Losing 6 stone... is it possible?

knowler · 30/11/2015 11:51

hello. I'm starting SW tomorrow and am thinking about my target weight. I'm 5 foot 7 but weigh nearly 17 stone (aaaargh!!). Nearly all my adult life i've hovered around 13 stone and although I know this is still overweight, I look OK at this weight and feel healthy.

the question is, do I give 13 stone as my target (4 stone loss) or (gulp) go for a 6 stone loss which would take me to 11 stone and finally put me within the 'healthy' weight for my height?

Is 6 stone a feasible loss (it sounds impossible) and how long would it take? I'm thinking about 18 months.

TIA for any help.

Ah, thanks Buttwing, it's been a while so I had forgotten the maths, that's very helpful Smile

MoodyMabel · 15/12/2015 06:46

I was 18 stone and put 11 as my target. Yes it seems a long way off, but 2 stone 9 off now so far. When I get to target I'm gonna show off and tell everyone I lost 7 stone lol. Someone lost 11 at mine so really is possible

shelllouise · 15/12/2015 23:10

I got my 7 stone award on my 1st anniversary of doing SW so yes, it's doable :) Good luck xx

greenfolder · 22/12/2015 07:05

My colleague(female) has lost 8st in just under a year. I also go to group with a woman who lost 7st at a pond a week. Took her just shy of 2years.

FlopIsMyChristmasGuru · 27/12/2015 13:37

I've lost four so far since June by attending meetings. I did an intern target of four stone which I achieved just before Christmas but have set a new target moving forward.

ScaredPAD · 27/04/2018 04:14

I know this is an old thread but if googled "losing 6 stone."

I was curious if any of the posters are still around and if they ve kept the weight off?? I'm really inspired by this thread as I obviously have a lot to lose....

MyGuideJools · 27/04/2018 19:13

hi scared I lost 5 stone last year. it took me 9 months. but then my dear dad died and I went to pot and put three stone back on.
I rejoined in Feb and have lost a stone so I'm slowly clawing it back!
I enjoy the plan and am glad to be back on it.
Good luck! you can do it!!

ScaredPAD · 27/04/2018 19:54

So sorry to hear about your dad :(

I'm super impressed you lost 5 stone and even with the gain it's a net loss! And sticking at it for 9months and losing so much well done!

Groovee · 27/04/2018 20:52

I've lost 4.5st with SW and over 5st since I was told to lose weight. I've been at target nearly 6 weeks. It's all about a lifestyle change for me. I have lots of soup in my freezer. I have a chronic illness. When I was poorly, I used to eat crisps. Nothing but crisps but with planning I can manage much better. I feel so much better too!

MyGuideJools · 27/04/2018 21:47

I was so close to target😕
honestly if I can do it anyone can! I've never eaten so much fruit in my life, but it used to be chocolate. I was surprised how quickly the weight came off. I lost 7lb in my 1st week, then a steady 2-3lb

Kezzie200 · 28/04/2018 04:27

Yes, you can. If SW doesnt suit you, you still can.

Ive lost 3 (1 with SW).

Pick a 13 target, see how you feel when you get there. A target is only for motivation purposes, pick one that motivates you rather than feels pointless or impossible.

Some people take a stone at a time. I say i want to be 10 stone and plan right from the start for the full hog.

Good luck! SW wasnt for me but it was a worthwhile experience. Just dont give up on yourself if SW doesnt suit you.

ScaredPAD · 28/04/2018 09:32

I'm not sure if SW is for me as it him I I may get obsessive but when you what 80% of obese dieters fail it's so heartening to hear some success!!

Groveee I have a chronic condition too and that's entirely how the weight went on with easy access food. How did you turn it around?

ScaredPAD · 28/04/2018 09:32

Freezer soup sounds good. Do you make it? Ive not made soups much before.

Kezzie200 · 28/04/2018 10:13

I think lots fail as they think the only goal is target weight. True, thats the best option, but its still very good to lose 1 stone....2 stone...etc etc as feel better, eat more healthy, tend to get fitter as feel better....

So even some weight loss is worth going for and seeing as a positive. Then, as feel better.....can target to lose more

Groovee · 28/04/2018 12:01

I broke everything down to half stones.

Then I spent time working out menus. Most meals take 20-30 minutes to cook. Asda and Tesco do a value frozen veg pack of carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and peas that I use for cooking when days are bad. They're great in soups, curries etc.

I just use whatever veg I have in, carrot, leeks or onions, and potato them add in some chicken or bacon or leftover gammon. Pop in the soup maker or on a pan then blend up if you want or leave chunkey. Then I leave it to cool before splitting up in to bags or tubs and freezing.

