What's your hba1c?

I was recently told my HBA1c is 39. My BMI is 24 and I am 30 years of age.

I'm super worried and very curious as to what others hba1c is?

So please tell me...
What's your hba1c, BMI/weight and height and age!

Thank you!

My BMI is very high and my HBA1C is in the normal range.

HbA1c gives an average value over months. It's not really the full picture.

DH and I both did the Zoe thing with a continuous glucose monitor a few months ago. He's got a familial history of T2 diabetes and was doing finger prick tests which suggested he might be heading the same way; I have PCOS so may have a tendency to insulin resistance. We're both 63 and overweight but not obese. We both had an hbA1c of 37/38.
The CGMs showed that our responses to carbs are very different - he'd get massive peaks and troughs, I had a considerably flatter profile. Really, despite his OK hbA1c, he was prediabetic. Since then he's lost quite a bit of weight, usually does 16:8 and lowish/low GI carbs, and uses CGMs from times to time to see his response - it's improving.

While using CGMs and the Zoe program can be expensive and a 'worried well' phenomenon, I'm inclined to think that if you've a good reason to suspect you may be liable to develop problems, it may be informative and can help guide towards healthier eating habits.

39 is a bit worrying at your age, you need to take action now re diet, exercise and lifestyle or you could end up diabetic. Does it run in your family?
Mine is 37, I'm 62 and my weight is 14 stone, height 5 foot 5.
I'm on a campaign of dieting 37 is more than I want it to be.

You don't need to join the zoe programme to test your blood sugar. I just bought a CGM for £50 (you can even get them on a free trial) and had a little play with what foods and cooking techniques affected my blood sugar. It was very informative and I really recommend it.

I'm a healthy weight BMI of 19-20 but was almost pre diabetic 3 years ago (40) . I've worked hard to improve my diet and exercise and just retested at 36 so I'm chuffed to bits. I don't think 39 is anything to worry about. I would look at as just a part of the picture of your overall health.

I'd second other comments about getting a CGM. I've just got one and it's an absolute game changer being able to see in real-time how different foods affect the blood glucose, timing of meals, exercise and timing of exercise, etc. It's made a massive difference to me in just the month I've been using them.

Different bodies react in different ways, which is probably why the "generic" dietary advice for weight loss and diabetes often doesn't seem to work. I now know what foods are "safe" for me to eat, and which foods, even ones that are supposed to be good, adversely affect blood sugar levels surprisingly.

I've had T2 diabetes for 25 years. Mostly well controlled, initially by diet alone, but over the years by ever-increasing drugs. It was a practice nurse who suggested a CGM so I've gone down that road. Already lost a stone in weight and average blood sugar levels are consistency falling, week by week, with minimal reduction in eating - it's all down to changing the foods I'm eating and changing the timing of meals/exercise!

Mine was 80 in 2022, lost 4 stone and got it to 40, gained a little and went to 42 and now I am on Mounjaro and its stable at 37. I am 60 and was diagnosed with Type 2 during lockdown. I managed it originally by diet alone and if you can be restrictive in what you eat or follow intermittent fasting it is possible to get into remission or manage with just diet. For me I was permanently hungry and miserable, the weight started to creep up and Mounjaro has been a game changer for me, lost weight, stopped smoking, stopped drinking and also no longer snore but the main thing is no longer considered pre-diabetic, in fact my diabetes nurse said with my HBa1c Levels I may not be eligible for the injections much longer which is another concern (I pay for them though not via NHS )
