Melatonin from US

My son has the melatonin gummies from US and we are running short. My friend has offered to send some over as she lives there and we aren’t visiting till October. Is there any reason she can’t do this? Is it legal?

10mg is really strong! Do you have very weird dreams and wake up feeling like you’re hung over?

Try the 3mg slow release, you’ll likely find it as effective with less side effects.

I don't, u sleep well but wake up almost as if I've had lots of sugar or something.

Will look for slow release lower dose.

oneniltothem · 14/07/2024 22:47

What are the dosage of the gummies ?

oneniltothem · 14/07/2024 22:51

My reply has been hidden I'm not sure what I posted that was wrong I was just going to say that I am in Spain and they sell them here depending on what strength I think. So if you have anyone going to Spain they might be able to bring some back for you 🥰

Here, paeds won’t prescribe it. Camhs won’t prescribe it. The only way we got it prescribed was private Camhs at £300 an appointment.

NHS Camhs say they only prescribe it very short term and that it loses effectiveness so shouldn’t be taken every night.

Private Camhs say it’s totally harmless and that it can go up to 8mg.

Both say that ordering it online is a child protection issue if they find out that someone is doing it (we aren’t).

The post code lottery for children is ridiculous - we are 4 and a half years on from initial nhs prescription for my dc and no loss of effectiveness. It always makes me sad when people struggle on for years due to bad access and/or bad advice

You can order them yourself on line, we use biovea

This. Both my adult DD and myself have bought them from a very reputable company in the UK (can't remember the name now). Just Google it.

How can it be a reputable company if they're happy to sell prescription only drugs without a prescription? 🤔

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 14/07/2024 23:41

I'm a terrible sleeper and a shift worker to boot. I fall asleep fairly easily but wake a lot especially at 4/5am with anxiety and I struggle to nod back off.

Looking at Biovea would the 3mg time release be suitable do you think? Don't want to start too strong but want it to be effective.

Fair point, but what I meant is that it wasn't from a dubious source. The brand I was buying was Natrol, and the company may well have been Biovea as others have mentioned. My GP has just started me on my third 13 week course, so I haven't had to buy it recently.

It's OTC in a great many other countries and has been for years.

The question is why is it prescription only in the UK?

Soonenough · 15/07/2024 05:39

I used to get it from the States when visiting and stock up . But I had to stop taking it as the side effects of graphic dreams was too much.

Tinkerbot · 15/07/2024 05:45

Promethazine is quite different -don’t take that.

Squirrelsnut · 15/07/2024 05:45

I get mine online with no issues.

Londonnight · 15/07/2024 06:08

Family post tablets of melatonin to me from Canada. Never had a problem with doing this.

JellyBeanFactory · 15/07/2024 11:01

Does anyone who takes melatonin have a glass or two of wine? I have really difficulty in sleeping away from home and am off on a long weekend away for a family wedding in couple of weeks. I will need my melatonin but would also like to have a drink!

Try travel sickness tablets!

I buy it regularly from piping rock. Never had an issue with customs etc

Same. Have ordered from them for years

CleanShirt · 15/07/2024 11:48

Thank you those who mentioned Biovia, I am stocked up now! :)

Nah,

My DSs ADHD nurse was spectacularly unsurprised when I said we bought the gummies (and he is prescribed melatonin but foudn that the long acting one they prescrobe wasn't as effective for him). It's an open secret. No pharmacist or doctor has ever been able to explain why its so restricted here, and I've asked loads.

geography21 · 15/07/2024 12:11

I was told that we lack long term uk based studies for melatonin with regard to consumption by children. That there are studies from other countries but that there is insufficient uk data.

That was 4/5 years ago though.
