When/if we move house i am thinking of having dd2's room as a sensory room, so it will be her bedroom but also a sensory room, i don't want it to be to busy (as she needs to be able to sleep in there), i was thinking maybe a bubble tube (if i can save enough money) and some tactile objects. We saw (well dd2 found) some great cushions in Next last week (she spent almost an hour touching them this fluffy one and this so i thought maybe a few cushions and a bean bag.

What sensory items do your dc's have in their rooms? i need some insperation .

i did my ds's room very sensory, he has a bubble tube from argos was not expensive, a light from ikea that shines moons etc everywhere though not sure if they till do them as he has had it a while now, lava lamp, glitter lamp, various rugs and cushions, a wobble cushion, led lamps that do swirly hurricane type things, a windchime, a big duplo board - he loves the feel of it!! a tent to sit in when he needs a bit of time out and i cant think what else. he also has a sensory box with various stretchy jelly type things, a pin thingy (you know which you put hand in and it makes pins shape of hand dunno what they are called), spinning led things, spinning tops, a brush, those crinkly foil blanket things, a vibrating snake, a vibrating teddy type thing, stres ball type toys etc and now my minds blank, will go look later and see what else he has!!

There are some fabulous fibre optic lights in ikea and very reasonably priced.

Marne · 23/07/2010 19:22

Just looking at the bubble lamp from argos, are they heavy enough not to be tipped over? (dd2 is quite distructive), we have a light display thing from argos which is great but we cant really use it until she gets her own room. I like the idea of the pin board and she would love a duplo board. I can't wait to get a bigger house, she really needs a space of her own (to wind down in). Your Ds's room sounds great.

ds has a mid sleeper and underneath is a sensory zone for him. I have tented it out with lots of fabrics and texture and a big bean bag - found homebase very good. He also has lights, a vibrating cushion and acrylic mirror. It hasn't cost a lot but he likes it.

othermother · 23/07/2010 20:06

Do you have a local freecycle/freegle group? I put a wanted ad on there and got a massive bubble tube (it hasn't fallen over yet!),2 lava lamps and a glitter lamp. I've also recently bought him an exercise ball which he loves, and he has a medicine ball too. His OT is getting him a wobble cushion.
I made a very heavy sleeping bag for him too which he likes to snuggle up in...it's made from a very large old velvet curtain, folded and then stitched, so it has 4 layers of velvet each side. It's a combination of the weight and the feel of the velvet that he likes.

I like this, has anyone got one? do you think they are easy to fit?

Thank you all for your great ideas xx

Ds's have to share a bedroom ( until house is finished).. But we have an area for him..
In ikea there is a fabric hanging seat which is fabby.. Got fluffy cushions and fleecy throws ( he happens to love those) and a sensory bag of things from Hawkins bazaar.. Stretchy pokey whizzy things.. And a gadget thing that you screw two pop bottles in each end and fill with water .. When you turn it about it creates a whirlpool .. He can watch it for ages.. And it feels nice to hold.
Also sand timers are great to watch.. And kalidoscopes.
He has wireless headphones for the cd/mp3 doofer and we have a selection of audio stories, calm noises, and he happens to like classical music... But basically he can shut himself in his hanging pod thing with head phones on.

Oooh I like that hanging chair Marne. Shame that Ikea don't deliver that item cos I bet my ds would love one!
At a guess I'd say you'd have to have it hoowed up to a bolted thing through a ceiling joist.

Marne · 23/07/2010 20:16

They do look great, i think dd2 would want to sleep in it . She loves music so a cd player would be good, can you get ones that attach to the wall (flat ones) so she cat reach it, she loves music.

Marne that's the hanging pod thing we have... It's great!

I didn't buy the inner fusion bit for it as ds is as big as me.. So we just put pillows in the bottom to give him more room.. You need to buy the ceiling fixings for it.. We have put Drings that are bolted through the ceiling beam in the loft... He weighs six stone and is over five foot and it is fine

TheArsenicCupCake · 23/07/2010 20:19

Cushion* not fusion

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 23/07/2010 20:19

check on ebay, someone might have one to sell that they are willing to send

othermother · 23/07/2010 20:20

I've just had a look on ebay but none on there

BUT they do have the ikea egg chairs...anyone know what age they'd be suitable for?

TheArsenicCupCake · 23/07/2010 20:21

Marne.. I'm not going to ikea till the end of the holidays.. But I'll happily pick one up for you then.

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 23/07/2010 20:23

my 7 year old has an egg chair, they love it

Marne · 23/07/2010 20:28

Thanks Cupcake, i will talk to DH and see what he thinks, she would love one. I saw a egg chair at a boot sale a few weeks ago but the hood was grubby (got damp), it didn't look very big but big enough for a 5-6 year old (maybe a small 7 year old).

TheArsenicCupCake · 23/07/2010 20:32

No problem.. Just put a shout out for me if you want me to pick one up for you

Marne · 23/07/2010 20:34

Thank you so much xx

Ikea dont have online shopping. They deliver if you buy in the shop. Maybe someone can get it for you and post?
cgi.ebay.co.uk/SENSORY-SPECIAL-NEEDS-GLOW-DARK-POSTER-/120364324752?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Toys_Creative EducationalRL&hash=item1c0645d790 is another idea.

Davros · 29/07/2010 09:22

Can someone point me to the bubble lamp at Argos? I have looked but I'm not sure which one people on this thread mean. We are decorating DS's room and I'd like a few sensory things in there. He is going to be 15 in a couple of weeks btw! He has a "proper" rocking chair which I got him one Xmas and he loves, a couple of Swiss balls, plasma ball but not much else. Any more ideas welcome.

Marne · 29/07/2010 12:51

BUBBLE LAMP, Read the reviews, its intresting to see how many people use these for their sn children, so much cheeper then the real thing.

I like this for an older child, i would love one in my room .

We fixed the bubble tube to the wall with drain pipe down spout brackets.
