The worst and best Slimming world recipes

qwertyberty · 07/07/2017 00:11

I been dying to try some Slimming World recipes and this week I managed them. Unfortunately they both were disgusting, so I wont be making them again.
The first one was the diet cola chicken and the 2nd was syn free gravy. I have heard people rave about these recipes and I don't understand why. I felt the diet cola recipe was a watered down pasta sauce recipe and the gravy did not thicken and wasn't to my taste buds satisfaction.

The nice recipes I done is the crust-less quiche, potato wedges and roast potatoes using fry-light. I have used so many eggs and potatoes since joining SW. I have actually finished boxes of eggs, where normally they don't get used and end up in the bin.
So, is there any SW recipes you have tried and like or absolutely hated. Is there any thing that you eat more of, now than before joining SW.

Sticky 5 spiced gammon was awful. So salty and an awful meal. Mentioned it to my friend who had joined the class and she said the same.

LemonSqueezy0 · 09/07/2017 09:04

I always amend the diet coke chicken to half the stock/tinned toms so it's actually not as soup like. I liked it then.... You could try the pinch of nom nacho feast. That doesn't taste SW/diet food. Also, with gammon etc apparently you should soak it first, to get the salt out..

Caribbean pepper pot stew is delicious. Quite spicy but we like that. And the chicken fillet pizzas are lovely. I always add a few extra bits to some meals as I've found a lot to be a bit tasteless.

BettyOBarley · 09/07/2017 09:13

Any recipe involving using cottage cheese or quark as part of a sauce (or just quark in general) I've found to be vile!

BasinHaircut · 09/07/2017 09:27

The curries from the curry club recipe book are all amazing (well the few I've tried so far anyway).

getahellyeah · 09/07/2017 12:44

BBQ slow cook pulled pork is good.

I substituted the sweetener for sugar and synned it (only a syn or so per portion).

AdalindSchade · 09/07/2017 12:49

I tried to make a macaroni cheese once with egg, veg stock and quark - it was utterly vile. Watery, lumpy pasta in scrambled egg Envy

BasinHaircut · 09/07/2017 12:57

adalind (love Grimm) that sounds vile.

For mac and cheese sauce boil a cauliflower and some onion in a veg stock cube, drain and save the water and blend the cauliflower and onion adding back the water till you get the required consistency, then add some Parmesan or similar. A good low syn cheese sauce for macaroni. I also chuck some bacon medallions in for extra flavour.

I honestly thought it was my cooking. I was told about pinch of nom nacho feast and I am going to try that. I find that some of the recipes are not spicy enough for me or just the thought of some of the ingredients makes me gag. I did have a taste of the flapjack style cake thingy, sorry I wasn't impressed with that either. I think I have a very selective palate.

Pinch of nom waffles (made with blended porridge oats) were yummy.

FoofFighter · 10/07/2017 13:49

check out recipes on pinch of nom, slimmingeats and two chubby cubs.

I think the problem with the gammon recipe btw is that they don't recommend soaking it overnight first to get the salt out.

Diet coke sauce, you need to simmer it for a lot longer than suggested to make it into an actual thick sauce.

Not all recipes are going to be to everyon'es tatse of course but you can tweak and heat more chilli etc.

I love the sticky gammon! Massively firm fave in this house. Special fried rice is gorgeous. Made lamb dash last night and that was yummy too.

Made the chillie last week and it was completely tasteless. Thai fish cakes were ok.

The main thing that pisses me off is practically every recipe is 'peel and grate ginger, chop up a red chilli, garlic and stock' that is the basis of 70% if their meals. Sick of chopping feckin chillies.

1wokeuplikethis · 11/07/2017 14:11

Lamb saag

qwertyberty · 11/07/2017 14:38

Ha ha I know what you mean about chopping chillies, however, I found that Tesco does frozen chopped chillies and now I use them. Yes its a little more expensive but so much easier. They also do frozen ginger, garlic and some herbs.

Lazy chilli and lazy garlic are your friend.

I actually love Diet Coke chicken but you do have to boil it up for ages then it goes really thick and sticky. Two chubby cubs chicken chow mein is one of my favourites. I also make a lot of chilli, spag bol, curries (magimix for the curry paste makes it v quick and easy), pasta bakes etc. I also tend to use a few syns in cooking, makes stuff much tastier.

BasinHaircut · 11/07/2017 14:47

You can also buy chopped Chilli, ginger and garlic in jars. It's called 'lazy' Grin

Tunnocksmallow · 11/07/2017 14:48

I make the Diet Coke chicken but substitute with Dr Pepper zero, use less stock and use passata. And like pp cook longer.
Love the campfire stew with gammon too.

alwaysthepessimist · 12/07/2017 14:52

My favourite chilli one is this:

1 Onion, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1-2 tsp Paprika
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tbsp ground cumin
511g extra-lean minced beef
400g can chopped tomatoes
4 celery sticks, finely chopped
2 carrots, peeled & finely chopped
Salt & pepper
400g can kidney beans in chilli sauce

Method:
Put the onion, garlic, spices & beef mince in a large non-stick frying pan. Stir-fry over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes.
Add the tomatoes, celery & carrots & season. Bring to the boil & then simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring often, or until the beef is cooked & the vegetables are tender.
Add the kidney beans to the chilli & heat through.
Extra Easy - Free

alwaysthepessimist · 12/07/2017 14:52

BTW the lazy stuff is sometimes synned. I buy it all frozen & ready chopped - herbs, spices etc etc, if you look in the world food section in the freezer it is normally half the price too!

Fikee · 19/07/2017 21:15

I agree with you on the Diet Coke chicken, I really disliked it. Also hated the sw fish pie, my children still talk about it as the worst meal I've ever given them! On the other hand the sticky chicken is absolutely delicious and I like the carbonara, bolognese, curries and chilli.

Firsttimemama2017 · 19/07/2017 21:46

Faves in this house:
bolognese ragu
Chilli
Chicken tikka masala

JaceLancs · 20/07/2017 06:54

The baked chicken risotto is lovely
I just add whatever veg I have last week it was mange tout oyster mushrooms and red peppers

Dancinginthemidnight · 20/07/2017 07:06

I love the nacho style feast. There's been a lot that have been disgusting but I can't remember what now.

SallyOMalley · 13/08/2017 11:09

I love the SW recipe book 'A taste of Asia'. Yes, lots of chopping but pretty easy and quick to cook. Once you have the herbs and spices in the cupboard along with soy, hoisin, teriyaki and sweet chilli sauces etc, I find it's easy to rustle hot something without a special trip to the shops.

I love beef pad thai, fragrant Vietnamese chicken and chicken donburi yakitori. Oh, and the curries from the Fakeaway book are good too.

SallyOMalley · 13/08/2017 11:09

*up not 'hot'!
