God this heat is absolutely brutal for sleeping, isn't it. We've been really struggling too - I ended up buying a cooling mattress topper last week and honestly it's made a surprising difference. Not a miracle cure but definitely takes the edge off the hot back situation.

A few things that've helped us in this weather:

  • Thin cotton percale sheets instead of brushed cotton (way less sweaty)
  • Putting the duvet in the freezer for 10 mins before bed (sounds mad but works!)
  • A cool shower right before getting in, not warm
  • Freezing a hot water bottle (yes, really - stick it in the freezer and use it as a cold pack)

There's actually a really good roundup of cooling products that actually work on SleepWell if anyone's looking - they tested a load of stuff properly rather than just listing Amazon affiliate links: sleepreview.co.uk/?utm_source=mumsnet&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=rep

Stay cool everyone, this heatwave is no joke!

Damned right it is no joke.

This is the main reason I hate hot weather.
Literally zero sleep Wednesday night. Zero because my temp would not drop.
Thankfully slept last night in spite of it still being very hot.

Anybody telling me this 'glorious' weather is worth a totally missed night's sleep can go away.

There was no other reason for it. Not stressed etc.

Good tips though. I hadn't thought of the cold water bottle.
I use cooling mats but mine heat up quickly. Maybe there's better quality ones out there. I can't freeze mine.
Mine's a chillmax by jml. It cost a tenner.
Useful in normal conditions but maybe not in this extreme heat.

Really well although waking up early - I was cooler yesterday morning but no breeze today.
i have a fan and window open a tad.

imtootiredforthis · 26/06/2026 06:39

The only thing that’s worked for me is sleeping with an ice pack under my head. It seems to regulate my body temperature a bit.

I’m still really struggling though. Barely sleeping, waking up a lot, and waking a lot earlier than I usually would.

fedexxxxx · 26/06/2026 06:40

I find the cooling mats heat up very quickly and are super uncomfortable to lie on.

Fizbosshoes · 26/06/2026 07:13

I slept really well on Wednesday night, unexpectedly. Last night felt like there was no breeze at all, and I barely slept. Have been freezing a hot water bottle but last night felt like I needed about 5 of them for different body parts! I put my pj's in the freezer after hearing a tip about it - very underwhelming result, I dont think I'll bother again

CaptBirdsEar · 26/06/2026 07:15

Lying naked with no covers, I slept remarkably well.

My inexpensive jml one works OK in normal conditions so it's worth it on 'everyday' heat but not this.
It was hot after an hour or two.

rolipoli · 26/06/2026 07:19

Those with portable air con units which one did you buy?

bumblingbovine49 · 26/06/2026 07:28

Sleeping has been fine actually. With all the doors and windows open in the house from about 8pm onwards, plus all the fans on blowing the.hotter house air outside
, the house becomes bearable again. I was sweating a lot because of the humidity but a damp travel towel around my neck and face helped with that .

I am waking leas tired than I have been in a while but quite early.

It ia the daytime and afternoon that is stifling . Everything closed and all blinds down. The house feels like a dark stifling tomb.

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/06/2026 07:31

For me it’s not the heat, it’s the bloody owls and birds as my windows are open!

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/06/2026 07:32

Surprisingly, I’m managing to sleep fine. It was 28C and 60% humidity in my flat at bedtime last night, even with all the windows wide open. I’m not sure how I’m doing it. All I can say, is I have travelled a lot and have had some practice.

Pacificwave · 26/06/2026 23:30

Really badly. I hate the heat.

fedexxxxx · 27/06/2026 00:30

Still almost 31 degrees in our living room. I’d sleep in the garden if I didn’t bitten to death.

RudolphTheReindeer · 27/06/2026 05:12

Awful night here. It's 30+ upstairs. I decamped to the sofa at 2.30am but a stupid fly kept waking me up.

I tried this too. Took about 5 mins for them to warm up.

SleepyLondoner · 27/06/2026 19:09

I've been exactly the same — last night was brutal. One thing that genuinely helped me was swapping to a cotton percale sheet set. They breathe so much better than the brushed cotton ones I had before, and they don't trap heat the same way.

I also got a cooling pillowcase (the bamboo ones are decent and cheap on Amazon) and popped a frozen water bottle wrapped in a tea towel at the foot of the bed — sounds bonkers but it lowers the temp in the duvet by just enough.

If anyone's thinking about bedding changes for summer, I found this guide useful when I was looking: sleepreview.co.uk/best-sheets

With a cool shower before bed, a chilled gel pad in my pillowcase, frozen 'hot' water bottle on my feet and fan pointing at foot of the bed, lying on top of my duvet. Husband will often move rooms at some point during the night. We did have the window open until it fell out and has had to be boarded up.

Owly11 · 27/06/2026 20:19

I'm sleeping very well, thank you for asking 😴 I have the windows open as soon as I wake up for an hour, then windows, blackout blinds and curtains and doors closed all day.

SleepyLondoner · 04/07/2026 08:12

I bought one of those cooling gel pillows from Dunelm last week and honestly it's made such a difference. Still wake up a bit warm but nowhere near as bad as before. Also found that putting a hot water bottle in the freezer for a couple of hours and sticking it between my knees helps loads - weirdly effective!

Do you have a link to the gel pillow? I'll try anything!

My husband often migrates to the spare room in the middle of the night. I am TOTM so hotter than usual anyway. He says the spare room is much cooler and has invited me to join him, but despite the heat I love my bed.
