What's your hba1c?

INeedARest22 · 15/07/2024 20:13

I was recently told my HBA1c is 39. My BMI is 24 and I am 30 years of age.

I'm super worried and very curious as to what others hba1c is?

So please tell me...
What's your hba1c, BMI/weight and height and age!

Thank you!

Never heard of it so had to Google it! no idea what mine would be

Prismsandprunes · 16/07/2024 09:30

You're only just in the pre-diabetic range so making some diet changes to low carb might be a good idea. What did your doctor suggest?

Mine is around the 5.4/34 range but I am diabetic, low carb and on metformin and ozempic.

SanMarzano · 16/07/2024 09:33

Why are you super worried? That’s within the normal range. What’s your diet like?

No, pre-diabetic is 41-47. Under 41 is normal.

Osco · 16/07/2024 09:36

Mine is 33; was told normal range is 22-40. I’m 165cm and 11 stone so BMI just over 25. I’m 49.

You're right I was doing conversions and went wrong.

alwaysonadiet1 · 16/07/2024 09:43

Mine is 30 with BMI of 24. You don't need to be so worried with a level of 39 as long as you are eating healthily.

SwordBilledHummingbird · 16/07/2024 09:46

Mine is 39 but my GP isn't remotely concerned as I'm not overweight (BMI is about 20), I eat fairly well and get a lot of exercise. I am keeping an eye on my sugar intake though as there's a family history of type 2 diabetes plus I think I'm predisposed towards being sensitive to sugar and I don't want to end up with a problem in the future.

BigBoysDontCry · 16/07/2024 09:48

Why did you have your HBA1c tested OP? Do you have other concerns that they suspected diabetes?

I'm a type 2 diabetic in remission with HBA1c of 35 and BMI of 20 and I'm 58.

WaitingForMojo · 16/07/2024 09:49

39 is absolutely fine.

INeedARest22 · 16/07/2024 21:52

Sorry I am aware that 39 is not pre-diabetic but I am worried because T2D runs in my family. My poor mum (who is very slim) has been keeping herself in the prediabetic range since she was in her late 30's. She hardly eats and is fit and healthy. I'm worried because I definitely don't eat as well as her but equally don't have a bad diet,

Mine was 34 this month. I'm 164cm and BMI of 39 weight about 100kg, so lots of weight to lose. It bounced between 34 and 37 for the last few years.

LIZS · 16/07/2024 22:01

Why are you worried, it is well within normal range.

Finewine76 · 16/07/2024 22:05

Mine was 97 5 weeks ago. Being tested again in 2 weeks to see if diet has helped it. Been prescribed metformin but don't want to take it really

LIZS · 16/07/2024 22:01

I'm worried because it increases with age anyway, so at this rate I will be prediabetic in 5-10 years.

pre-diabetic range is from 42? to 49 i think... 39 is normal

Rainbowsponge · 16/07/2024 22:10

To make you all feel better mine is in the 60s. I’m a type 1.

KathrynWheel · 16/07/2024 22:11

My HbA1C was 37 -39 for a few years then last year was 42. I started intermittent fasting 16:8 every day. My most recent HbA1C was 37 so I've continued with the IF. I am 59 years old. BMI 27.

alwaysonadiet1 · 17/07/2024 09:00

You could give 16:8 a go and retest in three months to see if it made a difference.

Did you mean to write 97?

BigBoysDontCry · 17/07/2024 10:22

The first finger prick test I did was 4 hours after eating and was 19.1 and that would give an hba1c of around 125 so I think 97.5 is perfectly plausible.

WaitingForMojo · 17/07/2024 11:58

With untreated diabetes, hba1c in the nineties is perfectly plausible.

People with type 1 will struggle to keep A1c anywhere near a non diabetic level. There are people who manage to get it in the low forties but most don’t.

Thegreatgiginthesky · 17/07/2024 12:28

Mine was 38 last year, made some dietary changes and it went down to 31.

You are in a good place as you are aware that it is on the high side so you are well timed to made changes.

Things that helped me
a) Reducing processed carbs - especially switching carby breakfast for a more balanced one with more protein and fat.

b) Cutting out added sugar
c) Follow the glucose goddess hacks - food ordering (always eat fibre, protein, fats before carbs), use apple cider vinegar to lower glucose levels, quick walk after meals to reduce glucose. If you eat starchy carbs such as rice and potatoes pre cooling and reheating them is really helpful to reduce blood glucose as it increases resistant starch
d) weight training - more muscle helps as it acts as a glucose store

Doing the above meant I lost 15kg and have actually increased the calories I eat each day from 1600 to 2000. I also have a ton more energy and feel so much better (no more afternoon slumps or food cravings)

BigBoysDontCry · 17/07/2024 12:30

I got mine down from that kind of level to 35 with changing diet and increasing exercise. Never had medication. I wasn't overweight to start with and did eat OK, but clearly have a predisposition to insulin resistance so have to be careful.

Everyone is just so different and also different in terms of what they react to and what they don't.

Thegreatgiginthesky · 17/07/2024 12:30

Sorry I didn't answer your other question
HBA1c 38 , BMI 25, age 43, 5'4", calorie intake 1600
HBA1C 31, BMI 19 age 44, calorie intake 2000
