Back on SW but find the groups awful! Does it get better?

I used to go to SW two years ago and that consultant didn't do image therapy. She would say how much was lost or gained collectively and pick out a couple of people who had good losses and ask them one thing they thought helped. It took five minutes. She'd hand out certificates and it was all quite laid back. She told the same stories about herself week in week out however and that got frustrating - I was so tired of hearing about how she used to sneak fish and chips every week! It wasn't for the benefit of new members as there weren't any really! I rejoined recently and hated the first group so much I don't ever want to go back. Two hours of listening to "babes" "gorgeous" "shiny stickers" and her speaking to every single person in the room about losses and gains. There were 40 people there!! I can't bear all the air kissing and the mwah mwah business and the "hi girls" banter. It's too pink and fluffy and covered in glitter. Now I just weigh and go.

Should I stick it out and get swept up in it or do I just bail every week? All the happy clapping and sisterhood bollocks gets on my nerves so much. If I didn't pay to weigh I wouldn't be as good on the diet so I don't mind that, but should I really try to stick this out or just run? I'm in my thirties, "shinies" don't really excite me that much lol

I have a countdown too but not sure if I stay to class as I don't want the pressure I got to make a target for the next week.

user1484578224 · 20/01/2017 19:06

i'm playing the long game ha ha

alibongo5 · 20/01/2017 19:07

Just say "maintain" every week! Or a lb. I never, ever seem to achieve what I set my target as but I rarely get picked up on it!

catsarenice · 21/01/2017 03:35

The mushed up fruit does make sense: takes about 9 oranges to make a glass of juice which you'd drink in 20 seconds, it wouldn't fill you up and you'd still want food. You'd never eat 9 oranges in one go though so by juicing/mushing you're likely to eat a lot more and therefore consume loads more calories. Same goes for smoothies etc. You'll find the same with some other 'tweaks': there was a recipe someone found that used practically a whole tub of smash (which is free) but as it wasn't being used in its intended way and tons more was being used than if just having it with a meal, it no longer free and has to be synned. I love staying to group - I find it fascinating!!

BasinHaircut · 21/01/2017 06:53

I think you have to use your common sense with this though. Mashing a banana for, say, overnight oats I wouldn't syn, because I might have eaten a banana with my porridge anyway = no more calories.

But if I was making a smoothie using a shit ton of fruit that I wouldn't have otherwise eaten, then I would definitely syn it.

catsarenice · 21/01/2017 07:40

Oh yes, one mashed banana In porridge I wouldn't syn either as it's being used as food as intended.

twofloorsup · 21/01/2017 09:27

I always used to have mashed banana on toast and could never fathom why that one banana magically had syns because I mashed it rather than sliced it !

alibongo5 · 21/01/2017 09:54

Exactly! If you don't use more than you would have eaten in it's "intended" state, I wouldn't syn it and think it's ridiculous that you're expected to. I was told that it was a tweak having a bit of fresh pineapple in a Chicken dhansak rather than eating it as a snack! That made no sense to me! I now just shut up about these sort of things in group.

catsarenice · 21/01/2017 10:24

I guess it only becomes a problem if you stop losing weight

Linda131963 · 21/01/2017 10:46

Just been to group , l am l a weigh and go person because over time l have worked out it is the dread of staying that makes me stop going ! Joined again 2 weeks ago and mentioned to leader l would probably not be able to stay very often ! In queue for scales today a lady started chatting and asked how l was doing , said she had made some onion soup for tea last night and sprinkled a crushed scanbran in for texture ! No ! No ! Told her l had a Warburton toastie pocket with cheese and onion filling and a huge salad , she quickly told me they are 6 syns without even the cheese ! I foolishly said l hadn't had my ex a or ex b so cheese was covered and toastie pocket was wholemeal so sort of ex b plus a couple of syns ! Wow , she told me not to mention it because l was naughty ! Got weighed , lost 4lb she asked how l had done , bit cheeky ! Told her and she said l was lucky and my naughtiness would probably show next week !!! Thanks for reminding me why l don't like staying ! X

I couldn't stand the local group I went to. It was all huns, babes and bloody mugshots. It was also extremely cliquey.

