I don;t even know why they bothered giving DS2 a school report. He needs help in everything (except ICT which he got excellent ) and the report simply highlights it even more. I know he can't write or read and that he isn't experienced in maths.

I could cry reading it. Compared to DS1's who has excellent in everything (except dance) it makes a horribl read.

The only nice thing is his teachers comments about going to miss DS2's positive attitude.

Anyone else hate report day?

On a plus note, he is going to be in the same class as all his friends.

Okay this is going to sound a bit mad.. But I actually hate the copy paste positive upbeat comments in the subjects to the bit.

I would much rather an honest opinion.

Saying ds2 has grasped the concept of spelling, doesn't help when I damn well know at nearly 12 years of age he has the spelling ability of half his age on a good day!

Luckily I do actually know the levels he is at.. But if I was a parent that wasn't constantly talking to school and EPs and CPs etc I could read the report thinking he was doing fine and dandy!

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 19:30

My (very badly worded) point. I have IEP's, termly meeting and appraisals so I know how he is doing. I really don't want to read another piece of paper telling me what he isn't capable of.

On DS2's report it claims "he is on the cusp of reading and writing"

Makes me want to cry with frustration and sadness. Pity it's a school night or I'd be on the wine.

Yep-with you all the way...its like everything you DONT want to hear about your DC in black and white...am also surrounded by yummy mummies who wax lyrical about their genius/socially competent/emotionally SO mature/sports star children until I want to turn into the exocist and make my head spin 360 degrees....but on the comment sheet I just wrote how incredibly proud I am of DS for frankly making it through to the end of the year because his struggle has been so much harder than others...thanks for the thread though...makes you feel less isolated!

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 20:26

I didn't go to sports day for that reason Oddgirl. DS2 has two runs, humming bird and Phoebe off Friends. As much as I find it funny, I'd hate to sit there and listen to other parents comment on it.

Ohhh I love the ' being on the cusp of reading'

well there's a bloody useful comment!

That's almost as good at getting a grasp of something.

Why not something like ' little johnny still finds X difficult and can struggle. However his determination and attitude with the subject has been outstanding.'

you know actually aknowledging where are dc's try really flipping hard.

For those parents who don't get the meetings us on the SN board tend to get.. It would at least be more truthful and maybe helpful.

Have to say well done on the Ict bit... That could be the key for him you know.

wigglybeezer · 15/07/2010 20:35

I have often cried on report day, didn't this year, must be getting a bit tougher at last! Thank goodness for DS2's Cello report, where he got a good for everything.

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 20:36

I know! It's just trying to get the school to understand it! He can type his name on the keyboard yet can't even hold a pencil properly to write it. He amazes me sometimes, he is really good with computers and yet he is only 4.

Well done to your DS2 WB!

I have to laugh at the pheobe link... That can't be your ds.. Because it's MINE!

Just shown dh.. He giggled!
Bless

can you get the IEP changed to allow laptop useage?

Ours states that ds2 should be encouraged to use a laptop where appropriate. I went out and got him one.
But I believe the laptop grant thing is still open to those children with SN... Might be worth looking at.

MotherJack · 15/07/2010 20:43

Oddgirl - thanks for the tip on what to write on the comments sheet. Think I may copy it direct in fact ;-)

Know exactly what you mean 5inthebed. Although I am really pleased DS's teacher acknowledged what an uphill struggle it had been for DS and how proud she was of him still coming in to school every day to try his best. All slightly patronising and very meaningless, nonetheless, as he only goes to school because I have to make him.

IT seemed such a hollow report, knowing what I know from out of hours conversations.

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 20:47

Laptop grant? Tell me more! I will get him one if he is allowed to use one at school. We intend to get him a computer for home by applying for a Cerbera grant, but he has to be 5 for that, which he is next month.

OP posts:
TheArsenicCupCake · 15/07/2010 20:47

Ohh , didn't mean to be showy ' I went out and got him one' ... I went out and got one because I wasn't having the school say anything about lack of laptops blah blah he has to share or only get x amount of time on it etc.. So I just thought I'd solve that issue before it arose!

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 20:49

Not showy offy at all. I shall ask his 1:1 tomorrow as she suggested that a few weeks ago during his appraisal but nothing more said.

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 20:56

Ah, DS2 needs to be in Y3 and he is only in reception. Thanks though, I'll keep that in mind for when he is old enough.

TheArsenicCupCake · 15/07/2010 21:08

Sorry hoped it might have helped.

While your browsing about... I got ds2 laptop from cashconvertors online shop as an instant buy.. Was a lot lot cheaper than grabbing a new one and it won't be the end of the world if something nasty happens to it.

It was a year old with vista, manuals, case for under £200.. Still going strong a year on.

Well worth a look on there

IndigoBell · 15/07/2010 21:20

I also had 2 rubbish / upsetting reports.

Was upset last week - but am back in fight mode this week

I damn well will help my kids to succeed and be happy.

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 21:21

Well if we get a computer through Cerbera he can have my laptop, no harm done there really.

Will remember cash converters though.

bdaonion, they start it all in reception. It is mainly play based but there is still that bit of learning. The school my DSs attend has quite expectations from nursery upwards, annoying at times but it's a good school.

5inthebed · 15/07/2010 21:30

Troublewithtalk. Maybe the teacher can't actually speak spanish and thinks your DS is fluent in it?

Thats amazing then TWT. DS2 has only just managed English, couldn't imagine him taking on another language.

And you're right, they work twice as hard as anyone else just doing what they do.
