9 month waking for feed still

I wouldn’t say I’m at the end of my tether, but I am getting there. 🙁
my son (9 months old) keeps on waking every night at around 1 am, we try to settle him with dummy/ water/cuddles/shushing, but he cries until he has been changed and has been given 7 ounces of milk (which he drains!!!!)

so his routine usually goes like this:
wakes 5am 7oz milk about 5:30am
7:00 am porridge made with 4oz milk
try and keep him awake until 10 for 1st nap with 7oz milk
10-11:30 nap
11;45 lunch
1:30 bottle 7oz
wakes 2:45/3:00 (school run)
4:30 dinner
5:30/5:45 bath (not every night)7oz
6:15/6:45 sleep
in the first few hours he is tossing and turning and maybe having a cry so we put his dummy back in.
then he wakes at 1 am, change nappy give 7 ounces of milk. Then wakes between 5/530.

I don’t know if I am being too optimistic, but this just seems like I’m doing something wrong? He eats three meals throughout the day, so he can’t be hungry? But there is no way I could let him cry out for ages at night that’s why we give him the bottle.
ANY ADVICE IS VERY WELCOME 🙏🏽
XOXO

He eats dinner at 4.30, that’s early. And it’s normal for babies to wake until 1 and beyond for feeds. Babies don’t all know to just eat 3 meals a day like adults, young children usually need snacks too.

Garman · 27/09/2022 21:53

Why do you change his nappy always at 1am?

ijustlikefood · 27/09/2022 22:03

My little girl had a dream feed at 10:30 then would wake for a further feed during the night until 3 weeks after she turned 1 ,
Could you maybe add a supper ?

ChittyBang1987 · 27/09/2022 22:16

Think at 9 months we were doing
7am approx May have been 730am breakfast
830am bottle.
930am nap till 11am
11am maybe snack depends.
12pm lunch
130pm bottle
2pm/215pm nap guve until 4pm maybe a snack on waking.
5pm to 530pm dinner
7pm snack on one of our dinner or her own supper. We can't always eat with her for several reasons.
730pm milk.
8pm sleep ( I know late but my lo never slept 12 hours no matter what I did at least this way we got to 630 to 7 wake up)

Maybe try upping calories in day? Also adding a supper. Weetabix and milk used to go down well here.

I would also say lo is overtired that's long awake time from 5am till 10am. If I read that right??
Then short awake time from 1130 till 130? As you have school run, will lo sleep in buggy? If not a little tinkering with naps may need to happen.

ChittyBang1987 · 27/09/2022 22:17

With night feed. Forgot to add. Tough couple days. But no matter what we didn't offer milk but upped calories in day. Maybe add an extra bottle. We didn't as my lo started dropping bottles as soon as she tasted food.

Emmalizzie831 · 28/09/2022 01:28

In regards to the not napping until 10am, the HV suggested to try and wait it out until 10 to “reset” his body clock lol 🤷🏽‍♀️ sometimes he does nap for 30mins but DING he’s awake and then he’ll nap at 10am.
We are in car for school run so if he did fall asleep trying to transfer to pram is a no go…just wakes up.
now you’ve mentioned it 11:30-1:30 wake window is small isn’t it 🤔….but he always seems grizzly and seems tired, maybe I should try a snack?@ChittyBang1987

@Garman what time would you suggest tea time??5/5:30? And we change nappy as it’s always busting but he’s just woke up now (woke at 1am screaming tried water/shushing/dummy etc) so Ive not changed him and given him milk….so fingers crossed nappy won’t aggravate him?(as it was full)
I’ll try anything so thanks for suggestions x

@ijustlikefood I think I’m going to extend wake window, extend tea time….and then give a supper before milk at bed time.

ChittyBang1987 · 28/09/2022 06:13

He may be grizzly cause he is also overtired. What time is the 30 min nap if he has one?
Can you walk on school rub?

ChittyBang1987 · 28/09/2022 06:15

We had issues with nappies being full. So we use kitkin boosters. There are other makes out there. It helps us as every single morning she would wake up soaked through. Maybe go up a size too ?

Pippylongstock · 28/09/2022 06:18

Oh come on. He is 9 months and waking once a night. Babies wake at night

Preg19 · 28/09/2022 06:19

This is so normal! At 9 months old he’s still so little, he obviously needs the milk as he is draining it. One wake up for his age is really good too! Mine were waking up 2-3 times a night up until 18months, again so normal! Hang in there you’re doing great!

