have given it to ds2 for the last 10ish days (one dose, at bedtime)

he started off snotty so i was using it for its decongestant properties

for the last few nights i have to admit i've continued, not because he's terribly bunged up any more, but because it gives me 3 or 4 hours sleep (he is a dreadful sleeper)

i won't give it tonight, as i have to stop before it becomes an addiction

anyone else prepared to admit using it for a break? how long for?

I have used dd's other med after several weeks of no sleep (dd is 3) but not medised. He's not going to get into a pattern being medicated. How old is he?

FrannyandZooey · 27/12/2007 16:35

yes stop now

I will not go into shameful details but I Understand

Tutter · 27/12/2007 16:35

i understand. but don't give any tonight.

i have actually taken medised (had run out of paracetamol) and the 'hangover' from it is terrible.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/12/2007 16:37

advice here.

JodieG1 · 27/12/2007 16:38

I've used it a couple of times also for the snotty nose when he had the flu but it made no difference to his sleep, he still woke up just as much. There was no incentive to give him it over anything else unless he is bunged up! I know how you feel with the sleeping, ds2 is 11 months and still wakes up every 1-2 hours all evening for milk and then 4-5 times a night.

I haven't had more than 2-3 hours sleep in a row since early pregnancy and can't remember the last full night of sleep I had.

Tutter · 27/12/2007 16:39

oh i know the advice

i wondered iof anyone else had blatantly ignored it / pretended they hadn't read it

I've just had a longish stretch with DD - entirely for snot purposes though. If she can't breathe through her nose, she can't suck her fingers. If she can't do that. she wails. Loudly. Weve gone from one cold to another with barely a break since October here

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/12/2007 16:39

Why would you ignore advice when it comes to your child and medicine? Just curious.

Tutter · 27/12/2007 16:40

oh get off yer bleeding high horse

becaus ei'm exhausted and zombified from sleep deprivation

i already said i'm stopping it tonight

your answer to the op is no. thanks, move along

CorrieDale · 27/12/2007 16:41

I have NOT been giving Medised since October by the way!!!! only on those nights when she really can't breathe through her nose, not even when she's propped up on me.

needmorecoffee · 27/12/2007 16:43

I've used medised this week (half dose cos 5ml's would take all darn night to get into dd aged 3) but it hasn't cleared the congestion. DD is physically unable to mouth breathe except for emergency gasping while turning blue. This cold is driving me nuts and if I meet the woman who bought her green snot child to toddlers I will thank her for 7 days of hell over Xmas and a hospital trip. grrrr.
Daren't sedate her though in case she stops bretahing although maybe she'd mouth breeath then.
I hate colds.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/12/2007 16:43

I am not on my high horse and I am not saying a thing about what you have done. I merely asked why you would ignore advice from professionals.

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 27/12/2007 16:44

No. I have never given my kids a dose of something to knock them out. No sireeeee. Never ever ever. It's a terrible thing to do. Never crossed my mind. You'll never see my kids out for the count because they've been bouncing off walls all day and if they don't sleep I'll hurl myself off something. Nope. Not at all. Never.

FrannyandZooey · 27/12/2007 16:45

Tutter sorry the sleep thing has been bad still

how are you managing day to day, before the cold started?

pukkapatch · 27/12/2007 16:46

dont feel bad about giving it.
sometimes it is a life saver.
but, you yoursefl know you have to give it a rest now. if only becauae you need to let his own immune system do some of the work.

i have a very logical, and religious aunt, a muslim,(ie completley teetotal) who always kept some brandy in her house. she would give it to her lo's when ill. just a teaspoon. helped them and her.
its ok.

FrannyandZooey · 27/12/2007 16:47

Our household is probably on some Medised abuse list

dp dosed himself up last night because he had a bit of a sniffle

he just likes the way it knocks you out, really

[jealous as can't take medised or ruddy anything while pg]

SpookyMadMummy · 27/12/2007 17:44

Have occasionally used it with Dd1 when she is on a sugar high, usually at the hands of her Grandparents who do not understand that some additives send her nuts. If I hadn't, it would be nearing midnight before she climbed down.

throckenholt · 27/12/2007 17:55

mine have had snuffled noses and really bad coughs for over a week now - and I have given them medised most nights because it helps them stop coughing - or at least when they do cough they don't wake up so often. I admit I haven't recently read the bit that says no more than 3 days then see a doctor (I am tempted to say seeing a doctor of Christmas would not have been easy and I would have been told it was a virus anyway).

I am considering braving the doctors reception tomorrow though because this cough just doesn't seem to be going.

I guess for you though - you need to work out why he is such a bad sleeper and find a more permanent solution. My sympathy though - sleep deprivation is mind numbing.

Bluestocking · 27/12/2007 17:56

Hi Pukka, I gave my DS a teaspoonful of brandy once - he was less than a year old and had the sort of cold that meant he coughed every few seconds - I rang NHS Direct and they made an appointment for me with a doctor at an out-of-hours health centre. She was brilliant, an older woman who was not only a GP but also a mother and grandmother - she told me to give him a spoonful of brandy as a natural sedative! It worked wonders although I must say I probably wouldn't do it again.

Heathcliffscathy · 27/12/2007 17:57

franny are you pregnant? THUNK!!!

how the hell do i miss all this...congratulations!@

RBH · 27/12/2007 18:03

My (very good) GP told me it was fine to use Medised for a week or so when DD2 was filled with snot so chances are, even if you saw a doctor, they would probably ok it for another week anyway.

Tutter, sleep deprivation sucks- DD2 didn't sleep through til 8.5 months and 6 months on I am still knackered. Thinking of you with much sympathy/empathy (still haven't regained all my vocabulary yet!). I guess another option is taking it yourself and seeing if you sleep through!

MUMOFDJandP · 27/12/2007 18:08

Hi the pharmacist in boots told me medised is awful if a child is bunged up as it actively stops them from being able to cough it up! so that put a dampner on my parade

FrannyandZooey · 27/12/2007 18:17

Thank you sophable

I may have mentioned it once or twice before

callmeoverchristmas · 27/12/2007 18:18

The length of time you can give it is based on maximum dosage not one small dose at night. If it has helped great - sometimes I give it to DD, even if she is teething rather than normal calpol at night as it helps her calm down enough to sleep. I do know someone who abuses it a bit and I am worried for her DS as he has it everynight, and has done for over 2 years
