Hi there

I have just been in to begin handover with my mat leave cover. In one of my secondary settings, they took a baseline of 20 curricular words at the beginning of term which they are working on with the Year 7's.

I want to PT these words now as I want to specfically focus on the fluency/repetitin aspect. However, my memory for PT is a bit shaky. I've had a look at the SAFMEDS stuff and the basic principle I get, but am not sure how to chart it as this asn't something I did back in the day. We used to simply fill in data sheets which senior staff charted so I am not sure what to do?

Any help gratefully received.

He is good mates with my mentor.
I have some good stories about him too. Grin

Fab, fab, fab idea. Bangor is a bit far for me. Do you think we could get someone at a central venue? I'm game to help with organising.

We need to set up a separate discussion group offline to discuss.
Anyone willing?

HI There, DD has GDD and is 3 I just wondered if it is too early to be learning about this.
It sounds brilliant.
I am currently bracing myself for the future and dealing with DD having learning difficulties. When I read this thread I got really excited.

DD has been to a specialist nursery for 2 months now and her progress has been amazing. The specialist teaching methods combined with therapy are really helping her already.

I signed up to join the group so hope thats ok. I don't post that often really but am genuine.
Many Thanks

MD - I want to start SAFMEDs on multiplication with DS and I was reading that maloney stuff that was referred to.

He was talking about 'see it say it' before moving on to 'think it say it'.

By my reckoning, following what he says on that site, this means that I would have to write out sum and answer on a card e.g. 2x5 =10, and then get DS to read as many as he can in a minute before moving on to him simply reading the question and then trying to get the answer himself.

Is this right?

A useful framework for all PT tasks is the Haughton Learning Matrix which loooks essentially at input/output.

So, reading aloud would be see/say
Respondiing to a written word with a sign would be see/sign and so and so on. My internet playing up a bit today but google Haughton Learning Matrix.

Yes,what you are saying makes sense and it is how I do it.
You can start with the entire thing on one side
eg 6x6=12
and time how fast he does it, then move ot putting answer on the back and he goes through, and provides what he thinks is the answer, turns over to check and if it's a learning opportunity, it goes on one pile and if correct, onto another. At the ned of the minute, count up the corrects and LOs and make a note. Gop through LOs again and when ready do another timing and watch the score climb.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks MD. Would you then mix up the cards so you have lots of different xtables to read out - I read somewhere you should have at least 60-80.

moondog · 22/11/2010 19:54

I start on a set at a time (eg 6x timetable) but if/when you get really good then you should be able to reel 'em off so a mixed pack a great idea.

If you rote learn the basics, your mind is freed up to tackle more interesting stuff instead of being bogged down working out what, with a bit of practice, could be at your fingertips.

Interesting how lots of older folk can do this no problem as back a few years ago, the value of rote learning was acknowledged.
SAFMEDS go one further in that you track progress and compete against noone but yourself (great for kids who are having difficulties or not so confident.)

dammitjannette · 22/11/2010 19:59

Thanks Moondog that is really helpful

moondog · 22/11/2010 20:02

Let me know how you get on eh?
