Its getting so difficult to buy for him because his interests are so limited as well as his understanding and capabilities. He loves his trampoline, vtech alphabet desk, colour doodle drawing thing and likes building blocks and duplo. Also likes his toy piano but not as much as other things. We have tried sensory toys with varying success.

Any ideas?

No sensible ideas - only to remember that how much money you spend on him / presents you buy him at Xmas has no relation to how much you love him....

Bluesunbeam · 20/10/2010 13:28

My ds(6) loves his rainbow bells. They are colour coded and has been playing with them for 18 months!

Gets a bit noisy sometimes!

Other thing he likes is his vtech vsmile motion, we have to get the younger games but he is beginning to understand, slowly oh so slowly!

troutpout · 20/10/2010 13:34

swing?...ds (who also loves trampolining) just loved the feeling of a swinging (regrettably we've never had the room for our own swing)

ds also really liked clever cogs...they've been around for years... fab toy

wooden train set?

DeadlyNightShadeofViolet · 20/10/2010 13:48

I am getting my DS a piano mat from Hamleys (the only place I have found one) - like your DS he doesnt really have alot of interests, just jumping and noise :)

Marne · 20/10/2010 14:02

We are getting dd2 (4.8) a drum kit (bad idea i know) as she keeps making drums out of anything she can lay her hands on and loves music.

JustBeachy · 20/10/2010 14:11

Has he tried Moon Sand? DS really likes that. Or a bubble gun?

ouryve · 20/10/2010 14:13

We've ended up with just about ever phonics/numbers electronic toy there is for DS2, since he's so difficult to buy for.

Does your DS like sticklebricks? DS1 loves those. He's also a fan of his georello cogs kaleidogears) and still plays with them at almost 7.

staryeyed · 20/10/2010 14:50

Thanks for the suggestions.

we tried a train set last xmas - he has no interest in it at all. he liked a drum kit that his grandma bought for him but we dont have space to have one at our house. No interest in stickle bricks.

As for moon sand He does like tactile things but has a real problem with putting things in his mouth.

He might like clever cogs or the piano mat its so hit and miss its hard to know.

ds is getting moonsand and playdoh - he puts things in his mouth (especially playdoh) but Ive stopped worrying too much. We are also getting him washable felt pens, paper and some playmobil vehicles (he is 9)

In previous years I have bought things that seem such a good idea but that have been ignored. These days a lot of my shopping for him is searching out old DVD's and books that he loves and needs replacement copies of.

I will spend a fraction on ds compared to dd as most of my ideas get taken by friends and family but I don't worry - I have all year to buy replacements when they get broken Smile

childrenofthecornsilk · 20/10/2010 14:59

there is loads of lovely stuff in the lego shop
my ds liked mobilo and bionicles at that age as well. Also liked his marble run. These shrinkles always go down very well in our house.

bloodychocoholic · 20/10/2010 15:08

Would he be able to manage a scooter? My DS is nowhere near being able to use a bike but absolutely loves, and is really good at, his scooter.

Agree with marble run too.

Will watch this thread with interest for other ideas! Smile

staryeyed · 20/10/2010 15:28

Ds had a marble run which he loved but one day he decided he was scared of itConfused. we could try again.

Ds has learned to pedal and nearly steer his bike but he still fits his current one. We will replace for his birthday I think. Im not sure he will get the scooter concept.

My sis bought my ds a thing called 'Mosaics by Numbers'- they are magnetic from the Orb Factory (G9851). Aged 4 and up. Ds(asd) loved it.

You get a magnetic board, pick the picture you want to make up from the selection, the picture itself is made up of numbers and each number relates to a colour (all the magnetic foam cubes are in groups of colours).

It's brilliantly logical and ds thoroughly enjoys it.

After each picture has been made up (and there is a really good selection for both boys and girls) we have to take a picture on my mobile!!

I would recommend this.

troutpout · 20/10/2010 20:09

Does he like building things to knock down? ds has always had a bit of a thing for it
If so..

Indoor skittles

Boomblox on the wii is a great game for building and exploding if he can manage that sort of thing

woolytree · 20/10/2010 20:23

Piano mat try www.firebox.com/product/2650/Giant-Piano?via=ser

And my DD loves her bilbo...hard to say what it is but www.firebox.com/product/2229/Bilibo?via=ser she rocks, spins and hides things under it...very sturdy too.

woolytree · 20/10/2010 20:25

Or we also love her leapster 2 but theres a new one out on the leapfroog site...lots of talking alphabet etc...:)

5andahead · 20/10/2010 20:36

I can highly recommend this.

We bought it last year for DS3 but DS2 plays with it a ot more. The musical instruments spin aroun when you put them on the base and play the appropriate noises, lots of fun!

DS2 has a Vtech smile as well which he can use with great ease. I'm selling it though as he much prefers DS1's DSi.

Marne · 20/10/2010 21:10

The dd's have a Bilbo, we have had it for 18 months and it still gets played with most days.

We tried the piano mat out in toys r us at the weekend, i thought dd2 would love it but she stepped on it a couple of times and then didn't want to know, i would love one though Grin.
