Carrier for large 6 month old.

Okay, so I had a carrier to use when DS was born but he was too small for it, put it in the cupboard, forgot about it and went to use it the other day and he's way too big for it. :( So, I now need a new carrier.

Any suggestions? Extra info, I have various health problems so need one that will distribute the weight well.

Do you want something with straps, or a wrap sling that you tie? And if straps, do you want buckles or tie straps?

Also, how large is large, and do you want to carry him on your front or back?

Sorry, that was a whole load of questions, but its worth working out exactly what's right as they can be expensive Smile

SchrodingersMew · 08/04/2012 13:52

See, I'm not sure, much a newbie to wraps and carriers but I love the look and the closeness of soft wraps but unsure how hard they are to use.

Large as in, maybe 24/26lbs.

Thanks. :o

Have a look at the Bush Baby range, not cheap but very well designed and good quality. www.bush-baby.com/

Thank you. :)

I have a 99.6 centile boy and since he was 6 months I've been carrying him in a Babyhawk Oh Snap.

You can get it here or there are some on ebay.

It's not cheap - mine was £85 - but DS is now a 13kg 15 month old and I still carry him to and from the childminder every day in it with him on my front, and DH took him hill walking with him on his back too recently so we've got our money's worth!

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 08/04/2012 14:24

I had and Ergo which was fab but it is the same design as the one linked above.
That is what you need with a big baby. I carried DD2 (above the curves) until she made us fall around october, 22 months (?) and 14.4 kg but very long and active.
I think I would have done it a bit longer if she was willing to go on the back she is 26 months and still not 15 Kg (but even longer, 1 m).

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 08/04/2012 14:27

I mean the babyhawk, the bushbaby is too heavy and structured to be truly comfortable. May be you can try to swap with some other mums? a lot depends on your shape, height and fitness too.

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 08/04/2012 14:37

I know a lot of people find that Ergo's can get too small faster than they expected - plus, if you do go for an Ergo, be aware that there are hundreds of fake ones on Ebay (I'd go as far as to say nearly all the new ones on Ebay are fakes tbh).

I've got a Rose&Rebellion which I love, but Babyhawks are meant to be very good. As is the toddler size Patapum, which is a lower cost option.

Have a look on Natural Mamas and you can get second hand slings for very good prices there.

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 08/04/2012 14:40

Wraps are gorgeous but they are only comfortable if you tie them right. I was a big failure at that, so stick to things with straps now Grin

I meant to say, with Ergos, that a common complaint is that the body of the carrier is quite short so it doesn't come very high up the back of toddlers. That said they are very popular.

And I know, I know, I had a rogue apostrophe in my last post Blush

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 08/04/2012 14:56

All those carriers have a weight limit of 15 kg so wether your child reaches it at 20 months or 36 months is not up to you and won't change your choice.
DD2 was/is very tall and the back of the ergo was high enough for her.
What I mean is the ergo is very expensive (mine was 2nd hand and on its 4th child) and apparently they are fake around, but the overall design is good so the babyhawk or the toddler patapum should fit the bill. Or anything like that but check the safety measures, DD1 undid my waist buckle once, and the safeties on the ergo hold the all lot.

Where are you, Schrodinger? If there's a sling library nearby, you can go along and try out various slings to see what works best for you.

I have a Beco Butterfly which is great, still use it with my 20 month old. I prefered it to other SSCs especially when he was a baby as you can put the child in first and then put it on your back, switch from front to back without taking the baby out, and also pass it from one person to another with the baby in it.

SchrodingersMew · 09/04/2012 17:04

Sorry, I haven't had internet since yesterday.

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone!

Loopy I'm in Scotland! And yes, completely unsure of what I need/want. I just need something that is comfy and not too bulky and can support mahoosive DS :o.

I have posted on a local FB baby items selling site that I need a carrier and what I needed it for but no one seems to be understanding that he is too heavy, they're just seeing that they used them at 6 months plus so I should be fine. Hmm

I love the look of that Baby Hawk one, it seems perfect so might try and see if I can get that one.

Okay, :-) I've decided to try a moby wrap first just because it's a little cheaper but if that fails I will definitely be trying for a babyhawk. :-)

If you're in Edinburgh you're welcome to come and try my oh snap :)

SchrodingersMew · 10/04/2012 13:16

Loopy Thank you so much for that! If I find the babyhawk at that price I will just go for that, it looks great.
BigKids That's a lovely offer but I am in Glasgow. :-(

I wouldn't get a moby wrap for a 6 month old, stretchy wraps are only suitable for babies and you can only use them on your front. My 25th centile baby was too heavy for a stretchy to be comfortable by 6 months.

SchrodingersMew · 10/04/2012 14:56

Eeks, I will definitely go for the babyhawk then, I think DS is off the charts on centiles now. Scared to get him weighed! I've had a look on NaturalMama and can't find the babyhawk, loopy You don't have a link do you? Thanks. :-)