Emmalizzie831 · 28/09/2022 06:28

@ChittyBang1987 So he woke after his 1:00am feed last night at 4am and I HAD to change him as he’d leaked a tad….managed to shush him and he fell asleep 4:30.
he then woke (babbling in cot ) 5:30 so I left him until 6.00.
I read somewhere to greet them in the morning by opening the curtains to suggest morning time so I did that. I’ve just fed him 7 ounces now and he looked like he was about to fall asleep but he’s up playing with his toys.
if he was to nap, following his Q signs, it would be maybe 8 am? It all just depends. Usually I would finish the school run and then he’d sleep after it 9 till 1030. But he’s been fighting it so yes? He may be overtired?
no….walking with the pram isn’t an option unfortunately…about 40 min walk. Wouldn’t work .

Just in the nappies - go up a size for bedtime. Also make sure whatever he's got on isn't tight around his groin. We had to stop baby suits / pj bottoms due to leaking. We use a baby sleep bag and just a long sleeve top.

BradPittsLeftTit · 28/09/2022 06:36

I would try going up a nappy size at bedtime as they do tend to hold more

I'm going to be the first to say it...it looks like all his naps are with milk so fed to sleep?

If that's the case then he may be waking up and not being able to get back to sleep as he's used to having milk for naps? Could you move the milk so it's not so close to his naps?

DoItAfraid · 28/09/2022 06:36

Sorry but I think 1 wake up at 9mo is pretty good going!

ChittyBang1987 · 28/09/2022 06:40

Was lo whinging for you at 6am though?? I'm a mean mum. If my lo wants out of cot she calls for me. Don't get me wrong I'm not talking hours. But if their happy in cot leave them. Obviously set a time on when to get them up and such. But in mornings I leave until 7am if she's happy. My lo needs time to wake up and sometimes will go back to sleep. My lo woke quite often woke at 6am. Then talk for 30 to 40 mins then dropped back off.

Have a look at boosters. Game changer for us. No more leaks in night or changing in night. 2 or 3 boosters. My lo just wees a lot at night. And I didn't want to cut her bedtime bottle down as only one she's had since 12 months unless unwell.

As you have school run I know a lot of people do 9am/915am sleep until 10am and then woken
1pm till 3pm sleep. 7pm bed. Could try this? It never worked for my lo. But works for some. The theory is also shortening the morning nap they also realise they can't catch up on the sleep in the nap.

Also on the nappy's, we didn't change at dream feed as it would disturb her but then nappy would leak. For night time only we used pampers pants and they never leaked

Mindymomo · 28/09/2022 07:03

My DS2 woke every night till 10 months old. He went to bed at 8 pm, he slept for a good 2.5/3 hours every afternoon and had to be woken up as he slept really deeply. When he woke at 2 am I didn’t speak to him, kept lighting to minimum, just changed nappy and fed, then put him back to bed. I did it most of the time because DH couldn’t resist talking and playing. What I did was to go to bed early when DS1 went to bed at 9.30 when DS1 went to bed and had a nap in the afternoon before school run. All of a sudden, when DS2 became more mobile and doing more daytime, he started to sleep through.

I completely agree. Only one wake a night a 9 month is both normal but probably on the easier side of normal.

ladydimitrescu · 28/09/2022 07:11

Dream feed at around 10?

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/09/2022 07:17

I , too, think that only one night feed at ninE months is an issue that doesn't need fixing. My experience of this is that babies stop the night feed in their own time , one of my three had at 7 months, one at 11 months ( still woke four hourly but didn't expect a feed) and one was approaching school age!I'm no martyr but at the same time this is a very short phase in their lives and it changes rapidly.

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/09/2022 07:19

Waking for a feed at 9 months is totally normal and not a cause for concern. A lot of babies still need night feeds at this age. I’d just go with the flow here.

Ikeatears · 28/09/2022 08:26

Is he having 39 oz milk on 24 hours? Or have I read that incorrectly. That seems a lot, especially as he's having food too.
I suspect he is using the milk as a way to soothe himself to sleep. If you're sure he isn't getting too little milk/food (which seems unlikely) perhaps try offering water at night instead?

Caspianberg · 28/09/2022 08:31

1 wake at 9 months is literally the dream.

4.30pm is snack time, way too early for dinner imo. Dinner is around 6pm, move bedtime back a bit

nappies - we used washable, you can add booster overnight if wet a lot. You can buy boosters separately and use in regular nappies. Mine always wet more 6-9months approx.
