i was just prescribed phenegran for my 1yr old you give them 1mil just before bedtime it wont work straight away but give it a couple of nights.the reason you cant buy it for under 2s is its not tested on babies under 2 but given in smaller doses you can use it.my own advice is try it for about 3 weeks then stop it and see how your child goes down after that ....fingers crossed

sad36 · 11/03/2005 15:36

How much did you give Marne? It says 2-4 5ml spoons for a 2 year old. Wasn't sure whether to give 1tsp or maybe only half?

Why not phone a chemists? I wouldnt personally ask for advice on medicine for your child on a chat room.

Just gona add my two pennith worth. Liek sally strawberry my DD was very similar not just a matter of waking at night and crying but full projectile total stomach vomit histerics hyperventilation... you name it she did it. I still have sooem nights now when she will stand in the hallway and have a class on hissy fit. Ive also traveleld long hall to Aus on several occasions and endured that stress, and a student nurse single mum to boot. Phenergen is linked to SIDS in the under 2's and is a strong medication. It is found in a dilute form in medi sed, tixylix nighttime. However like others have said i would try absoluelt everything before i resorted to drugs. I causes alot of concern to HV;s GP's etc because medication of convience like the trend of ritalin in US are a form of abuse. Not meaning to sound heavy but thats the fact. Some GP's will turn a blind eye and in thsi instance i would change GP. It shows a just give you a script to get rid of you attitude. I assume that all underlying issues have been delt with? a full GP MOT so to speak, no ear problem, excema, eats well.... if all these are ok then id look at alternative health (cranial osteopathy is great with non sleepers) or practical issues like conrolled crying which in my house became a big vodka and alot of prayers... nothing wrong with drugging yourself to numb the noise and ease the stress! So hope that may help. Id argue that the medicatiopn isnt the issue it is the reason for medicating that is dubious.

oh and its phenergan... jsut realised ive mis spelt it!

I had to LOL when I read this thread - My ds2 (18mths) is developmentally delayed and has just started waking up occasionally in the night - about 3am and behaving as if it is morning. I was very worried that this might be something to do with his `condition', but having read this thread, it sounds as if he is spot on developmentally with this habit !

sad36 · 12/03/2005 12:36

OK Hercules calm down, only asking out of interest to find out what worked for her.
My DD has got in a rut of early morning waking and several people have recommended a mild sedative to break her habit. She doesn't eat well and the whole thing is a viscious circle which I am keen to break for her sake as much as anything. I am not one who believes a doctor knows everything so would prefer advice from people who've been there rather than just someone who has studied medecine. My opinion and my preference, you don't have to agree

in that case make sure she eats before sleep sounds as thois waking up hungry - please do consider all other routes before medication from experience it made our situ worse

I'm sure nobody wants to use drugs on their children as a first choice, but I guess it just depends what you have tried and how desperate things have got. We too are going the homeopathic route as far as possible but have really come to a difficult point with the 4am waking. CC does not work at this time in the morning - she will just keep going until its time to get up! Maybe she has just had enough sleep by then? Who knows? Wish there was a manual to follow for this parenting lark. At the moment we are going swimming at 5pm everyday to make sure she is totally worn out but so far hasn't made a difference. She goes to bed fine at 7pm, totally knackered by then but just ready for the morning rather earlier than we are! And later bedtime makes no difference. Sad36, our DD barely eats anything at all so I'm sure that may be part of the reason, but whatever we try we just cannot get her to eat. HV says its quite common and not to worry. Easy for her to say!

hercules · 12/03/2005 16:02

perfectly calm, thankyou sad.
Just dont understand why you would want advice from a chatroom on how much sedative to give your one year old. There have been people posing as experts before on this site and handing out advice and i'm sure there will be in the future.

It seemed a far more sensible suggestion to speak to a pharmicist. Sorry if that sounds so wild.

hercules · 12/03/2005 16:03

or pharmacist.

Phenergan and Medised both contain the same active ingredient, Promethazine Hydrachloride.
Have a look at this link for more info on medications containing antihistamines.

geekgrrl · 12/03/2005 16:46

that's the medised for over 2 year olds.
I completely agree with hercules - and I really don't have any issues with people using sedatives to sort out their child's sleep problems (after all I use sedatives) but I think it is wreckless to ask for advice from a bunch of strangers - how on earth do know that they even got the medicine name right, the concentration etc???? We're talking about something that suppresses breathing in under 2s - if your child wakes due to sleep apnea (disordered breathing during sleep) using Phenergan could be life-threatening. As layperson cannot always diagnose sleep apnea. I completely understand how crippling lack of sleep can be but really - most GPs are very sympathetic and this is not something to mess about with and I find it quite shocking that people are so willy-nilly about it and happy to self-medicate their baby without any guidance from anyone but people on a bulletin board.

there are 2 types of medised, one for babies and one for over 2s. Very confusing isn't it - I think they stopped doing one of them now.

They've stopped the baby one. I believe it was deemed unsafe for under 1 .

The medised that I have is suitable from 3 months and I've used it several times with ds2 since he turned 3 months. As long as you read the label and use common sense I don't see the harm. Since ds2 turned one he can now have the same dose as ds1 who's five. I don't use it for sleep problems, just when he's ill which is quite often as he's a sickly child. I do controlled crying and he now has a healthy sleep pattern of at least twelve hours a night.
