Thanks for starting up and well done for today! I only wish bribes would work for me but they just don't. Will watch with interest.

Spinkle · 26/07/2010 20:35

We're going for night time training. That's it. We've run out of nappies now...

mintyfresh · 26/07/2010 20:39

We started last weekend - this is the 3rd attempt. DD has been terrified of the potty/toilet until now. She's suddenly 'got it' with the wees this week. She's doing about a million wees a day but hey, she's finally sitting on the potty! Haven't even attempted a poo on it yet - one step at a time...

Good luck Marne and DD2

steph007 · 26/07/2010 20:51

great thread, great timing, I'm thinking of starting in a few weeks time (after our 6 hour drive to holiday!!!). My girl has so far refused to entertain any thoughts of sitting on the potty or the toilet, but tonight for the first time at bedtime she did sit on her potty for about 2 minutes while she played with Po! a miracle! not that anything came out, and tbh I was going to go straight for toilet and forget the potty idea... but any compliance is a good thing!!!
will be watching with interest

5inthebed · 26/07/2010 20:52

Not potty training, but wanted to wish you all the best of luck

dounutbrain · 26/07/2010 21:42

Yes going to start tommoro as we will be home most of the day. Dd will not sit on a potty without nappy on so dont know how its going to work.
Not looking forward to it.
Will be watching this thread every night.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL

BialystockandBloom · 26/07/2010 22:41

Marking my place...

Planning to attempt it for the fourth time this weekend with ds 3.3.

sumum · 26/07/2010 23:03

We are into week three with lo(4.2). wees not too bad, catching a fair few but poo don't ask. poo in pants not nice.

He knows when he is doing/has done a wee but not before so atm it's just pottying on regular basis. I do every hour at home, but at nursery they do every twenty mins!!.
No chance of leaving the house without a pull up yet though.

Marne · 27/07/2010 08:32

Good luck every one i hope you all have a succesful day, we are going nappyless this morning.

Great idea for a thread! Hoping DS will be in pants by September! This is our 3rd 10th 97th.....we've tried a few times already!

DS did a wee on the potty yesterday morning and yesterday evening!! Still in pull-ups for the time being as well, untill I see how he's doing this time. If he carries on like this he'll be in pants by the weekend!

(lots of bribery here though - we'll be ok till we run out of chocolate!!)

wasuup3000 · 27/07/2010 10:25

Major progress since last week. Have decorated the cloakroom toilet in Thomas items. He is now taking himself off at regular intervals and sitting in there!!!

Marne · 27/07/2010 10:45

We have tried quite a few times and failed, lets hope we can now crack it.

Dd2 has done 2 wee's in the potty this morning , i have left her nappy off, i'm to scared to try her in pants as last time we tried she just wet them and was happy to roll around and splash in the puddle.

I wish we had a down stairs toilet it would be so much easier, we are using a potty which could be a bad idea as we then need to get her to use a toilet.

Afternoon- it sounds like your ds is doing really well.

Wasuup- i love the idea of the thomas theme toilet .

Can't say that we've starting this summer but hello and a collective good luck.
DS (4.3, dx of ASD) pees in toilet, bushes, corners pretty much on demand but will only ask occasionally. If you can catch the moment, he will poo in toilet (like he did this morning), but will not tell and it doesn't bother him when he poos in pants.
So big problem right now is: how do I get him to say when he has to go? And (which might be more difficult) how do I hammer into the nursery teachers' heads that it's no good asking him (he'll always say no), but they have to take him on a regular basis?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/07/2010 10:53

We are getting nowhere..DD was peeing in potty every night like clockwork before her bath, we switched to a trainer toilet seat and she isn't too keen on it, didn't want her to become too attached to the potty though. Just waiting for her to start using the toilet regularly at night then will introuduce more toilet visits..

Marne · 27/07/2010 11:00

sc13- i think thats the problem with most ASD children. We have tried using PECS cards on keyrings but shes not interested. If i aske her if she wants a wee she will say yes (even if she doesn't need to go), i think its a case of taking them every hour and then they get used to the routine and train there blader to go every hour rather then going when they need to.

