Grobag AND blanket?

MarmMummy · 02/10/2008 21:33

I know that they aren't meant to have extra blankets if using a grobag ... and that overheating increases the risk of SIDS (which is why I keep checking on her in paranoid manner!), but have put DD (5 months old) in grobag with cellular blanket folded on top of her. Its freezing!!!!! ..... Well about 17/18 in her room!

Please tell me that other MNers do this. I want to be guided by my common sense and she feels warm, but not toasty with blanket too, but hate to break the rules.....

Thanks!

what is she wearing under the grobag- as in vest/ sleepsuit longsleeved, shortsleeved etc? how many togs is the grobag? do be careful not to overheat- 17/18 isnt THAT cold but how cold does it get in the night....

Habbibu · 02/10/2008 21:39

What tog is the gro-bag? I used a blanket with dd - wierdly couldn't cope with the idea of not tucking her in! - so we used a 1.0 gro-bag, made sure she wasn't over-dressed and used cellular blanket.

TanE · 02/10/2008 21:40

I too use a blanket on top of grobag for same reason although my ds is 9mths and weighs a lot, so not sure if good to advise you. Try this site for help:

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/10/2008 21:41

We did but her room got a lot colder than that abou 12/13, Ds age 14 weeks is in vest sleepsuit and a blanket which he kicks off

StrangeTown · 02/10/2008 21:43

I've got 2 blankets on DS tonight, he is in a 2 tog growbag. I will add another before I go to bed. His hands are still like ice in the mornings, it's 18 degrees in room.

bluemousemummy · 02/10/2008 21:43

ds has grobag AND duvet at the moment but he is 21 months, so slightly different. I think I used to put extra clothes on him (eg a cardigan, vest and socks as well as sleepsuit) when it was really cold, cos he would always kick the blankets off anyway!

bluemousemummy · 02/10/2008 21:44

Btw, 18 is supposedly the ideal temperature for a baby's room - but I agree it does feel freezing to me as well!!

littlefrog · 02/10/2008 21:46

well last winter with ds (i guess he was 7-10 months in the coldest bit) i put him to sleep in vest, long sleeved vest, babygro, 2.5 tog sleeping bag and depending on how cold it was, 1-3 blankets as well. and he DEFINITELY wasn't too hot! his room did get pretty chilly though.
now it's 17-18 and he's bigger (18m) he's currently in babygro and pyjama top, with a 1 tog bag and no blankets.
i'd go with common sense - by which I mean feeling how hot/cold your baby is, rather than how cold you think the room is, there's a big difference!

pudding25 · 02/10/2008 21:47

I have a chart. When it is 16-19 degrees, you should have a 2.5 tog bab with a long/short sleeve vest and a sleepsuit.
They do not need a blanket as well when it is this temperature.

Their hands are not a guide to how hot/cold they are. You need to feel their tummy/back of neck.

Do not use blankets too. You are at risk of overheating your baby.

pudding25 · 02/10/2008 21:49

bag not bab!

OldieButGoldie · 02/10/2008 21:54

Last night my DS room temp was about 16 - 17. He had vest, sleepsuit, 2.5 tog grobag and one blanket. One time when he woke and I picked him up his hands felt FREEZING, really, really cold and I gave him another blanket.

cafebistro · 02/10/2008 21:57

Its just started to get cold here ( cold enough to need central heating on, but we dont have it on at night) and DC's bedrooms are freezing! With my 7 month old she has vest, sleepsuit, sleeping bag and 2 thin blankets. For DS who is 3, he has sleeping bag and a duvet on. Pudding25, I understand that there is a chart advising on what covers are needed but I honestly think I would put common sense first. There is no way that my DC's would be warm enough with just a sleeping bag in the winter regardless of what the guidelines say.

MarmMummy · 02/10/2008 21:58

Thanks for replies. Its a 2.5 tog grobag and she's wearing a short sleeved vest and a babygrow underneath. Never seemed such a big deal with her brother, but she hates to be chilly!I felt her earlier and she seemed fine - certainly not hot.....

Now trying to work out if I will get more sleep if she's warm, or less because I won't be able to sleep for worrying about over heating!

