pipsy & marne - I've found that my GPs have been more than sympathetic when I needed sedatives for the children. They're humans too, often have their own kids and know what it's like. Really, do ask for the right sedative for your child. Apparently Phenergan (promethazine hydrochloride is the active ingredient I think) is linked to SIDS in babies - not really something you want to risk.

pipsy1 · 04/03/2005 19:23

Many thanks. Will go ask GP on Monday - so much better to be safe than sorry. daddy doing weekend so me in spare roo with earplugs so should be feeling a bit better by Monday anyway.

anchovies · 04/03/2005 19:28

My doctor told me to buy some phenegon for my DS (13 months) did as I was told not knowing what it was and was a little bit concerned that reading the small print it says its for over 2s. That plus the SIDS risk geekgrrl mentioned, I am NOT happy...

Chemist was fine about giving it to me, they didnt ask what i wanted it for (had my dd with me)
, gave her a small dose (half the recommended dose for a 2 year old) that was at 7pm, shes still awake and no signs of feeling sleepy yet, dont think i want to risk giving her any more after reading all the side effects on the leaflet.
Anybody got any ideas what to do next?

Takes a while to work Marne so hope it worked for you in the end. I was too chicken reading eveyone's comments so another early start for us here. Too tired to even care anymore...

marne · 05/03/2005 19:47

Hi, DD went to sleep about two hours after i gave it to her, she still woke in the night but went straight back to sleep, ive uped the dose tonight, shes still awake at the moment so not much luck yet. Keep you posted..

How did it go last night Marne? And how old is DD. Our DD goes off to bed fine just wakes at 4am ready for the day. Wonder if it would help her sleep through a bit longer. She is fine, but we are dead on our feet. Just a bit worried about the age thing though

hercules · 06/03/2005 10:00

I know I'll be slated but Marne your dd is 1 years old. Why would you use phenergan which is only for 2 years and up? IF you look on the sleeping threads you'll see there's loads of excellent advice. I'm not one for cc but that has got to be better than using phenergan on a 1 year old.

Hi,
Used it for two nights, she slept alot through both nights, i havnt used it tonight and she has gone straight to sleep, i dont think there is any harm in using it ocasionaly but i dont want to use it to often. Willing to try anything to get a nights sleep! going to start todler group soon, hopefully that will tire her out.

My GP prescribed Phenegon for my 6 month old when he was going through a stage of not sleeping due to virus etc..

I can' remember now but it was a very small dose 1/2 teaspoon?

I didn't give him it though, felt a bit funny about it but she obviously was happy for babies to have it in small doses.

Geekgirl,
Started this thread to find out if it was safe to give phenergon to under 2's, found out children under 2 had been perscribed phenregon (thats all i wanted to know)
Now i know it can be safe to give to under 2's i can decide if i want to use it on my dd,
This thread has been realy helpful to me and hopefully to others.

Please consider teh side effects- can cause growth problems and in some children can make them hyper I would not use it ever again after the pain it caused us when dd had it

But this is an chat site! WOuld you really go against a products own instructions and give a one year old medicine only for a 2 year old based on what you've read on a chatsite??

Nemo1977 · 07/03/2005 21:20

marne the thread was a discussion of sleeping habits and products..i wouldnt stress what u do with your little one is up to u.