Fanjo- dd1 wouldn't use the toilet until she was almost 5 but would use a large potty or a plastic toilet seat (only at home).

I know, I know, Marne. I figure, he's learnt a lot in terms of communication, he'll learn this eventually.
I'm actually more stressed about the nursery - why doesn't it sink in that they have to take him at regular intervals? Is it really more convenient for them to change his clothes every time?

Marne · 27/07/2010 11:23

Dd's nursery's were the same, even the sn nursery wouldn't do what i asked them. I asked them to sit her on the toilet at regular intervals but they only took her once in 3 hours and by then she's wet . I'm worried that her school will be the same when she starts in september, they are prepared to change her but not to help out with toilet training, i feel if i don't train her before september then she will never be dry.

Oh well Success has its failures!!

""I am going to wee my pants mummy"" says He, before I had a chance
to say lets go to the toilet quick he pulls his penis out and wees all over my
feet!!

Marne · 27/07/2010 15:27

Dd2 has just had her first accident and peed all over the floor. We have managed 5 wee's on the potty though.

Wasuup- at least he knows when he needs to go .

sympathetic LOL wasuup...I guess that's progress of a sort! tbh I would be thrilled if ds showed any sign of being conscious of pee in any fashion.

I do like the idea of themed bathroom...because a big issue with ds is that he does not want to interrupt his train of thought to go to bathroom (and is big for his age 3.9 so does not fit comfortably on potty). It is my parents' house so will have to get them on board with decor But if I could put transfers around it that would tie in with the various themes he's into it would work.

I am also wondering about getting him to go every hour as his rhythm is very irregular. Is there some kind of timing device that you can programme to go off every hour? It would be a big struggle but ultimately easier than dragging him to the loo on an ad hoc basis.

sc13, am at your ds's nursery, as the head of local school said to me, it is an inclusion issue and I would just keep on at them nicely e.g. "Can we have another chat about strategies to get ds to go AT REGULAR INTERVALS, please? I think we need to take him more often..." Then keep asking them brightly how the new plan is going every time you see them and tell them how much you appreciate their taking the trouble to follow it as it is so important to support what you are doing at home, ISN'T IT?

I've got a question about lactulose - how much is safe? ds seems to need LOADS for it to work and he won't swallow it straight so I have to sneak it into his night-time porridge. Problem is the only regular time he poos is late at night when he is supposed to be sleeping. I know it is slow-acting but would giving it to him at a different time affect this? and would he go for having porridge in the morning instead? (actually he would probably have porridge for breakfast and dinner every day but that might be the final nail in the coffin of my quest for a balanced diet).

am running on I know, it's just such a relief (so to speak) to be able to talk about this with fellow sufferers!

Twowillbefine · 27/07/2010 22:08

Will also keep an eye on this thread. I want to get DS (3.8) sorted before he starts nursery full time in Sept. I know he can hold it, is perfectly able to be nappyless for a couple of hours. Also knows when he wants to go as starts getting agitated. When asked "do you want a wee?" has even nodded and gone into bathroom with me..... But WILL NOT wee on the toilet. Gets more and more frantic, pointing at nappies etc. So I reckon a small success in that he will ask for his nappy when he wants to go, but a bit lost in knowing how to encourage him to go on the toilet itself. Arrrggghhhh!!!!

dounutbrain · 27/07/2010 22:18

Well done.
I feel bad now as I put off potty training for another day
Been to lbrary to get some books to read to dd hoping she will understand what she is suppossed to do tommoro
She listens but doesnt want to sit on a potty.
I must try again tommoro wish I could bribe her with sweets but she couldnt care less about food.
Oh well see what tommoro brings, got 6 weeeks till back to nursery

Marne · 28/07/2010 08:18

ByWhoose- there is a timing device that someone mentioned a while back (a king of alarm that both the parent and child wears), i will have a look and see if i can find a link.
