Nurofen is more likely to cause stomach problems as it's ibuprofen. Can you give her a ml less every second night and wean her off it? My worry with giving painkillers every single night is that they'll begin to need them (not sure this is true - just my feeling on it!).

Mind you, if she seems in pain, then take her to the doctor - it might be an earache or something. Does she calm down when you put teething gel on her gums? Have you tried something like Anbesol - it's very strong and should numb her gums without the need for calpol or nurofen.

Hiya - It's probably not ideal to be giving it to her every night. Apart from anything else it might stop it being so effective. There are a lot of people on here who have tried homeopathic remedies for teething etc - hopefully one will come along and give you some ideas! Keep your post bumped and someone will pick it up

younger sister swears by teething powders. i found calgel worked well.

agy · 27/11/2004 23:26

I would try to keep away from the nurofen and ibuprofen as much as possible. Ibuprofen can irritate the stomach and even cause stomach bleeding if it is taken for too long. Often babies do cry in the night for no apparent reason - its not always teething. Have you tried having her in bed with you? I know its not always recommended but if it gives you a better night's sleep...

hi there she does not seem to settle when we put anbesol on her she is cutting teeth so thought that is wat is causing her pain she is fine during day but when she cries at night its like she is in pain

I'd take her to the GP and get her ears checked. I used to get lots of ear infections and my ears always hurt more at night. Have you tried giving her a drink of water or a bit of milk?

MarsLady · 27/11/2004 23:51

I found anbesol brilliant. Also use Nelson's teething powders. I wouldn't give calpol every evening. Not good for the insides. Take her to the gp and see what s/he suggests

Can only say keep her bedroom warm tonight, keep her in today or, if you have to go out make sure she has a hat on. Then take her to the surgery first thing in the morning and ask to be seen as an emergency. Hope she's better soon.

Don't be too hard on yourself! All of them go through this kind of thing - and going by your name you don't live in the warmest neck of the woods and that can't help much!! Its not so bad for us southerners!

youngfifemum · 28/11/2004 16:34

it just hard i mean wat doi do as she is in pain so do i leave out the calpol 2nigt or give her some to ease her pain i dont want to give her any in case i do her damage as she has had medicine for over a week now every night but i dont want her to suffer at night

OP posts:
noddy5 · 28/11/2004 16:36

how long have you been giving it to her?

youngfifemum · 28/11/2004 16:38

iv been giving it to her for about 11 days now

hunkermunker · 28/11/2004 16:39

A full dose won't hurt her, not for one more night. Don't let her be in pain. If she settles after you've given it, chances are something was hurting - the GP will hopefully tell you what tomorrow. Calpol has no sedative effect, so it's not like she's only sleeping because you've given it to her - chances are something is bothering her (teeth, eras, who can tell? Don't you wish they could talk?!). Hope it goes well at the GP tomorrow.

hunkermunker · 28/11/2004 16:40

..ears, even...!

youngfifemum · 28/11/2004 16:42

if only she could talk that b great! i will keep u all informed when i get back from doctors

OP posts:
noddy5 · 28/11/2004 16:43

She will never sleep with earache so one more night should be ok and then ask your gp tomorrow

youngfifemum · 28/11/2004 16:47

does anyone know how long u have to give calpol to a child before it does their stomach damage id hate for her stomach to bleed!!!!!!

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 28/11/2004 16:48

Don't think calpol makes the stomach bleed. Ibuprofen in consistently large doses may irritate the stomach lining, but calpol shouldn't. You're only giving her the one dose each night at the mo, right? You can give up to four doses for three days in a row without consulting a doctor, so I'm sure it's fine hun.

youngfifemum · 28/11/2004 17:06

yea i just give her 5ml at night but i gave her 5ml of nurofen for 5 nights in a row do you think that has done damage to her im sorry for being such a worry as you can tell im a 1st time mum

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 28/11/2004 17:07

No hun, I don't. You can give more than that safely - not suggesting you do though. Have you read what it says on the bottle about the dose?

youngfifemum · 28/11/2004 17:11

the nurofen bottle said you can give 5ml doses up to 4 times a day and i gave her a 5ml dose every night for 5 nights
