

DS doesn't have special needs, but I give him fish oils to help with his eczema. They have made a real difference to his skin, it feels soft and pliable now, rather than sandpaper.

Oramge oil: www.zip£6.99 for 360mls

He did not like the fish oil on a spoon, but we worked on it. I kept it in the fridge, and poured it out just as he was about to have it. Spoonful of yogurt, spoonful of oil, spoonful of yogurt again.

We then moved to adult capsules:

1000mg capsules, 360 for £9.99.
I used to pierce one and put it on a spoon, there was less of it so he found it easier I think. He now chews them(!)

As I said the boots one is strawberry flavour and as he likes milk if you just add 2.5 to it they dont notice it.
My dd has a food phobia so if it works with her think you may get your ds to take itSmile

DietcokeGirl · 21/03/2011 21:54

oh thanks will have a look at the Boots ones again (didn't notice the strawberry when I looked!).

I did manage the halibo today using a medical dispenser. Had to do it morning and tea-time tho to get two spoonfuls in. I need a bigger dispenser to get the full dose down in one! It was a bit of a struggle but gave him a treat immediately so he soon forgot about it. I need to progress to a spoon/or in milk so will try strawberry and see if he will take it voluntarily.

Do you think they would be as effective if the chew ones are swallowed instead of chewed first?

My son doesn't like orange flavour and I bought a load of orange ones without realising you can get strawberry. He can swallow the chews happily though and I assume stomach acid would break through the gelatin outer the same was as it would for adult oil of primrose etc.
