SW consultant is obese

I was just wondering if any of you had come across this and if there were any SW rules about size?
My consultant is clinically obese (I found out her weight by accident). She reached target a few years ago (from a lot heavier) but has now put a bit back on. She doesn’t weigh in at group and tells us how well SW works for her. I am finding it all a bit odd.

My SW Consultant is overweight bordering on the obese, she regularly tells us of her struggles with food etc.. generally I find her very supportive and encouraging, but I don't like the happy clappy routine, not really interested in other people's weight loss journeys.

I'm not at all surprised to hear so many SW consultants are overweight, and they're living proof SW doesn't work long-term. I feel bad for them really as they lost the weight and thought they'd found the magic solution to being thin so bought a franchise, potentially left other careers...and then found they were wrong but are now a bit stuck.

Everyone has to find something that works for them long term and that they can stick to for life. SW is just too restrictive for most people and the focus on "syns" causes people to get a little obsessive over treats I think. I much prefer 5:2, it feels sustainable long term for me but I k is it's not for everyone either.

I don't know. i think its probably not restrictive enough for me Grin. I didn't lose any weight at all on 5:2 because I ate too much on the non fast days. having said that, I regularly miss breakfast on SW and it doesn't bother me and try to do a 12 hour fast every day.

Just playing devils advocate, but surely HCP know more about the dangers of obesity than a "sales person" does? Confused

Yes my SW leader is overweight.

I've been a SW member several times, I find it good because it makes me cook from scratch, I don't think much of the using things like mug shots & instant pasta meals but the proper recipes & meal plans are great. The best thing I learned was to use my slow cooker for meals during the winter, after seeing the slow cooker breakfast in the news recently I'm thinking of using that & adapting it by doing more tomatoes, mushrooms & beans but less of the bacon & sausage. My SW consultant was overweight but she spoke of her battles with overeating & her weight loss journey, before joining SW I had attended an NHS weight loss group run by a pencil thin leader who spent the whole session speaking about the evils of food & how we were all greedy & uneducated, the group shrank weekly as more & more members gave up.

Me too, @Riversleep, I avtually have to do 4:3 to lose, 5:2 to maintain. Blush

I have only been going six weeks and lost 12 pounds yay me i dont find it paticularly restrictive but i am having to cook from scratch morre and not rely on packets and jars the only thng i find hard is limiting the wine which is probably not a bad thing tbh....

I've never needed to join SW but I have shared offices with members for years. I'm not surprised it doesn't work, they eat loads of carby shite and not enough protein to fill themselves up.

AamdC snap! Been doing sw for 6 weeks and have lost a stone. It is working well for me, which has surprised me. I have tried every diet under the sun in the past 20 (30?) years and have lost and gained lots of weight. In recent years I have struggled to lose more than half a stone and get fed up easily. I've found sw good because I can eat pasta and rice, and it's made me cook. I don't really focus on syns but have cut down my wine consumption! I'm resigned to having to do it for life. £5 a week is a small price to pay ( I have previously spent £££ on lipo, not the magic solution I had hoped for!)

My hairdresser is a stick insect and she still goes to her weight loss group every month to get weighed in (bet they love her!). She says it keeps her focussed and on track!

Report
Riversleep · 15/10/2018 18:58

Platypus If your hairdresser is at target weight, she doesn't have to pay. We have loads of target members who go every week or couple of weeks. People put weight on if they lose weight then go back to the habits they had before. Same as every other eating plan ever.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 15/10/2018 19:36

Yes river she is a target member! She says she needs the ritual of the weigh in to stop her sliding (God forbid she become a size 6 Grin) She is a lovely person, and actually the one who inspired me to try a slimming group for the first time in my life!

Realised I didn't actually answer the OP. In my short stint we have had two group leaders, one who was covering while other training. Both have been lovely, but one is very thin. I can't ever imagine her being overweight, she looks like one of those naturally thin people. The other is still a little overweight, and I subconsciously feel like I relate better to her. I don't know how I would feel if the leader was obese, possibly a little worried that it wasn't as easy as they make it sound!

