Where to put newborn to nap/lay during the day

Hello!
Would appreciate some advice - I'm due Feb with my first baby and have confused myself with all the available sleeping options!

We plan to have a bedside cot for the first six months but I wanted to know what the best option was to let baby sleep / lay in during the day downstairs?

I've thought about a Moses basket / dock-a-tot etc (I know the risk of the latter so unlikely to go for this).

What are everyone's opinions? Help much appreciated :)

I always used a Moses basket, on a stand.

I've used this Tommee Tippee basket, it's been amazing. Sadly my 4 1/2 both old has now outgrown it so picked up a travel cot to replace it downstairs for naps and a baby prison for when he's mobile. Feels like the end of an era 😪.
Definitely, 100% avoid the dock a tots/sleepy head type things- so unbelievably dangerous. Good luck with your little one, enjoy and savour every second when they arrive 💕

We had a baby box and eventually also a purflo nest, but he didn't really nap in either, opting to snooze in the baby carrier or on my chest instead, and occasionally in his pram. Wasn't until 9 months that I was able to get him to nap away from me.

Mine largely slept on the floor on a mat during the day. Obviously more difficult if you have other kids/dogs very drafty house etc bit I ha e many a picture of one of the asleep under a baby gym or just on a mat.

Other option we had was a pram with the flat bottomed carry cot/ basket top which could be lifted off - useful when not at home.

I wouldn't buy too much expensive stuff at this stage - every baby is different!

I had a Moses basket, it was rarely used to be honest as my newborns just wanted to be held while asleep! So I’d recommend investing in a decent sling/wrap too or get some good box sets lined up so you can just sit on the sofa and be their bed for the day!

Moses basket or pram basinet.

However, be prepared for the fact that for the first few weeks, your newborn may only want to sleep on you. A sling that you can comfortably wear around the house is therefore an excellent investment.

I currently have an 8 week old who is really struggling to nap in the daytime. We have a snuzpod but also use the pram and our baby Bjorn carrier. In reality though, the most successful naps are when she is lying on me while I sit in the dark in our bedroom! Our living curtains aren't blackout and it's not helping. I'm waiting for some blackout linings to arrive so I definitely wish I'd thought of that beforehand. I think a dock a tot might have been useful but I think she would have likely outgrown a Moses basket already

Used a moses basket with stand downstairs for my DC, it was easy enough to transport to any room I was in too

I used the carrycot part of the pram

Sunshineclouds11 · 15/09/2023 12:09

Moses basket

Tiredmumno1 · 15/09/2023 12:35

We used this for downstairs Smyths

KnittedCardi · 15/09/2023 12:44

Good old-fashioned pram outside by the back door, carrycot inside. As pp spent a lot of time asleep on the floor under baby gym too.

msp2023 · 15/09/2023 15:33

Thank you all!! This was super helpful :)
Think I'm leaning towards a Moses basket now but will check out all the options everyone's stayed.

We have a snuz pod next to me which has a detachable cot so we just take that downstairs each morning.

PurBal · 20/09/2023 19:58

Moses basket. Babea bouncer that lies flat (also sits up right so we can all sit at the table together). Pram. Lie flat car seat. Play mat on floor. On me.

EthicalNonMahogany · 20/09/2023 19:59

you might get one that only naps in a sling, so get a wrap sling suitable for newborns

MadeFrom100percentPears · 20/09/2023 20:16

If you are thinking of breastfeeding, my experience is that they won't nap anywhere except near you. They will fall asleep feeding and you will be a couch prisoner! It has its frustrating moments without doubt but I look back very fondly on those times now.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/09/2023 20:19

Sleeping? Maybe a Moses basket. They look pretty. But as for a newborn sleeping that won’t happen. On you will be your best bet.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 20/09/2023 20:21

Moses basket, that went upstairs at night.

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/09/2023 20:23

They’ll probably nap on you!

crabette · 20/09/2023 20:30

I used the pram downstairs! Figured it's there anyway and spent a fortune on it, DD loved sleeping in it.

Did also have a Moses basket but she preferred pram as I think she was more used to it.

Chanhedforthis · 20/09/2023 20:39

Moses basket, we have toddler and dogs so need to keep baby safe and out the way at times.

Yokaiwatch · 20/09/2023 20:40

Mine slept in a baby box in the living room. She loved sleeping in there and best of all it’s totally free. I don’t know why more people don’t use them.

This is a Google picture (not my actual baby!)
