i've just moved my nearly 2 year old into a bed (he's got a double bed) he doesn't fall out and does sleep through the night once asleep in his bed but recently he's stopped screaming and fighting it he now will get out sit next to his stair gate on his door not crying just silent, with his snuggy and fall asleep next to it?? should i leave him to do this? i put him into his bed when he's asleep. i'm assuming he's not crying so he doesn't mind? is he just protesting because of his bed? Confused

Pick him up and put him in his bed.

PartyPlan · 15/01/2022 22:33

Mine used to do this. I would just leave him to it, he soon realised that his bed was comfier and warmer than the floor.

Butterflyy20 · 15/01/2022 22:34

@RedWingBoots

Pick him up and put him in his bed.
i do when i realise he's asleep. we kept putting him back repeatedly and he would just scream and sit by the door anyway, he's a lot calmer left to sit there, we put him in his bed he gets out himself Grin

@PartyPlan hopefully! i feel mean that he falls asleep on the floor, he stays in the bed when i put him in there for the rest of the night i don't leave him Smile

Mine slept on the floor next to his bed for years. No idea why. He slept on the old cot mattress that we put next to the bed in case he fell out.
I’d just leave a blanket there for him to lie on and pick him up and put him in bed when you go to bed.

IsMaeOnTheAsmae · 15/01/2022 22:36

My son is 5 and I still find him asleep on the floor most nights Grin

titchy · 15/01/2022 22:36

Sounds fine! If it looks long term you could always move his bed so it's next to the door.

Butterflyy20 · 15/01/2022 22:37

@WhatsWrongWithMyUsername good idea i might leave a blanket in the meantime! he's not distressed so i feel it's better than forcing in him his bed repeatedly when he's crying to get out anyway!

Or is he just nervous about being in a (very!) big bed?

titchy · 15/01/2022 22:37

In which case mattress on the floor?

i don't think they'd fall asleep if they aren't comfy Grin he has a massive bed with a comfy duvet etc he just prefers it! he's only been there a week so hopefully it's a a phase

he loves the big bed! he's obsessed with it but only when we are in it, but it's because we always put him in his cot awake and he's fall asleep so now he has the option to get out of it i guess

Each of my three has gone through a phase of wanting to sleep on the floor somewhere in the toddler years. They grew out of it.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 15/01/2022 22:41

DS did this when he went from his cot to bed....lasted about 3 weeks. We'd put him in the bed once he was sleeping. We also let him keep his sleeping bag for a while because it jeant he was still covered on the floor and he didn't like the duvet. Sleep perfectly fine in his bed now.

Thatsplentyjack · 15/01/2022 22:43

Why is he in a double bed? That actually broke my heart reading that. He's sitting next to the gate, falling asleep on the floor by himself. He's just a baby.

girlfrombackthen · 15/01/2022 22:43

When my DS was a bit older than yours he went through a phase of doing ANYTHING to avoid getting into bed - I'd tuck him in then come back 10 mins later to find him fast asleep under the bed/ in the gap between the bed and chest of drawers/behind the door. I just moved him to bed once asleep... this too shall pass!

he's got a big room and i didn't want him rolling out of bed there's no reason for him not to? he hasn't fell out of his bed yet too. it's also low to the floor

🤷‍♀️ I'm not making you feel anything. I just think that's really sad. He's locked behind a gate falling asleep on the floor.

the gates there for his safety and he has books and toys in there it's not prison, he knows we're there and i've tried to lie with him but he's never been that sort of child he's always gone to sleep better on his own every since a baby is lo

What would you suggest then? Keep him in a cot? Let him have free reign of upstairs unsupervised and hope keeps safe and gets enough sleep? OP climbs into bed with him till he's asleep?
Butterflyy20 · 15/01/2022 22:57

@titchy honestly i've tried everything putting him back in constantly for him to scream for hours, i lay with him for hours and woke up the minute i moved, i'd love to lie with him and cuddle for hours but i have another son and a house to keep Sad

Yes, why not? I've had 3. None were locked bind a gate to fall asleep alone. Just feel sorry for him. Not even 2 and locked in a room alone.

Iamkmackered1979 · 15/01/2022 23:00

If he was in a cot or cot bed or single bed he’d likely still get out and do the same, double bed makes no difference. Or does op need to sit there all night till he falls asleep? He’s 2 my 4 knew bed time was bed time and their bed was for sleeping in, if they dozed on the floor they were lifted into bed. They are now 10/11 16 and 20 and sleep all night in their own beds no issues from falling sleep on their bedroom floors. They also were never left to scream or cry

the door is open and he can see me upstairs and hears us, i repeatedly go in and say goodnight and lie him down he has a nightlight Smile
