have given it to ds2 for the last 10ish days (one dose, at bedtime)

he started off snotty so i was using it for its decongestant properties

for the last few nights i have to admit i've continued, not because he's terribly bunged up any more, but because it gives me 3 or 4 hours sleep (he is a dreadful sleeper)

i won't give it tonight, as i have to stop before it becomes an addiction

anyone else prepared to admit using it for a break? how long for?

We got through loads of the stuff before DS started sleeping through, only when we genuinely thought he might be ill or teething though (in retrospect, we were pretty liberal with it ).

However, although it helped get him off to sleep, I have to say it never stopped him waking in the night. Also throws his naps off the next day.

When my mum was a nanny in the 60s, the family she worked for used to give Phenergan to their babies whenever they were going out for the night. I believe it's not used for young babies now as it has been implicated in a number of cot deaths.

Tutter · 28/12/2007 19:03

thanks for your posts

the number of you posting helps to dilute my guilt

he had no medised last night. we struggled through - maybe 7 wakings (?)

it will get better... it will get better... it will get better

ps yes i agree luckylady, "just curious" has an unpleasant pseudo-sincerity about it

I hope that you have a better night tonight, Tutter

ProjectIcarus · 28/12/2007 19:15

I have been known to give it when one of the dds is snuffly or teething in preference to calpol or nurofen.

Tutter it is hell, utterly hell when your baby does that. Both of mine did it at about that age. Dd1 was teething and cut 7 teeth in 8 weeks. DD2 god knows.

I think that was when I started cosleeping with dd1. I was practically blind with lack of sleep and everything was such an effort.

It might be worth possibly giving him some calpol to see if the pain relief alone makes a difference?

Iota · 28/12/2007 19:18

my now 6 yr old would never take calpol, so I used to give him medised in lieu when he needed pain/fever relief

MaLopez · 28/12/2007 19:20

Hope you have a better night today. Never tried Medised. Why was I not told about this?

fizzbuzz · 28/12/2007 20:07

Don't know if this helps.....

Dd now 18 months was nightmare sleeper from about 10 months to 16 months. Waking every hour, screaming.....horrific. The whole house was beyond desperation

I did Baby whisperer stuff which really really worked, she now sleeps most nights very well. Can really recommend it.

I resorted to Medised in desperation more then once........it just didn't work with her.....but you have all my sympathy.

Sleep training does work. Honest

This household loves Medised for colds ....

lulalullabye · 28/12/2007 20:14

Good luck tonight tutter. I just found with my dd who is 5mths that I resigned myself to the fact that I would be up all night for ? how many nights. I never took her out of the cot. I even sat in her room on mumsnet when she cried cause I was determined to get her to sleep. Over three nights it got slowly better and now she just wakes once a night.

This all happened about two weeks ago. We also have another dd who is 21mths and it didn't wake her up. That was my biggest worry.

So, stick with it, it is an investment in your long term mental health !!

Lapsedrunner · 28/12/2007 20:14

...I found out about Medised on Mumsnet....thankyou ...

mingmummy · 28/12/2007 21:24

I saw the word medised and clicked on the discussion to see if anyone mentioned anything stronger as medised knocks me out but has no effect on dd2 (two years old). off to find phenergan in the morning...

Tutter · 28/12/2007 21:29

lula, did you do cc?

OP posts:
lulalullabye · 29/12/2007 09:05

Tutter, didn't do controlled crying exactly, as haven't read up about it, but just supported her and let her cry but letting her know that I was there. I didn't think the lack of sleeping thing was due to temperment but just because of the medised. I had the mentality that she would eventually sleep and that if I wasn't expecting any sleep I woulden't be bothered if I didn't. And it worked.

I think they are a little young for cc but I think that they do need to be left to know that you are not going to pick them up every 5 mins.

LittleSleighBellasRinging · 29/12/2007 09:09

I am really puzzled by this thread, my kids are 8 and 5 and I have never come across medised, I've only heard aboout it on MN. Is it in chemists? Do doctors prescribe it? Is it paracetemol?

GreenGlassGoblin · 29/12/2007 09:20

If it had any effect on DS's awful sleep I would be hard pressed not to give it every night. As it is he has some pretty much every week for snuffles and everlasting teething. I really would give it all the blardy time if it made him sleep. I would.

For LSBR - it's over the counter paracetemol with antihistamine.

LittleSleighBellasRinging · 29/12/2007 09:30

So what's it actually for? (Isn't anti-histamine for things like pollen allergies etc.? Maybe that's why I've never come across it, my dc's don't have anything like that)

mumof2pixies · 29/12/2007 09:36

I lurrvve medised! It is great for colds, but my HV said feel free to use it for general illness at night, esp teething as it helps knock them out, unlike calpol. If my 3yo has a run of bad nights (with him and night waking it really becomes a habit) I give him a dose at bed time and he sleeps through fine, and it breaks the habit cycle. My 5mo dd hates the stuff unfortunately, and she is a terrible sleeper! Im so sleep deprived I think im gonna end up in the loony bin soon! She just spits it out...but on the odd occasion when i did get it down her when shes had a cold and cough, or after her jabs, its helped alot. She hasnt slept through, but she did do 12am-7am once on it, and 8pm til 3am once....bliss! Thinking of trying this new calpol night time...anyone used it yet? Also...is the nurofen kids range any good? Just thinking ahead as im sure when dd starts to teethe she'll need some relief, and if she wont take medised we'll both be up in the night crying!!

mumof2pixies · 29/12/2007 09:38

Littlesleigh...its just paracetamol with a decongestant in it and antihistamine to help them sleep. Just like calpol, but better!

yes- have used it probably far too much on DS2 who woke on average 8/9 times a night.

2happy · 03/01/2008 14:40

I'd never even bought it before now because I knew if I had it in the house, I wouldn't be able to avoid the temptation some nights and would end up using it more and more easily.

But we're going on hol next week and ds1 does NOT sleep anywhere but his own bed (and even then he's pretty ropey) so bought a bottle in preparation 2 weeks ago.

My fingers have been itching to open it since I got it so many times, thereby confirming my worst fears: if I had had some before, it would have become habitual, and I really ought to bin it when we come back from holiday.

kittylouise · 03/01/2008 14:46

Blimey - I have never heard of this stuff. Sounds pretty potent. I am having trouble sleepingh myself at the mo due to a crappy cough and cold, and Kalms Naturals are a waste of time. Might buy some of this stuff and give it a go.

LyndaG · 03/01/2008 15:21

I asked my GP about today as we have been using a couple of days then a break...my DD has a chest infection he said use it for the course of the antibiotics...which is 7 days...so Tutter 10days isn't alot more!

I got my wrist slapped for using calpol/nuerofen most nights as without it we have screaming fits.......

CountessDracula · 03/01/2008 15:25

tutter I think I have kept on using it longer than is strictly necessary on one or two occasions too
