Is it too hot for a sling?

DD velcro baby @7weeks. Don't think she'd go in pushchair even if we had one - is it cruel/wrong/dangerous to sling her in this weather?

no it isn't cruel. dress her in light clothing, are you wrapping her? There are light wraps and shorter wraps which are good. It offers sun protection too without sunscreen. A hazard when little limbs are bare.

What type of sling are you using?

Look at links for Kangaroo carry for wrap slings. these are ideal for tiny babies and use shorter wraps and only 1 layer of fabric on the baby.

You can also put her in a solarweave connecta, ringsling or meitai.

I'm using an Ergo with the insert. We both get pretty hot and sweaty but dd doesn't seem to mind.

no, it isn't cruel. think of all those African babies tucked up nicely in slings!!
I had a summer baby and used the sling a LOT.

i was going to post that on your other thread, but will do it here instead :-)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/06/2010 16:38

I have tried a wrap but neither of us seem to particularly like it..

if you were looking at getting something else for summer how about either a gauze wrap or a thin cotton pouch?

So if I got the Connecta (top of my list at the moment) I think baby would have her legs out with the crotch bit of the carrier cinched in (as per the instructions). She is pretty big and her legs don't naturally go froggy anymore. Given that this is all about not being too hot what is the best way to protect her legs from the sun given that she is too young for sunscreen?

ooh i have an old style cwtshi for sale if you're interested?
£20 delivered?
i used to tuck a muslin into the sling somewhere so that it covered baby up

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/06/2010 19:02

cwtshi?

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 23/06/2010 19:10

can't get their site to work atm, cwtshi.com but it's a mei tai

thisisyesterday · 23/06/2010 19:10

it's identical to this

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/06/2010 19:16

I thought it was some sort of acronym! I really don't fancy a sling you have to tie though...

Is the cwtshi still available? I would be interested if nobody else has bought it. What colour does it reverse to?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/06/2010 20:20

Just ordered a Connecta Solarweave. My DP is despairing... me bad

OP posts:

ItsAllGoingToBeFine, I can definitely recommend the Connecta Solarweave for this weather. I was in despair this week as it was far too hot for my stretchy Close carrier, until the Solarweave arrived yesterday.

My DS, now 6 months is very much a sling baby. We use it for baby calming as much as for transportation. When I got the first sling at 8 weeks, DH was very reluctant to get one, even at a bargainous price (he thought it'd be a waste of money). 4 months later he was as keen as me to buy a Solarweave - at full price too. Life without a good sling wouldn't be worth living in this house!

I bought a pair of linen trousers from Oxfam to keep the sun off DS's legs while in the sling.

otchayaniye · 30/06/2010 15:18

I had my baby in Singapore and had her in Moby (a bit too hot for me) then a Calin Bleu gauze every day for several hours at a time and it was fine for 8 months, until we moved back to UK. I still don't have a pram and sling her here in hot weather.

Calin Bleu gauze is excellent and light and has great grip to get a really good front or back carry.

One thing, sometimes her skin on her cheek could get a rash if it rested on my chest so I'd pop half a muslin there.

AngelDog · 30/06/2010 22:11

Ah, otchayaniye, that's useful to know as DS has a bit of a rash today on his face, and he was in the sling for quite a while. Thanks!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 02/07/2010 14:55

Yep, been using the Calin Bleu gauze in temps in the 30s here in Spain and it's fine. Muslin to cover feet, wide-brimmed hat and another muslin rolled up to form a pillow in the top part of the wrap behind her head. DD finds it very comfy and often nods off in it. Mind you, I'm interested in a Connecta too because I don't know if I'll get up the confidence to try back carries in the wrap on my own...
