My newborn sleeps! And I'm worried about it!

My baby #2 is 9 weeks old.

He didn't sleep for two nights when he was born and since night 3 he's woken for two feeds nightly for 10 mins or so then right back to sleep.

The last week I've fed him when I go to bed at 10, he's woken at 3.30 for a quick feed then back down til 7am.

EBF.

He also sleeps most of the day still with a couple of hours awake time in the evening.

Obviously this is amazing, total contrast to #1 who didn't sleep til he was 2 and still doesn't sleep much now.

I'm happy of course but genuinely concerned today that he's sleeping too much?! Surely this isn't normal for a newborn?

Not a stealth boast promise!!!

My first was like this. As long as he is gaining weight, having plenty of wet nappies and seems happy and content then just enjoy it.

mybabysleeps · 01/09/2023 18:18

@Thesearmsofmine he is a chunky baby and has been since birth, and all he does is smile and giggle when awake. I'm not sure I've heard him cry yet. Are we just really lucky? I feel it. Just worried he should have 'woken up' a bit by now!

My second was like this, a complete dream sleeping and eating wise, enjoy !

DailySnail · 01/09/2023 18:20

Oh my goodness. As a mum of a 3 year old who DEFINITELY was not like that and a 10 month old who was like that, I'll tell you to please please please enjoy it. You won a baby lottery :) 🎉

Cowlover89 · 01/09/2023 18:20

Perfectly fine 😊

LuluJili · 01/09/2023 18:29

My nephew was like for the first 3 months or so. To the point everyone would be prodding him and worrying.

We joked that we were just a really boring family that had nothing going on to interest him.

He made up for it between 3-12 mths and was a nightmare sleeper. Then reverted back and was one of those toddlers who could sleep for 10-12 hrs and needed to be woken up in the mornings.

He was the same all through primary school and was one of those rare kids that even needed waking up on Xmas day , though was difficult to get to sleep the night before.

Oddly, as a pre-teen and teen he just slept an average of 8 hrs or so, never excessively like some teens do. His Mum thought that was her karma from having an easy sleeper when he was little, that she had a pre-teen or teen up at 7/8am waking the rest of the house 😂

mybabysleeps · 01/09/2023 18:39

Ok maybe I should stop worrying then. I know it's silly just found myself panicking today that there was something really wrong. It's such a contrast to his older sibling.

Yeah, I could have written this about my second baby. I even took her to the doctor to ask if it was normal and if she was ok! Unfortunately it all changed at six months 😫.

YukoandHiro · 01/09/2023 18:42

Unicorn baby. Enjoy it!

Pip1402 · 01/09/2023 19:02

As a currently pregnant mum to be who is terrified about the sleepless nights to come, please please tell me your tricks?!

DinnaeFashYersel · 01/09/2023 19:05

Both of mine slept from 11pm till 7am from 6 weeks old. Both EBF.

As long as putting on weight and lots of wet and dirty nappies there's nothing to worry about.

But keep quiet about it in baby groups or people will hate you. 😂

mybabysleeps · 01/09/2023 19:06

@Pip1402 honestly I'm doing nothing differently to what I did with #1 and he never slept. I think that's why I am so confused 🤣

@DinnaeFashYersel yes I try not to tell other mums with young babies as I remember how hard it was with #1. Broke me!

@Pip1402 you will be fine btw. Please don't dread it! Congrats!

Don’t worry mine was like that till 5 months then the walking was worse than newborn. Since he went in his own room though we sometimes get 12 hours solid so keep your fingers Crossed.

SabrinaThwaite · 01/09/2023 19:14

DC2 was like this and continued to be a great sleeper, although the 4am feed continued much longer than DC1, who slept 11pm -7am at 8 weeks.

We just got lucky.

Flittingaboutagain · 01/09/2023 19:16

My first didn't sleep. It was so hard. Second was an absolute dream! Both EBF. Just different people from in utero! Enjoy!

Tailfeather · 01/09/2023 19:16

Mine was a sleeper too! I assumed because he was chunky. And he never regressed. I kept my mouth shut around other new mums at baby groups in case they thought I was gloating!

bogoblin · 01/09/2023 19:22

My second baby was like this too! I feel like he honestly just slept the first few months of his life away. He is now nearly 1 and also a big chunk and a lovely happy baby! Those second babies get what they can 😂

YouHoooo · 01/09/2023 19:26

It must be a second baby thing!

DD1 nearly broke me. DD2 has slept happily whenever and wherever I’ve wanted her to from birth.

I’ve done nothing different! It has reassured me that I wasn’t my just a shit mum to my non-sleeping colicky first one (who is now lovely but still regards 5am as morning).

headcheffer · 01/09/2023 19:27

Mine were both like this as newborns. Enjoy op!

Imenti · 01/09/2023 19:29

My second was like this and I was also a bit worried! Also EBF. She was totally fine though and her wake windows gradually lengthened in the day and she is a very happy girl.

Now she is 1 and we are enjoying teething, illness and almost 2 months of 5.30 starts
....honestly I think I'm more tired now than I was this time last year 🤣🤣 so enjoy the quiet time!xx

Blessedbethefruitz · 01/09/2023 19:30

My second was awesome too, had us googling a lot! She woke up every 4ish hours from 7pm to 9am for a long but quiet laying down feed - would burp VERY audibly by herself while still lying down - and go back to sleep! Slept at least 20 hours a day until a few months old. I got a lot of puzzles and quiet games in with our first - who still wakes more than now 19 month old dd - which made him very happy.

She's a bit more demanding now, mainly clingy when awake, and trying to copy her big brother with potty, dressing herself, etc 🤣 admittedly quite successfully!

Enjoy yourself, and your time with your oldest! It's like a whole different world having a healthy baby who actually sleeps!

Tryingtoread · 01/09/2023 19:32

My daughter was exactly like this basically from birth! For the first couple of weeks I used to set an alarm every 3 hours in the night to feed her because I worried! Once she got up to birth weight I stopped setting the alarm and she’d wake for a feed every 6 hours or so. She did have a HUGE cluster feed (up to 3 hours some nights) for the first few weeks. She was sleeping 10-5 by 6 weeks or so, nothing I did, just the way she was! She’s 2.5 now and sleeps 12 hours a night - I have to wake her in the morning for nursery or she will wake herself at 9. She’s thriving and healthy in every way, just loves her sleep! I will be so sad if/when it changes and I have ultra early mornings to contend with. Pregnant with number 2 and praying for the same again!!

Mykittensmittens · 01/09/2023 19:38

Enjoy!

my DD slept 10pm till 7am from week 7. I would feed her at 7/8pm. DH would FF her at 10ish (I was already asleep!) and then she would wake at about 7and we’d feed again and snooze. I had a lot of lovely sleep - don’t worry - karma got me with DS 2 years later.

she would also sleep 11am ish till 1pm ish which meant having had a good nights sleep I could then do some chores/shove something in the slow cooker/garden!

she was bliss. As a teen she can sleep for England too, and woe betide I communicate with her before she’s ‘come round’ .