ScaredPAD · 28/04/2018 18:07

Sounds good groove. What sort of meals do you have midweek... (just fishing for ideas.)

I struggle with organisation and planning and think a proper plan would help and is worth me trying to crack

Groovee · 28/04/2018 20:38

This week is Beef Stroganoff (pinch of Nom)
Stovies (my own recipe using Heck sausages, potato and onion)
Mayflower chicken curry in the slow cooker
Spaghetti Bolognese
Baked potatoes with tuna cheese and salad.
Seabass with potatoes and steamed veg.

Last week was Gammon, wedges and salad
Cheeseburger Pasta (slimming eats)
Paprika Pork (slimming world)
Iceland SW burgers with chips and rolls cheese and salad.
Home made pizza using kings mill thins.

I was pretty much like the OP. 5 foot 8 inches and a whopping 17st 9lbs.

I set my target at 11at 9lbs to bring me into health BMI. I joined Jan 3rd this year and have so far lost 3st 13lbs of my 6 stone goal.

There are two routes to take with Slimming World in my view. There are those that live off muller lights and other sweetened junk or there are those of us that eat healthy meals with everything cooked from scratch with the odd muller light thrown in.

If you are the former and live off muller lights and mugshots (vom) you are bound to fail as it will get boring quickly, however if you plan your meals from scratch and make everything fresh you will succeed as it allows you to make a substantial healthy meal that is nutritional.

There are loads of slimming world food websites around. Have a look and you will be surprised at exactly what you can make

MyGuideJools · 29/04/2018 07:53

I agree fromtheshires I really don't like mullerlight. I have Greek style ff yogurt with a teaspoon of honey.
And lots of lean meat and fish with veg/salad/rice.
It really is a healthy diet. when I started I was amazed at what I could eat.

ScaredPAD · 29/04/2018 11:55

Ooh groveee thankyou I will :)
Shires that's a stone a month!?!? Well done. Im a but heavuer than your start and it jsut seems so much to lose but that's impressive!!

I want to do from scratch mostly and fresh and have no desire to buy muller lights or nug shits or weight watchers meals! But I need to structure what I do eat as I don't quite know how I've become this huge...

fromtheshires · 29/04/2018 12:23

Structure is key Scared. The reason I have done so well is I plan and never deviate whereas most in my group gain when they fail to plan ahead. I even go as far as no unplanned meals out and when I do go out, I always look at the menu online and optimise where I can such as subbing my chips for a jacket potato and eating the healthiest foods on the menu. Thrice cooked chips, onion rings and beer battered cod is a no no now.

I plan all my meals for the week in advance, batch cook things like slag Bol and soups and put them in my dedicated slimming world freezer in the garage and I even have a few of the slimming world ready meals in there in case I come in late or forget to take the food out of the freezer.

It becomes second nature and after a few weeks it will be easy to plan. You also need to know syn values and don't assume. My mum couldn't work hour how she was maintaining or gaining and when I looked in her fridge the healthy yoghurts she had been eating were Synned so she was eating more syns than she should have been. Her reasoning was they were 0% fat so must be free.

It may sound a little obsessive but I got myself here by making bad choices and if I need to be obsessive about making good choices until I can trust myself then so be it.

dilly123 · 29/04/2018 14:20

If you think smaller goals would give you more motivation then set a series of 'interim targets' .. you don't have to give your final target until you're closer to it so you can decide how you're feeling nearer the time.. I found looking too far ahead seemed like such a mountain to climb it had an adverse effect on my motivation.. lost 4 stone 5lb 1lb away from target.. Good luck

fromtheshires · 29/04/2018 14:23

Oh and don't worry about how much you have to lose. Structure that as well. I had 6 stone to lose but I never look at it like that. I see it as half stone increments. If I said to you, lose 6 stone or lose 7lbs, 7lbs is much easier. It's kind of the same mentality as one more bit with children. Set little goals that are easily achieveavle so you meep motivated.

Go to group as well. I don't care that everyone thinks it's a bit pants. I kind of do too, however you learn great hints and tips and holding yourself accountable to relative strangers is actually quite a powerful drive. Just grin and bear it for an hour.

ScaredPAD · 29/04/2018 17:33

It sounds like i need to get my head around planning and organisation!! And meals which arent just instant/grabbable.

I read stuff and agree with it/think it's a good idea and then it goes out the window as I find it hard too retain info!

Oops 're the typo up above about mug shots embarrassed look.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 29/04/2018 17:54

I would do it in stages. So set your target to 13st, then you can aim for another target afterwards. I think that setting yourself little goals is the best way to achieve weight loss. Thinking "I have 6 stone to lose" seems a long way away, so set yourself mini goals! So every stone you lose, have a takeaway. Every couple of stones, get yourself a nice outfit, vice versa.