The meetings were sitting in a circle leader reads out losses and gains and asks what went wrong/right that week. Then a quick talk on a topic normally what slimming world meals were coming out that week in Iceland.

Hated it.

BasinHaircut · 21/01/2017 12:28

Linda I think that is a classic example of someone who doesn't understand the Diet. They think that buying muller lights, mugshots and scan brand will equal results, when really it's about eating foods that you actually enjoy.

Getting people out of that mindset and into their kitchens is what I think the group should be all about

alibongo5 · 21/01/2017 12:55

Totally agree Basin. Our co-ordinator seems to get the balance ok - she cooks a lot from scratch and tells us which recipes have been particularly good and does hand-outs of these for those that want them. But also tells us about new products etc for those that want those.

So I can forgive her about the tweaks - as she said once, she has to tell us what are counted as tweaks according to SW

But I do think it's funny that she takes her own SW gravy to restaurants in a thermos and takes the filling out of sandwiches at buffets etc and leave the bread!

I don't think I could ever be as "on plan" as she is bless her!

catsarenice · 21/01/2017 13:23

Am I the only person who loves mugshots??

alibongo5 · 21/01/2017 13:46

catsarenice I quite like them occasionally as my guilty pleasure! I've always liked pot noodle type things!

Groovee · 21/01/2017 15:12

I like the chicken and sweetcorn. I find them great for days where my hands can't chop and I need something easy to make. I usually drain off excess liquid and serve with salad and cold meat.

randomer · 24/01/2017 09:55

food isn't " naughty"....what does it do.....jump off the plate and refuse to tidy up/go to bed/do its homework

tabulahrasa · 24/01/2017 10:07

"Exactly! If you don't use more than you would have eaten in it's "intended" state, I wouldn't syn it and think it's ridiculous that you're expected to"

It's not about your portion size, it's that it's easier to eat and digest, which means it doesn't fill you up the same and you'll be hungry sooner - that's where the extra calories come in.

It's your choice whether you'd sun thst or not, but it's the consultant's job to point out that doing the eating plan as it's supposed to be gets the best results.

Linda131963 · 24/01/2017 15:22

Ha ha Randomer l did think that ! Does my head in all this being naughty rubbish ! I work in catering and the amount of times l hear somebody say ooooooh l am going to be naughty and have chips !!! Hmmmmm ! X

randomer · 24/01/2017 16:40

bloody hell if I was going to be naughty I would rob a bank, not eat two mashed bananas.

alibongo5 · 26/01/2017 15:18

It's not about your portion size, it's that it's easier to eat and digest, which means it doesn't fill you up the same and you'll be hungry sooner - that's where the extra calories come in.

I don't tend to snack much so it was part of a meal and it filled me. I ate nothing else before or after and it made no difference to what I ate. I can sort of see what they mean to try and keep it simple, but if I have it in a meal instead of separate and I have nothing separate in its place no, I'm not going to syn it.

randomer · 28/01/2017 11:40

so its pouring this morning...we shuffle into the grotty Church Hall...everybody badly dressed, no eye contact. One or two obviously know each other. The woman in front of me must weigh all of 7 stone.
The regular gaffer is off, so a new one looks awkward and talks about parking.
I feel briefly like I am in some ghastly queue waiting for some kind of immigration status or food stamps but no, it is to be told I am a loser .

Flowerfae · 29/01/2017 14:02

This is exactly why I'm doing SW on line... can't be doing with groups lol

catsarenice · 29/01/2017 15:29

I find group is great for people watching - don't even need to pay for the cup of tea!

muminthecity · 29/01/2017 20:09

This thread is so funny! I actually love my group, the leader is funny and kind and down to earth and I've made some good friends there. However, I do find it excruciating having to listen to the details of everyone's week, and whenever anyone in group has a gain, the conclusion is always the same - that they haven't eaten enough and should have more syns! How can that be true? Doesn't make any sense! Our group is next door to Sainsbury's and I've often seen some of the regular 'gainers' in there after group buying cream cakes and fresh bread - think that's more likely to be the cause of their gains!