Why does Slimming World have such a terrible relapse rate? Or is it just the same as the relapse rate for any sort of diet? Genuine question.

Report
ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 15/10/2018 19:55

Another two stone would make me happy if not quite at target, AamdC! I know loads of people slate SW, but I have tried everything else! I find I am eating more consciously (a la Paul McKenna!), Cooking from scratch ( Just as my last non-diet diet decreed) and cutting fat (which seems to be a terrible thing these days!). I'm eating tons more veg (Gillian MCLEish eat your heart out!) and I'm still having the odd treat. It feels doable longer term!

A580 I have relapsed more times than a 60s rock legend, in every diet imaginable Blush. This time I am really trying to accept that I need to work at it for ever. I can have a holiday and enjoy it, but then I need to NOT be in holiday any more when I come home!

Mine was obese too. She knew the points for everything, was full of advice but obviously couldn't follow it herself. She said it worked but looking at her, I wasn't sure.

Me too. I have tried every 'diet' imaginable. I have never stuck to them or kept the weight off for any length of time. I didn't do crash diets, I did low carb or 5:2 or myfitness pal. I think if you do it on your own, there is no record of people failing and going back as people do it on their own and don't broadcast it, whereas SW because people join and register, there is a record of it. I would say most 'diets' or eating plans fail unless you can carry them on forever. It's bloody difficult. I'm struggling at the moment, but its because Im not following the plan properly, not because I am following it. I have stuck to SW more than I have stuck to any other eating plan. I agree that the wording of 'syns' is appalling ( even though it's meant to be synergy or whatever bullshit reason they give) but if you ignore the connotations and read the literature, it is a perfectly balanced eating plan.

Absolutley Platypus im very conscious of what i eat and im eating way more salad, fruit and veg than i have ever eaten , tbh i guess all diets only work as long as you stuck to them ,i know why i gained weight its a mixture of eating too much of the wrong stuff. Do far so good..

Over 95% of people relapse following weight loss as the diets are generally not sustainable long term. They followed up the participants of The Greatest Loser over a few years and virtually all had regained their weight and more on top. The results are replicated worldwide.

If you look at our biology it’s easy to see why. We are programmed to gain weight as thousands of years ago e had to adapt to times of famine, this was followed by periods of plenty. The fittest and healthiest surviving people were those who could gain weight and get through the famine. They then ate high calorie foods which ensured their survival through the next famine.

We no longer have famine (unless you count dieting which puts your body into a “oh my god it’s famine” mode”).

Equally we no longer have to hunt for our rich high calorie food. We can keapap in the car and go to the shop to buy our chocolate/crisps/cheese/insert food of choice.

And we live in an obesogenic environment,

What’s the answer? We have to replicate that. Hunting by exercise.

Exercise can start with a “something is better than noth8ng” approach. If you never walk anywhere then just adding 5mins if walk8ng a day is going to improve things.

We need to stop being impatient ....weight loss needs to take time. And we need to eat more (ie not diet) and move more, I always tell my DS it’s about choosing smart when it comes to snacks, I get him to look at labels and learn about them. So if he fancies a sausage toll from the shops then he looks at packs and chooses the lowest in fat etc, it’s stilk a. High fat food but he’s chosen more wisely and he exercises. It all helps.

I would rather have an overweight consultant who has struggled and lived the plan than someone who has lost weight with no problems and found it easy! That consultant will know exactly how you feel when you don’t lose or when you gain, she/he will know how hard it is to stay on track and common ways you maybe going wrong. They will feel super proud of that member who has struggled but got to target and appreciate their commitment more.

I've been a SW member several times.

This proves the SW diet doesn't work in the long term. If it did, people wouldn't have to keep rejoining. They would join once and be successful.

But u can tell she has it to lose but been that way. For years

They don't weigh in at their own group. She'll go to someone else's group as the client to do that.
If she's lost a lot then I don't see the issue what weight she is now.