I put a blanket over DD in her gro-bag. Room temp 18 degrees. I have started putting a pair of socks over her hands, only things that will stay on, as they are freezing.

jojoisamum · 03/10/2008 07:32

Well we had problems with the temps here last night. His room started at just over 20 at 6.30 last night but ended up being 14 at 6.30 this morning.

He started the night in vest, sleepsuit from Next with mits folded over and his 2.5 tog grobag. When I went in at midnight to feed him I put a celular blanket (folded over so 2 blankets really) over the top of him as it was just 17. When husband went in at 4 for the next feed it was below 14 so he was still in his grobag but DH loosely swaddled him too to keep him warm.

This is just October!

JasmineM · 03/10/2008 09:41

Yes my 6 month DS woke up at 4.30am and I felt he was cold in a 2.5 grobag with vest and long sleeved pyjamas, so put a cellular blanket over him too....
I was a bit anxious but I think it's fine, despite the official advice, if you feel they are not toasty enough - there's nothing worse than being cold in bed!
I dread to think what temperatures we are going to have in December/January!

Becky77 · 03/10/2008 10:10

It is freezing at the moment but my DD is just in a T-shirt bodysuit, terry towelling babygrow and a 2.5 tog grobag. I just remember that they wont die of cold as they'll just wake up, but they can die of over heating... It's so difficult to know though as it really does feel freezing when I get into bed.

mookickkick · 03/10/2008 11:27

I am also not sure about covers, but I'm using a short-sleeved bodysuit in a sleepsuit inside a summer grobag (1 tog or less I think) with a cellular blanket. DD feels fine though her hands are ice-cold and our room is about 19 degrees. If she starts kicking off the blanket, then I will switch to a 2.5 tog bag.

imaginewittynamehere · 03/10/2008 11:45

At 18 degrees dd used to just need her grobag but if it was 18 degrees when I put her to bed her room woudl go down to 12/13 in the middle of the night so she would get a blanket too.

All children are differtent so you have to use commen sense as well as the chart which is a guide not total fact. I agree with pudding who said to check the temp of their back etc as hands are never a good guide.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 03/10/2008 11:56

Just an idea we got a cheap o run electric wall heater (think it costs something like 2p an hour) which is on in DD's room all the time that has made a big difference.

EachPeachPearMum · 03/10/2008 12:06

I only did when it was 12/13- 17/18 is fine- if shes wearing a vest and sleepsuit they are usually fine down to 15/16. If she's cold- she'll let you know!

beforesunrise · 03/10/2008 12:16

i put dd2 in long sleeved vest, babygro, 2.5 tog grobag and blanket. i have no chart, but it feels freezing in her room, and her hands get so incredibly cold it makes me want to cry.

with dd1 we were in a different flat and she was fine with just babygro and 1 tog sleeping bag, but i realise now there must have been 5-8 degrees difference between the two flats!

also, dd1 likes to sleep ina cooler room, whereas dd2 prefers it a bit toastier i think!

Seona1973 · 03/10/2008 12:38

I have never used an extra blanket with a grobag and my lo's rooms have been known to go down to 14 degrees in the winter. They have been down to 16 degrees the last couple of nights but ds has been fine in a 2.5tog bag with a short sleeved vest and pyjamas on. It doesnt matter if their hands are cold as long as the main part of their body is cosy (tummy and back). Rather than using a blanket (which defeats the object of using a grobag as they are supposed to take away the issue of being able to kick off the covers or wriggle under them) then add extra clothing instead e.g. cardigan, socks, etc

lauraloola · 03/10/2008 14:34

Our room as 14 degrees this morning! Dd wheres a 2.5 tog grobag, sleepsuit and pj top. I have been told not to put a blanket on aswell as the grobag.

I have a few fleece sleepsuits to use when it gets colder.

pudding25 · 03/10/2008 20:38

Please do not use their hands as a guide. You are in danger of overheating your child.

We have set our heating thermostat to 18 degrees so if it gets colder than 18 degrees, the heating will kick in to bring the temperature back up to 18 degrees.

Be very careful about putting extra blankets on your baby, especially if it is 16 degrees and above. These guidelines are set for a reason.
