Back on SW but find the groups awful! Does it get better?

I used to go to SW two years ago and that consultant didn't do image therapy. She would say how much was lost or gained collectively and pick out a couple of people who had good losses and ask them one thing they thought helped. It took five minutes. She'd hand out certificates and it was all quite laid back. She told the same stories about herself week in week out however and that got frustrating - I was so tired of hearing about how she used to sneak fish and chips every week! It wasn't for the benefit of new members as there weren't any really! I rejoined recently and hated the first group so much I don't ever want to go back. Two hours of listening to "babes" "gorgeous" "shiny stickers" and her speaking to every single person in the room about losses and gains. There were 40 people there!! I can't bear all the air kissing and the mwah mwah business and the "hi girls" banter. It's too pink and fluffy and covered in glitter. Now I just weigh and go.

Should I stick it out and get swept up in it or do I just bail every week? All the happy clapping and sisterhood bollocks gets on my nerves so much. If I didn't pay to weigh I wouldn't be as good on the diet so I don't mind that, but should I really try to stick this out or just run? I'm in my thirties, "shinies" don't really excite me that much lol

Not to mention star week Hmm

randomeragain · 14/01/2017 19:14

thankfully my star is not in the sky anymore. But I'm sure we'll be hearing all about the hormonally challenged hons soon.

lostfairydust · 15/01/2017 00:22

Oh Thank Goodness for that!!! I'm new to SW and was so secretly bemused / amused by group...

I'm one of an influx of newbies half of which have been 'on plan' before and 'slipped'. They all drink (friend I'm going with and I don't), they can all stomach sweeteners and muller light yoghurt but I'm turning into one - I've even bought fry light even though I can't see the difference with my olive oil spray...

I'm gobsmacked by the mashed banana revelation- I have it in porridge every morning and not going to stop - mashing is pre-chewing...

Group will be much more fun after reading this.... thanks huns WinkGrin

Lol !! I have just joined mumsnet and loved all the SW comments. I have joined and re-joined several times to try and shift that stubborn menopausal extra stone....it's still there!! I figured I needed the discipline of the weekly weigh in but couldn't stand the meetings, I tried...I really did. But I'm an intelligent woman in the later part of my 50's (the new 40's Smile ) and I knew I shouldn't be there when I stood behind a woman who took her glasses off to get weighed!! and then we clapped someone for gaining!! I dreaded it getting round to my turn to speak.."so what are you aiming for next week?" Duh..a weight loss obviously. And I never got the splitting the room into 2 teams to score points, why, wtf was all that about. Anyway, I'm starting on the Suirt diet tomorrow so I'll log into that chat in a couple of days and let you know if I'd rather dust Smile

These frozen sw meals. I was told they are the exact same meals from the sw recipe books.
I usually batch cook myvown currys etc and freeze but bought a few of tgese frozen meals as emergency back up.
Why do they now need to be served with aa ton of superfree?
When i was last at sw and making the sw chiken tikka massala i was told no need to add veg as a side dish because the recipe contained fresh tomatoes or 2/3 tins of tomatoes, x onions, xmushrooms, xpeppers or whatever. So why if you buy the frizen version do you need to add veg/salad? Its all in there. Surely 1/3 of your curry is veg?
Its shit like this that doent add up to me.
Abd as a question wgat veg does one est with a chocken tokka massala?

randomeragain · 15/01/2017 10:56

omg....we had the splitting the room into teams thing and some of them were getting all excited about it!! sorry but WTF.

Muller...puke.

will stick at it though as hopeless alone.
sorry Novemember dont know about the meals.....salad with everything?

WetNovemberDay · 15/01/2017 12:13

Well im joining again on Wednesday so will ask re the meals then.
Random - i think if in doubt add a salad might be the way to go!!

Youve also just reminded me of the shit games ill have to join in on!Hmm

minimuffy · 15/01/2017 15:47

I need to find a bitter and twisted group where I can moan about missing butter and not just have the 'you CAN have it, just syn it!' eh nah!! I want lashings of lurpak on a part baked baguette with my soup!!!

Previously done ww, so this is a first on sw, lost 3 1/2 lbs last week though, so at least it's a start

Thingymaboob · 15/01/2017 15:51

Yeah, I'd love to set up an alternative group were we can all talk about our desires to eat a grab bag of buttons, followed by a packet of kettle chips, washed down with wine! The groups are not really my scene!

