Coping With Autism
19/09/2005
This week we follow a day in the life of the Nicky Haugh, a 6 year old boy who has Autism.
More than half a million people in Britain have Autism and the numbers of diagnosed cases is rising rapidly. Autism is a lifelong disability that drastically affects a person's ability to communicate and relate to people around them.
Despite wide-ranging differences, everyone with autism has problems with social interaction, imagination and play. Nicky?s mother, Christine, describes the impact Autism has had on their family, and how she and her husband coped with Nicky?s challenging behaviour whilst managing to look after two other small children.
We learn about what help and support is available to Autistic children and their parents, and Christine enlightens us on the challenges and delights of living with Autism. We meet Vicky, Nicky?s speech and language therapist, and follow Nicky?s adventures at the local train station and supermarket!
We witness how Nicky has progressed from only being able to make one noise ?baa?, to now where he can happily play and communicate with his family and friends.
