Woven slings?

Have used a kari-me from birth with ds and he loves it - still likes the facing in hold at 6.5 mo when he's tired, but it's not holding him terribly securely if I try to tie him onto my hip, say. So I think I may need to change - should I get a woven sling or something like a mei-tai? What are pros and cons?

hello again habbibu!

i think if you want something really versatile i;d go with the woven wrap, that way you can do front or back carries and hip carries

you can't do a hip carry with a mei tai

actally, i would get both
my most-used sling is a storchenwiege, my seond most-used is a toddlerhawk

if you do go for the wrap i'd suggest seeing if you can get a second-hand one, simply because then you won't need to break it in. I was put off with the storch for a long time because i couldn't tie it easily or get it tight enough and it was ages before it got soft enough to use easily.
use it most days now though

Habbibu · 24/04/2010 21:50

Oh thank you! Does your dc sit snug in a hip carry with the storch? Think ds would like hip carry - I don't really like front facing out, and don't want to do back carries just yet.

i'v never tried a hip carry actually, normally have him either front facing in, or on my back

i'll give it a go tomorrow and report back!

Habbibu · 24/04/2010 22:07

hmm - can't find any second hand atm. How do you break it in? Lots of wshes or lots of use?

if you are interested in a second hand one, I have a Didymos Elise for sale. It is a sz 6, the most used size fits up to a sz 20 dress size I think in a FWCC - the front carry that takes up the most metre-age.

thisisyesterday · 24/04/2010 22:17

yeah wash it lots, sit on it while you're watching tv, scrunch it all up a lot, tie it in knots

foxytocin · 24/04/2010 22:18

my elise is already soft.

boogeek · 24/04/2010 22:21

My favourite for a hip carry is a ring sling - I have a maya wrap. Mei tais for backs, rings for hips, wraps for fronts

thisisyesterday · 24/04/2010 22:23

i could never get on with ring slings, always seem to put too much weight on one shoulder

but maybe i never found the right one???

boogeek · 24/04/2010 22:26

I only like it for short times and side carries - I keep one in the back of the car and it is perfect for popping into a shop or something as it is so easy to put on and off. Agree aboiut weight on one shoulder being non-ideal, but if you are doing a hip carry you are already distorted iyswim.

thisisyesterday · 24/04/2010 22:28

yeah, that's why i tend to stick to front or back

i do have a pouch that i use occasionally for dashing in to get ds1 from school, but even that knackers my shoulder

boogeek · 24/04/2010 22:35

My maya wrap is very thickly woven - like didymos fabric - so perhaps that helps. I do find it hurts if I sling it on (ha ha see what i did there) and don't pull it tight enough, so she dangles: she needs pulling right in tight against my body. I can wear it maybe half an hour without feeling uncomfortable (long enough for even our PO queue!)

Habbibu · 24/04/2010 22:36

Ooh - how much, foxy?

OP posts:
foxytocin · 25/04/2010 06:35

i'd like £55 including postage. It is hardly used and bought new by me in late 08. It is hardly used because I have a lot of slings and I am currently thinning out the ones that I am not using often a dd2 is now 19 mos and i am not having anymore babies.

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 08:01

I have carried DD's in a hip carry with a MT but you need one with wide straps to cup the shoulder.
Agree that a woven wrap can do everything though. If you are okay at front cross carries a hip carry is dead easy, just centre the 'sitting' cross on your hip and the crossover for tying on your shoulder.
Also, as they get older and can support their heads better a short wrap, a 2m or 3m one, which could hip carry or rucksack carry is much easier for out and about (just to add more to the mix)

Habbibu · 25/04/2010 08:17

you're on, foxy. Can you email me at myusername at gmail.com, and we can sort out details. Many thanks!

Argh. You're all working for the sling industry - it's a conspiracy. ds is good at holding his head, but likes a front carry still.

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 08:25

it's a nightmare, the more you buy, the more you want!
Once they can walk I found a MT or short wrap easier and sold off most of my long wraps so you have plenty of time!

For any lurkers don't forget to join the Yahoo UK babywearing swap group, lots of cheap second hand wraps and slings on there and the bonus of 2nd hand means they are already broken in and soft!

Habbibu · 25/04/2010 08:33

how do I find that, JB? And yes, I could google...

OP posts:
JackBauer · 25/04/2010 08:45

sigh

foxytocin · 25/04/2010 09:17

a front carry is excellent as even toddlers still like it. I had dd2 in it yesterday while out shopping in John Lewis. She is 23lbs and I can still comfortably carry her on my front.

I do back carries around the house especially when I am making breakfast or tea and she is underfoot.

Habbibu · 25/04/2010 09:23

Thanking you kindly, Mr Jack.

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 11:11

Don't thank me, you will end up with so many carriers....

I carry DD2 on my front when she is sleepy, she is 29lbs and 2.6. And I can still carry DD1 on my back and she is 4.3 and weighs40l at least (although not for long!)

Habbibu · 25/04/2010 12:52

Right back atcha, foxy.