Linda131963 · 15/01/2017 16:56

Over a few years l have been a repeat offender at joining and drifting away from sw ! First group fine but was a struggle to stay but bearable . Second time , leader lovely but it was like a big happy slightly disfunctional family , quite a lot of older ladies because it was 3.30pm and mums with young children . Slowly lost will to live while l listened and clapped , once listened to a cross lady go on and on for 10 minutes about freezing spinach . Then l caused mass upset when l dared to mention Muller lights not being very nutritious ! Latest class , had to stay first week to join and firmly decided part of the reason l give up is l hate staying to group ! So this time l will get weighed and politely leave , l need to feel accountable for my weight loss and being weighed helps ! Would be nice if the meetings were better and more inspirational ! X

itsbetterthanabox · 15/01/2017 17:22

I always end feeling snobby in SW groups but come on!

Drquin · 15/01/2017 17:38

Thingamybob ...... we've got our own unofficial group! We have a laugh at the "Huns", the inability to lose weight despite eating ten kebabs after 5 bottles of wine (our own, as well as others!)

To be fair, the friends I've made in our wee group are a better support than any of the rest of it.

We did consider just going it alone, pooling the communal £30 a week we pay and using it for a nutritionist or personal trainer every know and again ...... but we'd miss the entertainment value of SW Grin

BasinHaircut · 15/01/2017 17:40

This thread is making me look forward to and dread my first proper meeting tomorrow in equal measure!

Linda131963 · 15/01/2017 17:41

I have tried so hard to grin and bear it but just think it makes me dread going ! It would be so much better to miss out the general clappy bit just prahaps new folk and shiny sticker awards ? Takes so long , would be nice to hear people's recipe ideas and discoveries ! X

randomeragain · 15/01/2017 18:16

its just " oh well done Doris another half off" or " Oh dear Haley do you know where you went wrong" or some fab new product that can be found at the back of Asda on a Wednesday morning at 9.27

randomeragain · 15/01/2017 18:18

or advice on how to blanche a cauliflower, cover it in quark and turn it into a yummy pizza.....yeah right

twofloorsup · 15/01/2017 18:25

Or smoosh up scan bran and make it into a cake just like Black Forest gateau using quark and frozen berries. Mmm yum yum Confused

iklboo · 15/01/2017 19:01

I did make the hot oats today. Now THAT was nice. I didn't use the obligatory Muller Light, though, just fat free fromage frais instead.

Trying a new group this weekend. Closer to home & our friend says the consultant is really nice.

randomeragain · 16/01/2017 09:53

lol scan bran. might as well eat carpet

LlamaBananas · 18/01/2017 23:31

Joined today. My class went on for a painful 1 hour and 45 minutes. Not sure after the stressful car park scram as well if i can face the same hell next week.

Im considering going to my old group 18 miles away or perhaps try WW.

Redazzy · 18/01/2017 23:33

This has made me chuckle. I recently rejoined after leaving my first attempt at SW in disgust after our group had a ballot to elect a Miss Slinky. Barf. Just so you know, it was never going to be me (honestly, not bitter 😡) but the concept of such a thing was dreadful.

I do think the general plan makes a lot of sense and it suits me (when I stick to it). Having said that, I have no idea what scan bran is and the one and only time I tried a mug shot (mug shit) it ended up in the bin. I like the 'real food' element and the fact that there is no counting.

So I am back and have just endured the first meeting at which around 50 people reported their gains and losses. It went on forever. For me weighing and leaving is the way forward. My rebellious buttons get seriously pushed by the earnest sharing. I remember a leader once saying that tipping a little ground ginger into your tea made you feel as if you were having a ginger nut biscuit! WTF? No, it doesn't.

I am still trying to work out what that all means for me in terms of my weight issues. Is my judgement of the group an avoidance technique or a realistic view? Reading this thread has made me feel better and less of a weirdo not to feel the group is a social highlight of my week! Thanks.

BasinHaircut · 20/01/2017 08:05

redazzy I stayed for my first group this Monday and whilst I'm not sure how much I got out of it, I'm going to stay for the next few weeks at least to give it a fair go and hopefully get to know a few people as there might be some support there rather than in the formal image therapy bit I reckon.

BasinHaircut · 20/01/2017 08:07

Oh and we have a support thread on here that is really motivating and supportive that I'd recommend getting on!

Redazzy · 20/01/2017 13:58

Sounds like good advice. Thank you.

user1484578224 · 20/01/2017 18:01

can't get my pea like brain to change my user name but I am randomer btw.

the support thread on here is ace and much more help that those classes.

I have bought a 12 week countdown so I will keep at it but can't see myself staying with the Doris gang week after week!
