Hi, I'm new to here so please bare with me. So my 4 yo son is diagnosed asd. Highly suspected adhd. He's currently in a morning nursery with one to two support. He's due to start reception in September. He's also under the outreach team from the special Ed school and under SALT. He's non verbal. The school have said he's not going to need more support than the school can provide and we need to start the statementing process.

Basically I'm clueless as to what I need to put in the application letter. I've done a rough draft of one but don't know if I've used enough detail. I can't afford to have to appeal it as it takes 26 weeks without an appeal and he needs this in place for September. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'll try an attach the letter I've wrote if I can work out how to do it 🙈

  1. Look on your Council's Local Offer page
  2. Look at IPSEA www.ipsea.org.uk/making-a-request-for-an-ehc-needs-assessment
  3. Most importantly...talk to your child's current nursery. Where do they have to support above and beyond an average child? If it is a feeder for the Infant school they will know the school staff and their attitudes towards SEN pupils.
  4. Ask at the new school where they feel he is going to need additional support. Are they/have they supported a child with similar needs before? Do they have the expertise? There is little point in my experience of having an EHCP in place when the staff are not able to implement what it states. Very often TA support is undertaken by staff with minimal training. A GCSE in English and Maths is usually the only requirement with little or no on the job training.
  5. Start looking around now at alternative provision that might be more suited to your son.
  6. Good luck. Stay positive. Don't back down! Know what you need and why you are asking for it. Your child needs you to educate yourself on your rights.

He was literally diagnosed with ADHD yesterday and put on melatonin too.

The current school he's is is very very experienced with additional needs, his one to one is out of this world fantastic with him but even with the support in place they strongly feel next full time will be more than he or they can cope with. This is what I have wrote so far, it needs tweaking in a few places but if anybody has any suggestions of how to word it better that would be great. Bare in mind I'm in Wales too so not sure how differently the system works to England xx

No advice, sorry, but are you certain you want to give the full name of your child on a public forum like this?

I suggest you replace the attached photo of the draft letter with one without his name. I have also reported the post in case MN want to take it down proactively.

Good luck!

Hi OP

Just to let you know, we've removed the photos because they contained RL names. If you'd like to repost the photos with this information covered, please do. Flowers

I'm confused, if you have all these people already involved, then why are you applying for the ECHP ?
Surely the Nursery SENCo, and the Outreach Team would take the lead on an application?
