glittery · 26/09/2010 21:35

another two Scotland only charities are bravehearts childrens trust and challenger childrens fund

SookieD · 26/09/2010 21:58

Thanks Glittery - hadn't come across that one before. Will look into those.

It does seem that Fife seems to be doing quite well.

I must confess we do also have a pre-5 education worker that works with DS. I don't really know what her official title is. She does an hour a week with DS basically just playing with him and will be working with the nursery about ensuring tasks there tie in with what Lachlan needs. She is great I have to say.

There are undoubtedly problems with things the council does - particularly lack of funding for things like groups, childcare, respite, adaptations etc. But, my biggest gripe about lack of services is on the health side - OT and SALT seem totally overstretched so all they really offer is 'consultancy' as opposed to regular therapy sessions. DS is supposed to be in OT priority group too. Think our health board (Forth Valley) pretty much making it up as they go along TBH.

ooh, forgot to say. You'll see I was going on about the fSDC campaign.

Here is (hopefully) link to latest newsletter:

I'm deeply skeptical about whether that link will work or not but if not you can sign up to receive it www.fsdc.org.uk

Particularly please note the call for parents to take part in diary project charting all difficulties accessing facilities/therapists etc.

shaz298 · 26/09/2010 22:30

Hi,

I signed up for the diary project. Just waiting for confirmation of what I've to do Grin x

glittery · 27/09/2010 08:20

ask F! Wink

MeganH · 27/09/2010 15:23

We're in Edinburgh - also had many fights along the way and about to embark on a new one as we feel our son's current school is oversupporting him and making him too passive.

mumoftrio · 29/09/2010 19:43

HI all

have had an interesting few days.

how are you all?

school think ds on spectrum, ed psych has had one visit so far.....

optician doesnt think so, just thinks he has very poor vision related delays (wears patches and strong glasses)

went to paediatrician and the movement and learning clinic and neither think he is on the spectrum, tho appara vision problems can present like aspergers a bit.........

sooooooooooooooooooo confusing eh!!!

we are trying to organise a Scottish meet up if anyones interested?
its looking like the big Dobbies up in Edinburgh next to Butterfly world, on a weekend morning although nothing confirmed as yet!

glittery · 06/01/2011 11:46

bump

GentleOtter · 06/01/2011 21:31

glittery, thank you for inviting me too although I would not be able to come at the weekends.

I wanted to add the Govan Law Centre - the best there is for Ed Law and also Mindroom

It is also worth reading 'The Velvet Bulldozer' by Sandy Row - she is in England but her experiences with LEA, Ed psych etc are all to familiar.

The Scottish system for trying to get the best for your child, or indeed any help for your child is Draconian at best and they really need to change the law as we are treated like criminals for daring to question the authority of the LEAs.

MommyUpNorth · 07/01/2011 09:43

Hello! I'm not sure I've posted on this Scottish chat thread before... I looked at it and meant to come back to say something, and of course got sidetracked and forgot to return!

I don't think I'll be 'local' to anyone here. We're way up on the north coast of Scotland. We have been traveling down to Cumbernauld every now and again as DS goes to a periodic placement at the Craighalbert Centre, but he is having his very last session there in a few weeks.

DS is 4 now, and is in nursery. He has a split placement... 3 days a week at the mainstream nursery and 2 days at the special needs nursery... at both he has full time 1-1 support.

DS has Kleefstra Syndrome, and he has 3 older siblings.

Not really sure what else to add, so I'll leave it at that, and hopefully will 'chat' with some of you soon. :)

glittery · 07/01/2011 09:57

hiya, not "seen" you on here for a while!

MommyUpNorth · 07/01/2011 11:15

Hi Glittery... I sort of dip in and out. When ds was first born/first diagnosed, I think I spent most of my life online looking for any info I could find... now real life seems to have taken over since staring the whole school scene.

Also it helps when they're all actually at school so that I can get some time on the pc! :) Praying that we don't have anymore snow closures on Monday as I think I've done enough kiddy activities to last a lifetime! :o

glittery · 07/01/2011 11:18

lol, yes school is good!! Grin
they are saying we are going to get snow this weekend down here so i'm hoping its not too heavy!

joooly · 07/01/2011 13:31

HI, Im in Stirling. Hi SookieD :)

glittery · 07/01/2011 13:58

did you get my message about the meet up?

Mitchell81 · 07/01/2011 16:16

hi thanks got your message. Would of been nice to meet up but don't think I will be travelling the 2 and 1/2 hour drive each way at the moment as I am 15 weeks pregnant and feeling sick and exhausted all the time.

SookieD · 07/01/2011 16:46

Good to see lots more folk out there.

Mommyupnorth, know it's tricky when things are in the central belt. How do you find Craighalbert? Ds is 3 and went to free group till he was 2 but then couldn't get funding. Haven't completely ruled it out but funding would be a battle.

Mitchell - just had my second baby 3 months ago so can appreciate it's tricky. Best wishes x

MommyUpNorth · 07/01/2011 22:02

Craighalbert has been very good, but we really have outgrown it now. DS started going just after he turned 1. They really pushed to get him sitting/rolling/standing/etc... but more recently they helped us set up Makaton and that has been the most beneficial thing for us (obviously not really what the centre is set up for!). We went on to get full funding when ds was out of the free sessions, so it has been a very good experience all around. Craighalbert also sent one of the ladies who worked with ds up to his mainstream nursery to talk about what they do with him and how to help him better up here. A very good service! :)

joooly · 09/01/2011 11:12

yes glittery, thankyou, would love to meet up if its at all possible. :)

presario · 09/01/2011 11:19

Hi I am in Sutherland and would love to chat other Scottish mums

tightrope · 09/01/2011 22:17

hi, am in argyll and would love to chat to other scottish mums too.

services here are pretty poor, and we have only made any inroads by noisily complaining.

i too get confused by the english education system, and would be keen to hear other scottish parents experiences.
